gundamdoubleO··on Stop Killing Games fails to secure EU law despite 1.3M signatures
Please actually read the proposed initiative.
gundamdoubleO··on The Onion to Take over InfoWars
It's funny
gundamdoubleO··on A Eulogy for Vim
It does things for them and tells them what to do. Is that really making programming more accessible? I guess in the sense of lowering the barrier to creating stuff. But accessible as in a path to actually start working on things yourself and developing an interest? For most people vibe coding 99% of their lines, I doubt it. And I don't really think that's a problem to be honest, but I don't really buy that it makes programming in and of itself more accessible, more just the result of that programming.
gundamdoubleO··on Separating the Wayland compositor and window manager
We just read titles here
gundamdoubleO··on Niri – A scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor
Love this WM. Been using it as a daily driver for months now and couldn't be happier.
gundamdoubleO··on Dwl: Dwm for Wayland
Used dwm for so long it was basically the only reason I didn't switch to Wayland. Very happy with dwl since I found it, made the switch (almost) painless.
gundamdoubleO··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Learning a couple of programming languages and frameworks you maybe don't like conceptually is more what I would describe as "mildly annoying" rather than tough.
gundamdoubleO··on EU Probes Apple's Decision to Shut Down Epic's Developer Account
schizo mindset
gundamdoubleO··on Citra Nintendo 3DS/DS emulator is gone from GitHub
They were also the team behind Yuzu (Switch emulator) who recently agreed to take that offline.
gundamdoubleO··on Free Godot engine port for Nintendo Switch
I wouldn't recommend using the mig unless you're willing to risk a console ban from all online services (if you care about that).
gundamdoubleO··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
They both had some pretty ground breaking technology to be fair
gundamdoubleO··on LSD: Not Even Once
Not discrediting the author's experiences but those are pretty heavy doses to take for both shrooms and lsd if you're a newbie. Anyone willing to get into psychedelics should take as much caution as possible and begin with smaller safe (and hopefully tested) doses in a safe environment with people you trust to help lessen the possibility of adverse effects. This of course does not mean you are guaranteed to have a good trip without side effects but that's a risk you should always be aware of when taking any drug.
gundamdoubleO··on Tell HN: I stopped caring about personal development in tech after seeing GPT-4
Why? Chess is more popular now than it has ever been and more people care about the human storylines and drama behind the players than the actual quality of their play, for better or for worse.
gundamdoubleO··on GPT-4
I'm sure you can come up with something that doesn't involve murdering innocent people
gundamdoubleO··on How the Chick-fil-A Cauliflower Sandwich was created
Will drink as much milk as I like and keep calling myself vegetarian thanks.
gundamdoubleO··on T-Mobile says investigating data breach involving 37M accounts
> "no sensitive data such as financial information was compromised."

> "some basic customer information was obtained, such as name, billing address, email and phone number"

Yup definitely no sensitive data there

gundamdoubleO··on I'm done with Google
I'm always reminded of Gabe Newell's quote on piracy[1]:

>Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem

And by in large I still agree with it. For me I've only ever turned to piracy when the legitimate service has become a complete mess of red tape and user frustration.

gundamdoubleO··on 2022 was the year of Linux on the Desktop?
Never had any issues with Ubuntu past 16.04, at least not anything requiring bash scripts or issues with restarting. Still wouldn't recommend it to non-technical users though, but that's because 1) They'd have to let me install it for them, and 2) That would probably lead to me being tech support, which I don't have time for.
gundamdoubleO··on Researchers find that a simple “talking to strangers” intervention is effective
It can be difficult for people to take that first step though.

I was extremely anxious about making conversation with strangers for years. Actually forcing myself to just do it and accept the uncomfortable feeling I always felt during and afterwards felt like an insurmountable task. I eventually did get mostly competent at it but that process of convincing myself to start and keep going probably took years.

gundamdoubleO··on Things to argue about over the holidays instead of politics
I prefer not arguing about anything over the holidays but maybe that's just me.
gundamdoubleO··on Dolphin Progress September, October, and November 2022
Really appreciate their support for WiiConnect24, it's a Wii feature I have many fond memories of and the services that use it really deserve preservation.
gundamdoubleO··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
Some of the most non-verbal stuff I've read in a long while.
gundamdoubleO··on GTK File Chooser Dialog gets a thumbnail view after 18 years
End of an era. The lack of thumbnails in the file picker was what started my KDE journey years ago. Doubt I'll ever go back to a GTK desktop but glad to see this finally implemented.
gundamdoubleO··on Ask HN: What are some of the best podcasts for developers?
I recommend Soft Skills Engineering: https://softskills.audio/

The hosts give advice to real problems sent in by listeners involving non-technical issues in the software engineering workplace, such as dealing with problematic co-workers, how best to develop your skills into seniority, how and when to negotiate a pay raise and how to prepare yourself for moving to another job.

I don't think every episode is extremely useful since a lot of the solutions for workplace related problems can be drilled down to "look for a new job and quit your old one", but the hosts are very charismatic and funny. And when they do give good advice it's always something I've kept in mind which has occassionally helped me in my own job.

gundamdoubleO··on Every modeler is supposed to be a great Python programmer
As someone who was naively hired as a "data-scientist" without my employer checking if I actually knew anything about modeling I ended up falling into the "person who fixes up the code, maintains tests it, etc." role, while my seniors, who were much less enthused about software engineering, were the ones pushing out models that were admittedly very impressive but complete disasters in terms of code.

We worked very well off of each other, it was interesting to pick at a model from a software engineering perspective, how the code could be structured and improved, where some tradeoffs would need to be made and how we would test and verify if it actually worked for our users. I eventually left because the company was more concerned with getting new models out as soon as possible regardless of their actual performance, but it did ignite my passion for software engineering and devops.

gundamdoubleO··on Ask HN: Would You Work for Elon?
If I were my younger and more idealistic self then possibly yes, I can see the allure his kind of persona has to some engineers.

As I am right now with more responsibilities on my the shoulders and need for stability in my life absolutely not.

gundamdoubleO··on Firefox Beta for Android now supports custom add-on collections
I've been using uBlock Origin on the Nightly build for a while and it has been an absolute godsend. I only wish it were easier to try out new add-ons without having to mess around with the collections.

gundamdoubleO··on How do you break into a career in machine learning? (2020)
I ended up doing the same thing and moved to backend development at the beginning of the year. ML engineering always seemed very mystical to me but after doing it for almost 2 years I got burnt out very quickly. Partly due to some incorrect expectations I had from the role, and partly due to the work I was given either being not very interesting or very difficult to measure (in my opinion and experience at one company, of course). Backend devlopment felt much more rewarding with more concrete goals and strategies which I heavily preferred (not saying all ML engineering task are shooting in the dark, but this was very much my experience where I worked).
