Incredible. All errors now. Seems like people are just now finding this chart.

gzu··on I Cancelled My Amazon Prime
I have a “prime month” every now and again, just joining then quitting at month end. I subscribe because I want quick shipping on an item then end up ordering a few other things. Full year prime doesn’t make sense unless you’re ordering everything off amazon.

They even recently had a free week trial where I joined then canceled

gzu··on Ask HN: What are some fun projects to try out on a spare Linux file server?
If its built out of a conventional pc, wipe it and install proxmox on an SSD. With that you can virtualize a openmediavault NAS instance then have spare for spare Linux/windows VM instances, Pihole VM, Nextcloud, etc
gzu··on When murderers were hanged quickly (2014)
Someone consciously chose to permanently end another’s life. There has to be decisions made.
gzu··on Boeing Knew the AOA Disagree Alert on the 737 Max Didn’t Work
Yep interesting times. Valuation models at these levels depend on EPS growth where buybacks reduce number of shares = more earnings per share. The side effect is a ballooning balance sheet. Can that go on indefinitely? Are upper management (typically near retirement age) at all concerned with the long term effects?

Passive investment and Fed also plays part. Joe 401k and systemic index tracking leads to no public awareness of companies financial health. Buy no matter what the largest cap stocks in proportion to size. Fed is completely aware of all this. Interest rates must never rise otherwise everything seizes. December’s reaction was just that.

gzu··on Boeing Knew the AOA Disagree Alert on the 737 Max Didn’t Work
Check out their balance sheet. It’s already at zero! They already have been spending so much on buybacks (9B a year, ~eq to net income) that there isn’t any equity left in the company since their liabilities have exploded.

On a side note check a lot of large companies today, corporate debt has gone crazy due to buybacks. They’ve converted any stockholder equity remaining into debt, especially after tax cuts and low interest rates. In a bankruptcy, bond holders get paid first.

gzu··on Crypto Market Roiled by New Allegations Against Tether, Bitfinex
Yes people exchanging their worthless asset (tether) for bitcoin so they can sell it for real USD.

BTC-USDT -> infinity BTC-USD -> much lower

gzu··on Crypto Market Roiled by New Allegations Against Tether, Bitfinex
There is complacency among the exchanges though. You really believe all that volume and price action is legitimate? Exchanges want tether to be worth what they say it’s worth, 1 USD. The alternative is a massive crash in tether and therefore bitcoin price therefore altcoins price therefore profit (trading fees) for exchanges. The scam can go on much longer than you/anyone can imagine.
gzu··on The Samsung Galaxy Fold's display seems to have problems
Ive only seen off brand companies test this out. Samsung seems to be jumping headfirst into the bendable tech skipping dual screen.
gzu··on The Samsung Galaxy Fold's display seems to have problems
Not sure if I’m in the minority but I would prefer two separated clamshell screens to one bendy screen. At least until the bendable tech is 100%.

Two separate screens would still allow great multitasking when necessary. When not used perhaps it can completely fold behind the device for a traditional smartphone experience.

gzu··on Going hungry affects children for their whole lives
Of course not. I’m willing to bet it’s an issue with the parents actions over the course of a decade unless the child has severe mental disabilities. It’s impossible to believe an otherwise healthy 14 year old child would die by refusing to eat food other than carrots and chicken nuggets for weeks on end. Doctors may give answers but it’s up to the parents to follow through.
gzu··on Going hungry affects children for their whole lives
You fed him baby carrots and chicken nuggets for 10 years? Why would you enable that? Make him hungry and he will eat with everyone else.
gzu··on ‘China’s Manhattan’ Borrowed Heavily, but the People Have Yet to Arrive
I’m interested in the China/global economy and this is one of the many data points.
gzu··on ‘China’s Manhattan’ Borrowed Heavily, but the People Have Yet to Arrive
I’ve been browsing around satellite view of Chinese cities for a while now. There are hundreds of thousands of high rise apartment complexes without visible activity around them. Literally copy paste buildings surrounded by empty fields. How does this bode for China’s economy? They are all over the place.
gzu··on Many Americans Feel Cheated by Their Student Loans
Its all just a taxpayer (and employee) subsided way to lower high skill labor costs for companies. "We need more STEM" /s.

What we actually need is a long term solution to middle class destruction. Everyone/everything is sucking them dry. It’s too bad though once they’re empty the whole system is dead.

gzu··on Alphabet Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2018 Results
The TLDR: First time in years EPS dropped Q/Q. Big increases in spending.
gzu··on Why tech’s favorite color is making us all miserable (2018)
I think all cars should have red interior lights as a matter of safety. It makes me angry whenever I rent a car and it has blue lights everywhere inside at night.

It may be a Sonata or something that has a blue light on all the time just above the rear view mirror! I had to cover it with tape.

gzu··on Microsoft’s Resurgence Under Satya Nadella
Exactly! Microsoft is exploiting the “cloud” buzzword when including Office 365. I’m sure old baby boomer investors/advisors/managers couldn’t tell the difference. They want to be in the “growing cloud space”. Office 365 is just a continuation of the monopoly Excel and Word have on the business software market
gzu··on $1.2T in risky corporate debt showing similar warning signs to subprime crisis
The short squeeze in HYG over the past few weeks is insane, up nearly 6%. It had moved +/- 1% all year up until then. You’d have to hold through price moves like that.

gzu··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
I think at the time they had a better sale price. It was a slight discount vs msrp. I also was able to sign up for a store credit card to get 10% back in rewards on the first purchase. Top that off with like 3+ Best Buy locations within a 30min drive of my area.

Ended up being a very good deal. If I bought from Apple would have missed out on free rewards, msrp discount, and the drive to Apple store is a bit longer

gzu··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
You really can't beat going into a physical store for a large ticket item purchase. No waiting for shipping, easy to return, viewing the product in store.

Recently purchased a MBP from Bestbuy. The first one I received had noticeable back light bleeding near a screen corner. Walked back in the store the next day to return. The process from an online retailer would have taken weeks.

gzu··on Ask HN: Low-maintenance alternatives to Gmail?
I’ve recently switched most of my old gmail account to ICloud. Extremely easy to use with the iOS and Mac system. I’m (currently) ok with apple handling my email data, much more so than google. Have had no issues whatsoever.
gzu··on Please stop asking me to use the app
They serve tons of ads no matter the layout by vote manipulation of commercialized content. Literally the 3rd top post is a picture of a Big Mac.
gzu··on Dell XPS 13 Review from a lifelong Mac user
I had a Dell XPS 13 for about 2 months but ended up selling and getting a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 non-touchbar. For the premium you're already spending on an XPS machine, a Mac for slightly more has so much better hardware. The price differential ~300-500$ is more than justified by the FULL metal construction, non-clicky trackpad, and the glorious screen. I immediately regretted my XPS purchase after noticing the screen’s backlight problems and the quality/amount the trackpad depressed while clicking. Though I wish the macbook had more ports and better keyboard, it's not kept me from wanting the XPS back.

It’s crazy to me how one judge gets to decide the fate of a 100 billion dollar merger. Humans are fallible.
