Huh. I wonder if there is some competition going on here

gypsy_boots··on H-1B Willful Violator List of Employers
PG County school district shares a border with Washington, DC, which may be a reason why it got caught and other schools haven't yet. By that I mean, other schools may in fact be in violation, but investigators (who are likely in DC) heard about the practices going on right next door.

But that wouldn't seem to explain the many years of success Roseanne had. Also, as to the comedy, viewed in its time-period, it was a very funny show.
gypsy_boots··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
Which is similarly why a diet high in carbohydrates can lead to your body storing more fat. It's easier for your body to turn the carbohydrates into energy than it is to turn the fat into energy. So when it gets both, it stores the fat for leaner times (less energy abundance) and turns the carbs into glucose for energy. It seems like the more we learn about high fat low carb diets, the more it seems that our body was built to use fat as its main energy source.

Thought of that right after I read the headline. If there was foul play here, I wonder if there was foul play in the Avery case.
gypsy_boots··on SoundCloud launches Go: a subscription service
What will be hard for many consumers and artists is that Soundcloud has so many DJ's and/or podcasters who've been putting out something like a weekly mixtape or podcast for years. Now let's say all of the sudden they now put it behind the paywall. Consumers who have gotten used to getting this free content for years will now be irked. I'm afraid people already equate Soundcloud with great free content, so transitioning to anything else will be difficult.
gypsy_boots··on Obama at SXSW: ‘Absolutist view’ on digital privacy cannot prevail
This would be great. I could see Google and Apple taking a stand, but Amazon hasn't been as outspoken towards government spying as the other's. Quite the opposite: http://www.salon.com/2014/12/01/amazons_frightening_cia_part...
gypsy_boots··on German government to use Trojan spyware to monitor citizens
> The interior ministry spokesman defended the government's decision, saying "basically we now have the skills in an area where we did not have this kind of skill." The program was already endorsed by members of the government in autumn 2015, the ministry said.

By this do they mean they've only now just found and hired someone that can build this program? Is that what they mean by "skill"?

Most non-Reddit users I know say they've tried looking at it, but just could not figure out the layout. Anecdotally, it took me a while to understand the layout/navigation.

Now that's not to say that once people do figure out how to navigate, they're turned off by the culture. However, I do think the UI has something to do with more people not joining.

Ya I immediately thought of the same Life segment. Is there something new in this discovery that I'm not seeing? Maybe the fact that they can also tell how big the prey is and add digestive enzymes accordingly?

gypsy_boots··on Mind-wandering: the rise of a new anti-mindfulness movement
It sounds like your friend is identifying that thought as being inseparable from him/herself. I think one of the strengths of mindfulness is to slowly come to the realization that your thoughts are not you. They are just thoughts. We humans are designed to secrete thoughts thousands of times per day. Some are weird and scary, some are beautiful, but none of them have to identify 'us'.
gypsy_boots··on Mind-wandering: the rise of a new anti-mindfulness movement
I was having trouble articulating my thoughts on this article but I think you nailed it.

I don't think mindfulness and mind-wandering are inconsistent with one another. In fact as you pointed out, a key tenet of mindfulness is occasionally allowing our thoughts to wander, but knowing what is happening, and naming said thoughts.

In fact, mind-wandering paired with mindfulness can be very powerful. We can allow our subconscious to come out of the shadows, all the while noticing where it is going. The two don't have to be separated, they can go hand-in-hand.

Agreed, maybe it would be more clear to take out "just" and emphasize that the brain is a muscle.

> practice of a specific mental skill has little influence on other mental skills

Care to elaborate on this? I'm trying to imagine what you mean here.

gypsy_boots··on Northface teams with Japanese startup to create spider silk moon parka
When much of the dialogue around spider-silk is its strength properties, it seems like a non sequitur when North Faces goes and makes a parka out of the material. There was no talk of its warmth properties.

> The brain is ultimately just a muscle. Make it stronger by working it out

This seems like such an empowering way to look at learning, and one I think many of us are prone to forget. Even masters don't just arrive at their talent, they too have to work at it, over and over, day after day.
