guytv··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
Israeli here.

Just a reminder: the ICC was founded in the aftermath of WWII, when Jews had no voice and no one fighting for them.

Israel’s finance minister, one of the most senior ministers in the government:

“No one in the world will allow us to starve two million civilians to death, even though it may be justified and moral, until our hostages are returned.”

Israel’s defense minister:

“I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel. Everything is closed. We are fighting human animals, and we are acting accordingly.”

Someone should prosecute those bastards.

guytv··on Site Is Closed on Sundays
We have similar e-commerce sites in Israel that close on Saturdays for religious reasons.

As someone living in a relegious country with religious parties in parliament, I see this as a slippery slope.

It's a way for religious groups to normalize forcing their lifestyle on the rest of society.

Religious mandates always tend to expand: what starts as "I don't care if you close your site on Sunday" can quickly escalate to "Why are you telling my wife and daughter how they should dress in public?"

Beware

guytv··on Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982
Not only this.

I had a ZX Spectrum, and at some point my dad got me a C128.

I was taken aback by how poor its BASIC was in C64 mode, but on the other hand, adding sprites that moved freely across the screen without being bound to the 32x24 character grid felt like magic to me.

guytv··on Sonic Pi
Did anyone have claude read the syntax, and start generating music from english prompts, yet? Please post results!
guytv··on Asus Bike Booster
what about my mud-guards?
guytv··on The future of version control
I just let claude do all conflict resolution for me. code conflicts are a solved problem.
guytv··on White-collar AI apocalypse narrative is just another bullshit
Correction:

> - before 2012 there was no smartphone

- by 2011, 35% of US adults had smartphones, iPhone released June, 2007

guytv··on We mourn our craft
you’re probably not doing it right.

I’ve been programming since 1984.

OP basically described my current role with scary precision.

I mostly review the AI’s code, fix the plan before it starts, and nudge it in the right direction.

Each new model version needs less nudging — planning, architecture, security, all of it.

There’s an upside.

There’s something addictive about thinking of something and having it materialize within an hour.

I can run faster and farther than I ever could before.

I’ve rediscovered that I just like building things — imagining them and watching them come alive — even if I’m not laying every brick myself anymore.

But the pace is brutal.

My gut tells me this window, where we still get to meaningfully participate in the process, is short.

That part is sad, and I do mourn it quite a bit.

If you think this is just hype, you’re doing it wrong.

guytv··on The chess bot on Delta Air Lines will destroy you (2024) [video]
I wanted to check it out. After login I am immediately redirected to a page asking for $80/year without me even understanding what the service does. Unrealistic expectation. Show me value first, ask for money later
guytv··on I'm just having fun
This hits different when you apply it to chess.

Instead of obsessing with my rating on I just turned on Zen mode in lichees and hid all the numbers.

The game became fun again — Just "oh that was a cool tactic, let me try this weird opening, what happens if I sacrifice my knight for vibes?"

Turns out the rating was a distraction from the actual game.

Same energy as your point about "fucking around" being the point.

The elo was just making me miserable; removing it made me better anyway.

guytv··on Signal knows who you're talking to (2023)

guytv··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
Every cent poured into this boom is building Google’s future competitors.

Of course he’s nervous - what else would you expect him to say?

guytv··on The surprising benefits of giving up
From my own entrepreneurship scars, the real curse is never knowing when “enough is enough.”

If I’d pushed a little harder, would it have finally broken through?

Figma, Airbnb, and the other freak successes only exist because they didn’t quit.

guytv··on Randomness Testing Guide
If you take the UTF-8 binary for “hello world” and paste it there, it passes 4 out of 5 randomness tests.

Strange.

guytv··on Pakistani newspaper mistakenly prints AI prompt with the article
Which raises the question: if everything is generated, why bother reading it at all? Just ask the LLM what you want to know—why treat headlines like bookmarks?
guytv··on The lazy Git UI you didn't know you need
Tried it more than once, still SourceTree is easier to use.
guytv··on Code review can be better
Anyone actually done long-term pair programming and lived to tell the tale? Is it real, or just a utopian fantasy?
guytv··on Code review can be better
With AI based coding (no, i won't use "Vibe coding", thank you) this workflow improves a lot. Instead of jumping straight into code, I have my engineers write a Notion doc that describes what needs to be built. Think of it like an LLD, but really it’s a prompt for Claude-code. This forces them to think through the problem at a low level, and they share the doc with me before sending it to Claude — so I get to review early in the process. Once we finalize this "LLD" or "low-level-prompt", they hand it to Claude. The next time I see the work is in a GitHub PR. At that point, we rarely have to throw everything away and start from scratch.
guytv··on Fish 4.0.0
Can someone from the team share how the dev coordination for the Rust migration was handled? I only see a single PR (#9512)—how was the work organized?
guytv··on Stimulation Clicker

guytv··on A Minecraft server written in COBOL
This is Awesome.

For my high school graduation project, I wrote a full COBOL system to automate soccer betting odds. Long past its prime, but my school hadn’t quite caught up with the times.

It was hilariously out of place, but I loved every line of it. There’s something oddly satisfying about a language that whispers, “Remember punched cards?” as you type.

guytv··on Long Term Software Development
This is why doing long-term development on Android feels like trying to build a sandcastle during high tide.

Google forces you to use their ever-changing, drama-prone OS-level components through their “official” libraries. These libraries evolve faster than a teenager’s TikTok algorithm, so good luck keeping up. Oh, and if you don’t update your app to comply with their shiny new toolchains and runtime? The Play Store will ghost you faster than a bad Tinder match.

guytv··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
The alternative to "ask me clarifying question" is to use Claude's Projects. Upload all your projects' source code there, and ask Claude to do your programming task. OpenAI have recently also added this feature to their offering.
guytv··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Give Claude a try when code generating, it works much better for my use cases.
guytv··on AI Guesses Your Accent

guytv··on TrunkVer
The problem with sequential build/release number is that you have to keep it in git (so you could increment), which results in a number of complications and annoyances.
guytv··on Play Dialog: A contextual turn-taking TTS model like NotebookLM Playground
Oh. the UI lets you select fro various languages, so I assumed they should work. Thanks!
guytv··on Show HN: Scooter – Interactive find and replace in the terminal
Am I the only one who thought this could alsop work lik "just" a find tool, only to discover it silently erased that word from all files in the directory without asking for confirmation? This felt riskier than rm -rf.
