guinness74··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Are previous applications for other roles considered or should I submit again?

guinness74··on Ask HN: Stripe Atlas after SVB fiasco?
Maybe they have? Or they want to validate if people will pay for things?
guinness74··on Ask HN: Are you as passionate as you used to be?
Yes, but about different things.
guinness74··on Ask HN: What would you do to turn $100K into $1M in 3 years?
Assume the money disappears if it doesn't turn into $1MM.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Why is jQuery hated but frequently used?
jQuery is still shipped with WordPress and Drupal, two of the most popular CMSes out there. So I'm sure that accounts for some of it.
guinness74··on Wordle Now Redirects to NYT
Ads would've resulted in people complaining about user experience. And no one pays a full "lifetime" for anything. For an acquisition like this it's usually a multiple of 5 years of earnings. Probably more because of the popularity.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Has anyone here successfully earning side income from an app?
Do you scrape the job listings or ...?
guinness74··on Readme Driven Development (2010)
Great post, something I'll share with my team. Thanks.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Do you use inheritance when programming?
Yes. The textbook examples really don't do practical applications justice though, e.g.:

  shape

  ...

  circle extends shape
I find it very useful to extend classes in an existing framework or system with a new functionality specific for my particular problem.

For a general example, sub-typing exceptions is useful.

Thanks for the response and best of luck on continued success.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Thanks for the insight. How did you aggregate for Remote OK — manual or did you scrape existing sites?

Beautiful tribute for your wife.
guinness74··on How Birds of Paradise Produce Super-Black Feathers
Went to make this joke and happy someone beat me to it.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Best PHP Framework? Drupal? Laravel? Codeiginiter?
Laravel is a terrific framework, and if you're building the project from scratch it's my suggestion purely from a maintainability standpoint. It's widely adopted and is decoupled nicely.

Drupal is a fine off the shelf CMS that is very extensible. I'd argue it has framework like features, but with the goal to extend CMS capabilities.

I don't know enough about your use case to suggestion one over the other.

guinness74··on The Mac Pro Lives
If Apple seems intent on making things right with its high-end desktop consumers, I wonder what that means for those of us pining for the return of the esc key on the MacBook Pro.
guinness74··on Why we don’t build websites with WordPress
The most important thing written in this post was "A professional picks the right tool for the job." Sometimes WordPress is the right tool for the job, other times it is not.

This applies to software development and engineering too. Pick the right tool (stack) to solve the problem at-hand with an eye towards lifecycle maintenance. As a professional developer for 10+ years, that's one of the most important things I've learned.

Any reason(s) why?
guinness74··on Tripadvisor now lets users rate flights like hotels
But what percentage of passengers would fly Jet Blue over United at a more expensive fare?
guinness74··on Ask HN: Simple web app ideas?
What would be its core features?
guinness74··on Let's Create a Better Product Hunt
I don't know the politics of Silicon Valley well enough to say whether or not PH is rigged, but I agree the challenge is cultivating the community, not developing the software.

I would be interested in developing the app, but it's putting the cart before the horse.

If that works, I'm sold.
guinness74··on Ask HN: Do you think there is a need for a community for career advice?
Interesting thought, but if I wanted career advice I'd ask Hacker News, since I'm a software engineer and the folks here are a great resource. If I was a chef, I would ask for career advice from a similar online community or subreddit. Point being, an online community about a specific interest is where the experts for that topic would reside and those are the people I want to ask.

The value lies in those communties. Creating my own community platform is something I've been noodling for some time. Reddit is terrific, but it's cookie cutter and not exactly feature rich.

guinness74··on Sublime Text 3 Build 3080
Does anyone know if the Sublime Text 2 plugins are compatible with version 3? I've never done a Sublime Text upgrade. TIA!

Edit: seems like they will need to be ported [0].

guinness74··on Ask HN: How to find a non-technical cofounder?
I can vouch for /r/entrepeneur and /r/startups. It's my first time visiting both inbound.org and growthhackers.com, they look like excellent resources too. From a quick poke around they seem to be proprietary CMSes \ community software, anyone know if I'm wrong about that?

Really happy I decided to read this thread before heading to bed tonight! Now to manage the waiting game. Thanks, Joel!
