gwenzek··on Unix as IDE (2012)
This is a bad practice. squeue will hit the scheduler directly. If a lot of people do that your scheduler will be busy answering squeue calls, not scheduling. (Saying this just in case we are working on the same cluster ^^)
gwenzek··on Implement with types, not your brain (2019)
Going from the signature to the code took me less time than scrolling through this article.

I'm not sure asking the compiler to babysit you every turn of the road is a good idea.

gwenzek··on Growing Neural Cellular Automata: A Differentiable Model of Morphogenesis
I think I broke the Matrix: https://i.ibb.co/8zGRcNd/Screenshot-20200211-230621-Firefox-...

I erased the lezard but the tail and it grew back very weirdly. How robust is this method?

gwenzek··on Every Google result now looks like an ad
The point of bang is that I don't have to setup anything. And it's pretty exhaustive I often use !gten, !gtfr or !gtes to specify the target language for Google translate. I'm glad I don't have to setup all this by myself, every time I change browser.
gwenzek··on Cutting Google out of your life (2019)
There is also the Framasoft effort: https://framasoft.org/en/#dio
gwenzek··on Keyboard vs. The Mouse, Part 1 (1989)
This. On the condition that the search has good fuzzy matching otherwise it's tedious to remember the name of each operation. I think Sublime Text cmd+p made the mouse vs ctrl-shortcuts moot.
gwenzek··on Big Pile of Vim-Like
It's great to see this list, but it's a bit sad that all those app have to emulate Vim behavior. Do they all handle .vimrc? I think it's ridiculous that some app insists on me using their keybinding instead of mine. I'd love to have an OS level way of exposing commands and settings key bindings across apps.
gwenzek··on YouTube is taking down educational hacking videos
This is wrong. Trending is based on an actual mathematical formula based on the number of views per hour on the last 48h. Then on top of that you have some filtering who tries to downgrade clickbaity contents. In the US you also have human filtering. Curators can remove a video or ask the Trending algorithm to rate a video before it's normally rated but they can't add a video to an arbitrary position or change the ranking.

Clickbait entertainment is probably over represented but that's also a kind of video who receives a lot of view at the same time which what "Trending" means.

Source: used to work next to the Trend team.

gwenzek··on France and Germany Agree to Block Facebook's Libra
> Every loan any bank ever makes is matched with some asset.

This was true 200 years ago not anymore. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_creation#Credit_theory...

Only 3% need to be matched IIRC

gwenzek··on Google is ramping up its efforts to replace SMS with RCS
In France you can have unlimited SMS + 2 hours of call per month for 2€. So it's very close to "free". Texting is free towards all EU, USA and a bunch of other countries around the world.
gwenzek··on The Door Problem of Combat Design
Could you share an URL, I can't find it.
gwenzek··on Google faces first investigation by its European lead authority over GDPR
How much are they keeping for themselves? I'd really like to see this business model arise, but if means giving 30% to Google I'm not so sure.
gwenzek··on Ligatures in Programming Fonts: Hell No
Came here to say this ST handles ligatures very sensibly
gwenzek··on From AI to ML to AI: On Swirling Nomenclature and Slurried Thought (2018)
I feel this switch was largely pushed by Google marketing.

I wonder how much of the name change was to acknowledge the fact that a lot of Google smartness is actually not ML (eg Google search is mostly string matching and giant lookup tables) or at least not Deep Learning.

At the start of my career in ML, I was shivering when someone was labelling my work as AI. At first because I found it too old school, then because I found it over-hyped. But I now use this world myself because that's what people read in the newspaper.

Also, it's often hard to guess that eg the Google assistant is mostly based on regexes and small grammars, while the photo classification is actual ML.

What I'm very cautious though, is to only AI as field name. I don't speak of Google assistant as "an AI" but as an "AI powered" software.

gwenzek··on Google launches AMP for email
> checkin to my flight button

You can do that in HTML email too. Newsletter have an "unsubscribe" button, calendar invites have a yes/no/maybe button.

gwenzek··on Mozilla to Remove Support for Built-In Feed Reader from Firefox
I'd love to be able to have only one tab bar across all my applications. Probably a Tree Style Bar though.
gwenzek··on Using Deep Learning to Help Pathologists Find Tumors
Maybe computation cost? Not sure.
gwenzek··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
1) sounds like you should try Tree Style Tabs addon 5) FF has this too. I'm not exactly sure but I think it's under "history" > "recently closed windows/tabs"
gwenzek··on How a Pentagon Contract Became an Identity Crisis for Google
How is using unmanned drone to automatically kill people around the world different from blind terrorism? It's just a matter of precision.

I agree it's inevitable that someone ill intentioned use ML + drone to create deadly weapons, I don't understand why USA is doing it, nor what are they trying to accomplish like that.

Drone strick is already a main argument in terrorist propaganda, I don't see how increasing the number of attacks and decreasing human intervention is going to help that.

gwenzek··on The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy
Also the article explains that the main wealth of the 9.9% is that they live in the best neighborhood, with the best schools and the best neighbora. They use their zip code to recognize themselves. So it make sens that they place a big chunck of their wealth into their house because your house is your social status.
gwenzek··on YouTube Will ‘Frustrate’ Some Users with Ads So They Pay for Music
FYI YT Red is about to launch in 100 countries in the upcoming months. AFAIK the launched has been delayed a few years because right owners used the occasion to renegociate the contract they had with Google Play Music.
gwenzek··on China to bar people with bad 'social credit' from planes, trains
Interestingly, in 19884 the government do the opposite. The workforce have some leeway (booze and sex) while the middle class (the one that could see through the party lies and revolt) is under permanent surveillance.
gwenzek··on How did Google Talk change from a dream to a nightmare?
Sounds too good to be true! I'll check that.
gwenzek··on How did Google Talk change from a dream to a nightmare?
You mean like what happened to the web ? I'm a bit tired that every time someone suggests a new regulation/standard on HN, someone feel smandated to explain why regulations are bad and why neo liberalism is awesome.

Could we assume that we all understand the downside of regulations ? but that we still suggest some when the market fall into a bad optimum (bad for the consumer). If you don't agree that the market is stuck in a bad place, fine you can argue that.

gwenzek··on Safety Numbers on Autonomous Cars Don't Add Up
I think most big players (like Google) are conscious that 1) there is a lot of money to make 2) a few deaths in a row will scare the public and the regulators

So they are not cutting corners. I'll be more concerned about the companies playing catch up, or the cheap clone that will try to cut on the costly sensor like Lidar and on the long and rigorous process required to develop it correctly. .

gwenzek··on Google Memory Loss
> If DDG was so good, people wouldn't need to use !g for tail queries so much.

When I resort to !g Google usually returns nothing interesting either and the most promising links are usually marked as visited, since I already clicked them from DDG.

gwenzek··on Supreme Court Takes Up Internet Sales Tax Conundrum
I don't understand why the state isn't setting this up themselves. If they want people to pay their tax they should make it easy by creating a Web API that computes the tax rate for (zip code, product category, amount)
gwenzek··on A Commercial Reuse License Can Be the Best of Both Worlds (2016)
You didn't write the "automatic buy-out" clause is that intentional? I find it interesting because it allows big business to use your small project with an upper price tag, versus the current situation where they are afraid of mistakenly infringing IP because that opens to lawsuit with unbounded fines.
gwenzek··on A Commercial Reuse License Can Be the Best of Both Worlds (2016)
I guess the elephant is the room is piracy. How do you enforce people paying you if you let the source available so that other can reuse it?

Should you let your app be closed source and share the code only on formal request? So you have a paper trail?

Otherwise I like the idea.

gwenzek··on Why Google stores billions of lines of code in a single repository (2016)
> This can be impractical if G is a database table that is very large.

Unless if the new format G2 is a super set of the old format G1. Read protobuffers best practice to know more about this.
