gundamdoubleO··on Nintendo is removing switch emulation videos on Steam Deck from YouTube
You have to pay extra for the N64 titles. And just a reminder that they've yet to have their retro game collection on the Switch reach half of the games that were available on their Wii Virtual Console service, which ended with approx. 400 games, including some from Sega and SNK consoles.

Most of the titles also ran better and had lower input latency than what's available on the Switch.

The service was completely discontinued in 2019 with no way of transferring the titles over to the Switch or having the proof of purchase even linked to your account. In terms of preserving their old titles Nintendo is awful, they'd rather continually rerelease the popular ones and have you pay yet again for the (temporary) access.

gundamdoubleO··on From macOS to FreeBSD
You're kidding right? Linux gaming compatibility has been near ideal for me for the past year and we already know the anti-cheat situation is at least being worked thanks to vendors like Valve. I haven't boot into Windows for a long time for gaming. The only real exceptions being Microsoft exclusives or multiplayer EGS titles.
gundamdoubleO··on Why static languages suffer from complexity
I advocate for type systems specifically because of how much I've worked with dynamic languages in big corps.
gundamdoubleO··on BBC licence fee to be abolished in 2027 and funding frozen
I remember receiving a fair amount of threatening letters about the TV licence as a student, shortly after I moved out of my parents place to attend university. It was extremely confusing and made me a little anxious.

Not only did I not own a TV or watch TV of any kind, even online, any effort to make this clear fell on deaf ears and the threatening letters continued.

Eventually it became normality and I learned to drone them out of my conscience but it was such a strange concept to me back then. I'm just thankful I never got anyone knocking on my door demanding to check my room.

gundamdoubleO··on Switching from macOS to Pop_OS
Thanks for making this, I installed it the other day after switching to a Mac for work and being really frustrated with the default alt+tab behaviour.
gundamdoubleO··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
I didn't hate my old job or find the pay inadequate, but I had always thought about seeking out something else since I was losing interest and wanted to learn something new. Working from home just made it far easier for me to take the initial steps to start looking. I also had more time to look for openings and my schedule was much more flexible for interviews thanks to WFH.
gundamdoubleO··on Lessons learned from migrating a native iOS app to Flutter
I don't hear much about Kotlin Multiplatform when looking into cross platform mobile apps. Has anyone used it?
gundamdoubleO··on The Strange, Unfinished Saga of Cyberpunk 2077
Bethesda's Elder Scrolls and Fallout series have much less NPCs in their worlds and far fewer densely populated areas compared to a game like Cyberpunk, where there's crowds of people around every corner. If they really did intend for every single NPC actor to be on a TES level schedule I can see where the difficulties come from.
gundamdoubleO··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
Librewolf might be in a similar vein to what you're looking for? https://librewolf-community.gitlab.io/

Been using it on my work machine for a few months and I'm quite happy with it

gundamdoubleO··on For a legally blind player, Far Cry 6’s accessibility options are empowering
It's still insane to me that there are games being released that lack even the most basic of accessibility options like customisable control schemes.

It's noticeably an issue for console games, even those made by big profile developers who don't really have any excuse.

gundamdoubleO··on Tests aren’t enough: Case study after adding type hints to urllib3
I've seen a lot of push back on adding type checking to Python but we had a similar case at my company where we tried it out on a new project and the clarity and readability of the code was immediately beneficial to the entire team. Perhaps it's something well suited to larger codebases.
gundamdoubleO··on Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days?
A slim design, good screen and doesn't sound like a jet engine when under a heavy load are my main factors. Battery isn't as much of a concern to me, 99% of the time I work with my laptop at a desk connected to power and a monitor etc.

Repairability and customisability are also usually on my mind so anything Apple is completely out of the question despite their machines ticking most of my boxes.

Maybe that will change if right to repair laws in the EU improve but that's not a something I'm expecting to happen anytime soon.

gundamdoubleO··on XMonad – The Automated Tiling WM
dwl is a dwm port to Wayland. Haven't used it myself but I do use dwm and find it quite enjoyable, although with a bit of a learning curve if you want to get into configuring it or adding functionality yourself.
gundamdoubleO··on Intermittent fasting in mice improves long-term memory retention
I experimented with fasting almost a year ago now, from OMAD all the way to 6 day fasts. My only motivation was to lose weight and I figured working from home was the best chance I'd have to actually go through with it. I lost around 35kg and I'm finally at a healthy weight for the first time in my life. Of course I'm very happy with the results, but I didn't experience any benefits people mention concerning mental clarity or more energy. To be fair I also didn't feel much worse than usual after a few weeks of starting.

What did give me more mental clarity and energy was eating well and exercising regularly, something that I had to come to terms with when transitioning back to a more traditional diet else I'd just end up putting the weight back on.

gundamdoubleO··on Steam Top 50 Games: Over 70% now work on Linux
I find it pretty hard to believe anyone with the knowledge to build their own rig is not getting Windows through other potentially dubious means.
gundamdoubleO··on Rumbling meteor lights up Norway; part of it may have landed near Oslo
I was wondering what the hell that was last night
