Japanese here. You got it right. That message is an ultimatum. No mercy for the dishonorable.

Is it just me or does this sound like a standard coding/mentoring practice?

guicho271828··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
What I (non-US) observed:

non-U.S. people when talking about their own medical issues: I have this medical issue, I wonder if I should see a doctor, the cause may be this.

U.S. people when talking about their own medical issues: I had this medical issue, I saw a doctor, and the cause was this.

non-U.S. people when talking about their own divorce: I am thinking about divorcing my wife/husband.

U.S. people when talking about their own divorce: We divorced last week.

guicho271828··on Tactical Combat Umbrella
Im disappointed too. Well, I have a couple of realistic suggestions below as food for thoughts ... (some amateur experience with Kendo in the childhood)

* Add jagged ribs that prevent the attackers from grabbing your unbrella by bare hands. When grabbed, pulling it will cut their palm

* Make the fabric shark skin that similarly damages their palm when rubbed

* Make it actually heavy not light

* Make the grip thicker

* Make the grip longer enough for both hands

* Add a grip guard. This actually cause a stronger piercing force because it pushes against the grip guard rather than relying on the palm friction

This [1] may be indeed practical.

guicho271828··on Toyota’s prototype 'cartridge' is a way to make hydrogen portable
Cartridge distribution network is just like Amazon, right? It already exists.

> Not bad, but not a paradigm shift,

So P100D (100kWh) needs 20 cartridges, or 110kg, instead of nearly 500kg of Li-ion battery. 400kg savings. The comment means you probably know nothing about vehicle dynamics. Or too accustomed to dull handling of heavy pickup trucks.

I actually prefers pens than pencils but with different reasons. With pencils you are tempted to erase things. However, it is an illusion; Eraser does not really erase things, ending up in a dirty paper. It also takes much more time. With pens, erasing is effortless and does not require additional decision to make: Just strikethrough it. Then throw it away when you feel you want to start over.

Note that AMD has an abandoned K12 plan. They still have an ARM license AFAIU. And like what Fujitsu did to their SPARC to produce A64FX, swapping the frontend may make it possible to support an ARM instruction set without much modifications to the backend. So if they will, AMD would make an ARM chip
guicho271828··on Peer-reviewed papers are getting increasingly boring
Actually, there is a good opportunity to be full-on joy mode after acceptance --- Presentation at the conference that follows. You can say as many sketchy things as you want (within caveat) and crave attention. So it is just this basic point --- There is no need to do this in a paper.
guicho271828··on Peer-reviewed papers are getting increasingly boring
Congraturations on paper acceptance, but joy is very optional in research. Joy is emotional and it clobbers logical insight. Peer review is an attempt to guarantee a steady firm progress. It is a matter of taste --- do you want progress or just want to be comfortable? If you want joy, better to be a SF writer... Still, strong results with good execution are allowed to enjoy some freedom.
guicho271828··on Running a Unix-like OS on a home-built CPU with a home-built C compiler
Im from the same uni, but from a different department. The project is famous as well as notorious for the commitment required.

Jp uni students typically write a thesis in the fourth/final year (is it called senior in the US?). This project is for the third year (junior in the US?). Probably there is also a difference between a (e.g. mechanical) engineering and a CS department. A typical CS conference paper does not need 1.5 year from initiation to publication, while I understand a mech work will need a lot more time. I moved from B.Eng to CS. With a proper guidance that lets a student focus on a particular subject (a research theme is given by the advisor), they do incredible work, although they may not have a broader view of the research field yet.

> These students are obviously smarter than the average student,

And yes these national university students are the top brains of the country. BTW, I am very sad that typical Japanese corporate organization basically rejects them as they are too smart and do not fit in their age-based structure. The author is in Microsoft anyways.

guicho271828··on People who can't see things in their mind could have memory trouble too: study
Like a 3D CAD or in Blender. Add or remove details. A circle could be a bouncy wire that has a shiny surface, or made of wood or plastic. They could rotate in the air, or running on a floor making a circle after being dropped. It could bend and get twisted it into a figure 8. I am writing this while imagining it, and I have no real ring-shaped object at hand.

guicho271828··on Cyc
What is your opinion about the popular trend of making everything probabilistic, especially in ML, in favor of default logic? For example, does it make sense to say "mammals lay eggs by 98%" because of the Platypuses exception?
guicho271828··on Cyc
While the last part of your comment is kind of messy, but this part I agree and find it interesting:

> in the ML case those patterns were hammered out one tiny change at a time until they matched reality, whereas in the human there's a moment where they did something very creative and had an idea and went through a kind of phase transition where they started thinking about the game in different terms.

Phase transition, or the "aha" moment, where things start to logically make sense. Humans have that moment. Knowledge gets crystallized in the same sense water starting to form a crystal structure. The regularity in the structure offers the ability to extrapolate, which is what current ML is known to be poor at.

    1.4 The Desktop-Scripting Problem

Related to the shell-language design problem is the desktop-scripting problem:
How should unrelated programs written in different languages be integrated—especially
in an ad-hoc manner in a desktop environment? Such a task can require a large
amount of glue code, written by users who are unfamiliar with the inner workings of
the programs they are using. Notable attempts at solving the desktop-scripting prob-
lem include the TCL language [Ousterhout, 1989] and Guile Scheme [Blandy, 1998].
However, while most of these approaches use a large, robust language, it still remains
difficult to integrate them with external programs—instead putting the burden on
those programs to integrate with their system. We believe a shell-based approach is
    promising
Hmm, Scheme as a large language? Well, I don't know much about the extensions Guile Scheme has over RxRS, would hope for someone to add info here.
