gunnr15··on 2 in 5 Canadians quit their jobs because of bad bosses
“Employees leave managers, not companies”. I think this is well understood, however, why isn’t that logic applied to hiring?

Even for startups, my experience points to early employees joining founders that they like or have worked closely with before. The actual problem they are solving usually is in the top 3, but not the #1 reason.

gunnr15··on Ask HN: What is the best part of being an Engineer at Google?
This is great to hear. Can you be more specific? For example, when/how are you able to bring in other expertise on a project?
gunnr15··on Bullshitters: Who Are They and What Do We Know about Their Lives? [pdf]
Am I reading the data right? It has Canada as the top BS avg? Any ideas as to why this would be?
gunnr15··on How to Keep Your Job as Your Company Grows
More folks should give additional thought to what STAGE of company they want to specialize in. It is totally ok to want to be a great early stage engineer/salesperson/marketer where the ability to make decisions and move forward when the environment is vague/uncertain is HIGHLY valued. In my experience (leading teams at both early stage and 1000+ employee companies) most of the folks that thrive in the early “Wild West” stage start to wither when things get more formulaic as the business matures.

Nice. If you need helping thinking of how to monetize this eventually, feel free to reach out.
gunnr15··on Show HN: Telescope – News and RSS Reader
I would be cautious about adding any features that would lead to trolling, but I think it would be valuable to be able to “follow” my friends and see what article they have read and Think are “valuable”. The only “commenting” I would enable would be private DMs, and Even then I would encourage that to be via email or SMS.
gunnr15··on Show HN: Telescope – News and RSS Reader
I like it. Have you thought about adding any simple Social features yet?
gunnr15··on What Happens When Bitcoin Miners Take Over Your Town
This is happening north of the boarder as well, but not just with Hydro power. Because natural gas prices are so low ATM, you are starting to see long-term Power Purchase agreements for sites in Southern Alberta. I can't see any reasonable argument for putting more carbon in the atmosphere for such a speculative asset/business model.
gunnr15··on What is happening in the Arctic is now beyond words, so here are the pictures
‪What industry is contributing to climate change the most? Where is a good place to find data on this?‬
gunnr15··on Ask HN: If you could pay/article, what sites would make a fortune off of you?
That is a solid point. I am very interested in learning more about the revenue break-down here between ads and subscriptions. If you have access to any resources, pls fwd them on.

From my research, the average internet user generates between 11-31 cents in online ad buys a day. It seems the the numbers here are low enough that a decent % of online users would choose for that $ to go directly to a publisher in exchange for a clean reading experience. At least that is the theory.

gunnr15··on Ask HN: If you could pay/article, what sites would make a fortune off of you?
Actually, I am asking a slightly different question: how can we build an alternate monetization model for online content (outside of ads and subscriptions).

I like your example. I will look up Jeph.

gunnr15··on Ask HN: If you could pay/article, what sites would make a fortune off of you?
So can I assume that you are happy with the current Ad Supported model? Do you see any way to improve it?
gunnr15··on Ask HN: If you could pay/article, what sites would make a fortune off of you?
>I'll literally disregard websites and their content if they try slap me with a paywall.
