gullevek··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
- IRC - RSS - GIT - other private web page for certain things (weather, some date/time stats for birthdays, etc) - private link/content share
gullevek··on Hacking SimCity 2000 saved games
One of the first save files I modified was SimCity 2000. I had just learned about hex numbers and thought well they have to store my money somewhere so I just searched for the hex values of my current money and voila it was there. Also learned about signed/unsigned int ... as there is a max or you go negative
gullevek··on macOS needs its grid back
You can also assign hot keys to each desktop and then this grid layout is irrelevant anyway
gullevek··on Bttf is a command line datetime Swiss army knife
$> brew install bttf Warning: No available formula with the name "bttf

same with macports

so it is pretty much not existing, cause I am not getting some binaries and drop them into some folder for some command line tool

gullevek··on BBEdit 16
Great and amazing software.

And still no multiple cursor support :|

gullevek··on Git 3.0 will use main as the default branch
Who gives a shit. Seriously. You can set your preferred name in the configs. And I have this since forever because I do not want to have a sudden name change. This will change will not impact anyone. But again we get this "oh this is so horrible". Nobody cares. Nobody forces anyone to change anything
gullevek··on Winamp clone in Swift for macOS
URL dead, 404 ...
gullevek··on Show HN: Base, an SQLite database editor for macOS
I wished it had some more quality of life features like "DB Browser for SQLite" has

- JSON formatted view - tabs for multiple queries - triggers visible - font selection for the list views (SQL query output, data query)

gullevek··on RSS is awesome
Yeah, even as a desktop UI NetNewsWire is great. FreshRSS rocks
gullevek··on Ollama's new app
No, still the same, otoh, it works perfectly fine for Claude, and that is the only one I use. I just wished they would finally add native support for this ...
gullevek··on Ollama's new app
I mean, nice but something like open-webui is just gazillions times better. This is just a GUI to the command line ...
gullevek··on Just use HTML
Doesn't work with any mobile phone. So what is the point in this?
gullevek··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
Keep mine in Aeroplane mode. Download books I buy on Amazon directly from amazon and drop them into calibre. Amazon doesn't get to touch my Kindle ever.

Thinking hard if I ever want to get another Kindle when Amazon can just screw around with what I put on my Kindle ...

gullevek··on Critical 1Password Security Flaw Could Let Hackers Steal Unlock Key
Bitwarden has no SSH IdentityAgent implementation. That is something that 1Password handles perfect.

Also 1Password has multiple vaults, which I really like

gullevek··on Zed on Linux Is Here
Shoves ChatGPD with auto install of Node and what not else right up your throat. On top of that I can't install any extensions ...

Yeah ...

I'll stick with VScode, might be slow but works

gullevek··on Tokyo's Government Is Building Its Own Dating App to Combat Falling Birthrates
Typical JP Gov bollocks. Instead of bloody dating up do actual things to support people with kdis

- support single parents, most kids of single parents are living in POVERTY - support free school lunch, free Kindergarten, etc - make companies pay people a decent amount of money so you don't have to have two people work forever so they can sort of afford one kid where most pay then goes into a Kindergarten so both can work, so they can pay ... - looking at the yen right now and how everything gets overlay expensive and how no company is really willing to raise wages ... yeah good luck with kids - stop building places that are smaller than the places build 30~40 years ago. The new apartment block in front of mine has everything so small, you can barely fit a family with one kid ... - support other contraception methods financial ... - perhaps stop having politicians in say that just constantly complain why women aren't a housewife like in the olden days

A dating up will fix nothing.

gullevek··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Like in the past, when you went over your limit your page went offline. The good old Slashdot effect
gullevek··on The damaging results of mandated return to office
I also have small children and I prefer WFH simply because I can be a proper dad and not "that person that is there on weekends".

I prefer my small kid make a ruckus and than 50 phones ringing and shit talking and crap going on in the super open office place.

Glad my company saw the tide of times and switched to full WFH with office just a meeting space.

gullevek··on Use plain-text email
The plain text email train has left and will never return. Everywhere it is HTML only. People expect that. Paste a Spreadsheet part from Excel, highlight something, bold something, inline images, etc. Quoting on top ... all bad things happen in mail first.
gullevek··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
3D touch failed because it wasn't on all iOS devices.

The end. (I didn't even know about it until I finally switched to an iPhone Xs after years and years of lowest tear iPhones).

gullevek··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
Even with this and even with not updating their client for macOS anymore they are still better than Google Drive and One Drive.

OneDrive for example: you can't delete a file into the trash anymore. It gets just deleted, like a force delete. So if you are offline or OneDrive is not running or the file has not yet been uploaded to OneDrive, that file is GONE. MS response: use the online trash. It worked until they updated to the new 12.3 macOS sync system (icloud can delete to trash, so I fully blame this on MS). Also if one file does not sync for whatever reason ALL syncs are stopped until this conflict is resolved.

GoogleDrive. If in drive stream mode (which i think is the default) it is mounted as a volume, so it is not "there" when you login, so any files opened from there will not open until GoogleDrive is mounted. Also saving to this Volume mounted google drive with some apps will trash the file. MySQL Workbench trashed files very very often. You need to restore from the google drive backup in this case. If you switch to all files always local it is like Dropbox and works, unless you want to upload symlinks or something with characters that don't match googles like and then you have missing files. At least other files will sync. I also have no idea if they actually support macOS 12.3 file sync type fully ...

iCloud: Works ... except that what you see in the finder is not what you actually have in the Terminal because it is a mix of actual files and data folders from applications. Sharing is a pain between users. I also don't think it works well on non Apple systems.

gullevek··on The Xinjiang Police Files
Host already gone. So China did its work.
gullevek··on The Delusions of Debian
PHP 8.0 would only have been able if for example Zabbix would have been dropped as the version that comes with Debian 11 does not work with PHP 8.0 anyway
gullevek··on I’m Disappointed with 1Password
You can still export? Go to the vault list, click on a vault, and there you can export all the data?
gullevek··on Using AI to decipher languages that remain a mystery to us
If the headline can be answered with No. It is No.
gullevek··on Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta
That is all nice. And then python updates from 3.9.n to 3.9.n+1 and nothing works anymore.

brew sucks with python.

gullevek··on Nude pictures on early retro PCs – was it possible?
Grayscale animated gifs where the first introduction to porn. That was i386sx time. Like silent movies they had queue cards with some bollocks like "Shaved pussies are more slippery". 320x250 and 256 colors or 640x400/480 with 16 colors. Bearded blokes and hairy bushes looked really good at 640x400.

Add the corrupted JPEG here and there ... "right above the important area" of course. and you know, porn was also there.

I remember my mom showing me an ASCII print from a drum-roll printer (Mainframe) of a nude lady. So everything was possible ... (o)(o)

gullevek··on Apple broke up with me
That's why every book I bought at Amazon I have physically downloaded. So in case Amazon decides to kill my account I still have the media.
gullevek··on Apple Maps' Acceleration (2020)
Apple Maps really look nice. But depending where you are the information can be shocking barren. Especially in Japan. They look really great but there is no labels, or anything. And if they are not as well double labeled (english and japanese).

They are amazing compared what crap we got back in 2012 or so when apple maps replaced google maps.

gullevek··on Open-source Dropbox client, with multi-account, no-device-limit and M1 support
Dropbox is still the best

OneDrive (I use it at work): if one file fails, all files stop syncing. It sometimes tries to sync some files from teams and just never finishes. It also has very strange file name restrictions. if the file name is bad (eg whitespace at the end) it will just stop syncing anything. Still better than Google Drive as it is a standard folder. if it crashes your data is HERE.

google drive (I used that at work): on MacOS is it is utter crap as it is not a folder but a mounted thing. So it is not "there" when you login. So every application that tries to open a file on google drive just fails. Because it is not an apple FS a lot of apple apps will complain. MySQL Workbench will often fail to save and often destroy files. If not running it is not mounted and none of your files are here. you also can't copy out google files (writer, spreadsheet, etc). For whatever reason.

iCloud: some strange folder nested hundred levels deep. I only use it because of some ios stuff.

So yeah, Dropbox might be pricey but through all the years it really worked very well for me. (And I really don't care about any of the other services they have)
