guepe··on Bank failures come in waves
If you buy t-bills yourself fees are low, and brokers aren't banks - so risk of money being stuck there is low.

It's a bit of work but very manageable. 10/10 recommend, you earn more than a savings account.

guepe··on Fireball Spotted over Northeastern USA
I actually saw it! I checked all sunday for reports somewhere.

Where/ how can I add mine? I saw it going down the horizon - it was the most impressive meteorite I ever saw

guepe··on Bug identified after Alaska Airlines planes bump runway while taking off
No that simple ; what is wind speed and direction for instance, which changes acceleration? Air density will also affect, although that's easier to account for.
guepe··on Ask HN: How can Netflix and Amazon Prime be this bad at recommending content?
It's exactly the issue: it recommends based on "same style of what you watched", not on "this is high quality".

I watch high quality shows only - anyway I don't watch much.

And I have the exact same impression, it doesn't suggest me quality shows.

50% means 50% of models predict rain. They run multiple models (- dozen roughly) and.probability of rain is thr mix of all models.
guepe··on Tesla Semi’s Enormous Battery Might Weigh 11,000 Pounds on Its Own
The tesla semi already comes in two battery flavors. It's already quite good flexibility.
guepe··on Musk’s Boring Company Ghosts Cities Across America
Higher throughput with higher latency. I am not strongly opinionated about tbc, but I've seen many comparisons of Las Vegas loop results compared to bus/train. Sure throughput is lower. But latency is too! And users experience latency first.

It's an interesting trade-off. They hit the target throughput. Its done. What's not to love on this project?

guepe··on Binance to acquire FTX
Matt Leving from Money Stuff discussed it today (!). If exchanges provide leverage products to customers, they become banks (providing leverage, through funding typically by other customer's deposit). So bank runs are possible.

Synopsys | Marlboro, MA, USA (some remote ok) | Full-time | Software Engineers The ZeBu emulation team part of Verification Group is hiring a software engineer with a taste for complex challenges: scaling algorithms (we compile largest designs in the world), data-structures, heuristics, multi-threading. A bonus for some digital EE knowledge, but that's not a requirement (at all). Salary is one from a big EDA company, growth of the business unit opens up excellent possibilities for personal career. We are looking for a new graduate, or a professional with up to 4 years of experience. guepe··on 2022 Cloud Report
I stand corrected ! Note that is on cost/performance, not raw performance yet. Impressive.
guepe··on 2022 Cloud Report
There is very little offering and honestly afaik they are not competing on performance except niche applications.

It's not that easy to displace x86...

guepe··on AMD Xilinx Kria KR260 Robotics Kit
While there are clear inefficiencies in FPGA tooling, I can assure you the complexity of the tooling is 2 or 3 orders of magnitude higher than microcontrollers.

Not that I don't wish to have tooling available for me to modify, but I also understand this is thousand years of man work right there...

guepe··on Brickit – scans your Lego bricks and helps you build new creations
My kids are way more creative than I at same age... because they watch speed builds on Youtube compared to me in a Vacuum in the 90's. I absolutely agree that inspiration comes for all sort of things, not only those videos. I applaud this app, I hope it evolves to offer more value to older kids.
guepe··on Brickit – scans your Lego bricks and helps you build new creations
I hope the library evolves, this has potential to give new build ideas in a very simple to use package !
guepe··on Brickit – scans your Lego bricks and helps you build new creations
I think that's what make a model such a nice experience. It's different than building yourself: you end-up with something that looks definitely better than an amateur build. You didn't work on imagination, but end-up with an amazing build. Then you can use those unique pieces to put some highlight into your own build !
guepe··on Brickit – scans your Lego bricks and helps you build new creations
I just tried it on my kids' Legos. I made two scans, one per box: it found ~2500 bricks, which I think is a very high hit rate. However, the build suggestions are very, very lacking. For reference, my kids are 8 and 4. The builds proposed are very simple, small, and still mention missing pieces (probably related to colors, which honestly most kids don't care about). I think my 8yo would like it, she tends to build "worlds", assembling many related contraption that each are fairly simple and match the themes found on suggestions.

As for my 4yo, forget it. He is a builder, making very elaborate and complex constructions, the bigger the better. He would find suggestions absolutely uninteresting. I didn't try to scan Technic legos (which he is fond of and make astonishingly complex contraption given his age). But it's an even more complex problem to solve.

I suspect work on the app was focused on recognition, which honestly is impressive. The second part, finding models, maybe need a bit of work ? I would recommend at least having an option to "ignore color": it's nice to have a build that looks good, but overall most kids - including myself - like to build first.

guepe··on Intel in talks to produce chips for automakers within six to nine months
A fairly large amount of work is required to re-map the design onto Intel standard cells, which are not compatible with others. This means entire backend needs to be re-done. It's very significant amount of work.

guepe··on Apple to build battery-based solar energy storage project in California
There was recently on HN a discussion about a proposed solution for seasonal heat storage based in aluminum - air batteries.

guepe··on Georgian African American newspapers from 1886-1926 now available freely online
I used tesseract for something that sounded extremely simple: OCR a date tag and a few characters identifying a large list of photos. The tag is of very high quality, white over black, a 6yo would read it flawlessly. I had to use the "old" tesseract (the new one uses ML), probably because the ML-based one was "inventing" characters or swapping them, and could not reliably identify numbers. Even with the old solution, I had to resize, apply some filters and was barely reaching 99% recognition. For something extremely clean ! So we have ways to go...
guepe··on Japanese companies fight for share of EUV chip technology sector
True, and I know that a famous verilog simulator was sold to a chinese company as a _single_ license... lol ! But without support, especially as you go down the rabbit hole of prototyping/emulation, they won't compete. They know it and that's why China is building a complete set of verification and design tool of their own. It will take a while to catch up though...
