gxt··on An audacious plan to halt the internet's enshittification [video]
That would be perfectly fine, in the end the power to do so would be less concentrated and less centralized as much as it is now.
gxt··on An audacious plan to halt the internet's enshittification [video]
If enterprises had their revenues capped at 100M$/year (and anything above that taxed at 100% to enforce it) there would be so much competition we wouldn't have time to think about this.
gxt··on GNU/Linux Aviation HOWTO (2006)
That is suicidal. Linux is not a real time operating system.
gxt··on Will Cyber Security Be Replaced by AI?
Better operating systems will greatly reduce the need for cyber security, up to 99%, by eradicating attack vectors. AI will play a role on the remaining 1% to help humans.
gxt··on Investors account for 30 per cent of home buying in Canada, data show
Those numbers exclude non permanent residents who also need a place of residence.
gxt··on GNU Radio software-defined radio (SDR) implementation of a LoRa transceiver
Are there legal and plug and play LoRaWAN devices to setup a shell connection? I'm looking for simple alternatives to internet as a last resort server remote access within 10km urban area, eg between offices, to avoid physically moving to an appliance in case something breaks internet connectivity.
gxt··on Serde has started shipping precompiled binaries with no way to opt out
Correction: It's benchmarked, https://github.com/serde-rs/serde/pull/2514.
gxt··on Serde has started shipping precompiled binaries with no way to opt out
I'll be pinning my versions of serde until this gets reverted, fixed, or forked. It's an extremely surprising move to disregard supply chain concerns in favor of non publicly benchmarked performance improvements.
gxt··on Firm regrets taking Facebook moderation work
Don't shield people of the horrors caused by mad men, for they will be their next victims.
gxt··on Replace peer review with “peer replication” (2021)
So why haven't "science modules" been developed yet? I see a library sized piece of equipment to physically perform the lab work that can be configured akin to CNC machining. Papers would then be submitted with the module program and be easily replicated by other labs.
gxt··on Meta blocking news links in Canada
Good. If journalists had been doing their job for the last 15 years they would not need federal intervention to force other businesses to fund them, they would not need subsidies, and we would not have these incompetent politicians and these repeated failures on almost every level of government.

Journalists need to do their job for subscribers and the public:

* Keep an updated profile on every elected official, judge, journalists, high level clerk, private entities and their owners who work for government and who get money from government.

* Keep track of the MONEY by providing analysis and correlations of potential misbehaving officials.

* Who voted for what and how it conflicts with their promises for the term.

* Every statement from elected official and how it conflicts with previous statements, corresponding retractions or post mortems.

* Previous and future employment history of elected officials to root out ethicsless individuals.

* There's a very long list of accountability measures journalists should be providing to make them worth their weight but they do only the above with extreme ideological selectiveness which nullifies it all. It needs to be done in full for them all of them to be objective and to get Canadians to subscribe to them.

gxt··on What do you think of Threads, Meta’s new Twitter Alternative?
The ticks are there to show a high confidence that whatever the content is, has been posted by a real person. I got my tick because I seem to have divergent opinions from a lot of people, and that stupid tick makes them engage with my ideas hopefully for the better instead of rejecting them out of hand by passively disagreeing. It hasn't been all that long and it already changed my mind on something.

That stupid blue tick is important to have people engage in discourse, it's healthy for people to talk instead of vilifing anybody not in your bubble.

To think it represents intellectual elites is a mistake and it's missing the point.

gxt··on The Suicide Attempt by Red Hat
Already switched to suse. Very happy so far.
gxt··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
Usual incompetence from Ottawa again and again. There hasn't been a shortage of applicants since at least 2019. Recently had to fill two roles and out of more than 70 candidates we hired none and transferred two people from other teams. Lots of people pretending to have the required skills who can't answer basic questions and people with unrealistic salary expectations.
gxt··on Show HN: SQLPage – Build Dynamic Websites with Just SQL Queries
Been working on something similar based on DDL but this seems better, I think I'll use this instead!
gxt··on AI does not help programmers
It doesn't produce correct code, we all know that, but ChatGPT4 gave me incorrect answers that showed me where I should look and that unstucked me several times working with LLVM 15. It provided me much more value than the 20$ I paid for.
gxt··on My first superoptimizer
There are surely ways to further constraint the set of programs to test, ie anything that output something not in the expected outcome should probably be an early return. I'd love for more work to be poured into this concept. There might be low hanging fruits and who knows an LLVM pass somewhere not to far in the distant future.
gxt··on Intel to drop the “I” moniker in upcoming CPU rebrand
Not sure I understand all the downvotes and replies.. 5 secs of gpt4 later:

A naming scheme:

Manufacturer Code: A short abbreviation or code for the manufacturer, e.g., 'IN' for Intel, 'AMD' for AMD, 'NV' for NVIDIA, etc.

Component Type: A short abbreviation for the component type, e.g., 'CPU' for Central Processing Unit and 'GPU' for Graphics Processing Unit.

Generation: A two-digit number representing the generation of the component. For instance, '01' for the first generation, '02' for the second generation, and so on.

Performance Tier: A letter representing the performance tier of the component, with 'A' being the highest tier and 'E' being the lowest tier. This can be expanded to include more tiers as needed.

Sub-Tier: A two-digit number representing the sub-tier within the performance tier, with '01' being the highest sub-tier and '99' being the lowest sub-tier.

Examples:

IN-CPU-03-A05: This would represent an Intel third-generation CPU, in the highest performance tier (A), and positioned in the fifth sub-tier within that tier.

NV-GPU-02-C15: This would represent an NVIDIA second-generation GPU, in the middle performance tier (C), and positioned in the fifteenth sub-tier within that tier.

gxt··on Intel to drop the “I” moniker in upcoming CPU rebrand
Let's just adopt an open-sourced hardware naming scheme then.
gxt··on Microsoft Announces Q3 Earnings
Doing any but pure ARM or blueprint/arm on Azure is shooting yourself in the throat.
gxt··on Ask HN: An OS for people who hate changes?
I recently and happily moved to suse.
gxt··on Bilingualism affords no general cognitive advantages: Study
Anybody got a link to the full paper? Being bilingual myself I find the conclusion at odds with my anecdata.

I'm curious to know what were the tests were and corrected factors.

gxt··on Google devising radical search changes to beat back A.I. rivals
Why does google only offer a single search product? Why not specialized indexes and engines? I'd pay to reliably find the excerpt of technical doc I'm looking for, good examples, etc. And not just from the public web, partnerships with technology companies so that their documentation is easily consumable.
gxt··on Building a Database in the 2020s (2022)
Working on it. Just wish LLVM was natively written in rust too, it's easy to segfault when doing something unexpected.
gxt··on GitHub Actions Incident 29.3
At what point are organisations going to ask themselves wether this is intentional or not. Your velocity is disrupted by a likely competitor. I'd move out.
gxt··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
This isn't about an attack scenario from this vector, it's about preventing reconnaissance that might yield helpful results to an adversary that can exploit it via any other vector.
gxt··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
That is information about the topology.
gxt··on I spent a week without IPv4 to understand IPv6 transition mechanisms
How does that protect privacy of the private network? I don't want to divulge any information about internal topology.
gxt··on AI teaches itself to use an API
How is this specific video evidence of those claims? It might just be a loop of print sleep repeat.
gxt··on Leaked audio reveals US rail workers were told to skip inspections
Walking out is not the right thing, and it is not empowerment. It is utter disregard for those who remain, it robs them of your expertise and care. US has OSHA, USCSB, municipal ad., state ad., and federal ad. AND multiple members of Congress per state. Before walking out there all these people AND MORE to contact, make aware, request help from.
