guax··on Discontinuation of third level domain registrations for the .name TLD [pdf]
The end does not justify the means.
guax··on GPU World
> not much have changed.

So much have changed. The way we shop, travel, navigate a town, the way we socialize, receive information. My formative memory is during the transition from computers are a furniture piece and internet a thing you do to being on your pocket with constant high speed connection and the difference is incredible.

I was also part of the people that thought everyone having access would turn out a lot better than it ended up being. I think the issue is not that it did not change much, is that good changes got offset a bit by a lot of very bad outcomes.

No comment on the distribution and concentration part, that one I agree.

guax··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
> Nitpick but solid wood furniture does not weigh more than the particleboard furniture from Ikea.

What is this special space time dilation wood you found? If its made of hardwood it will be a lot heavier. If it weights similarly and its solid wood is usually very soft and will live as long or less than IKEA furniture.

guax··on A journalist was banned from a Flock Safety convention, so they hacked it
How did he get the registration and room in the first place then?
guax··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I replied specifically to the comment mentioning that arriving with pre-wiped devices could be used against them.

Reading their email it seems like it was indeed under the event block. But the "called on my behalf" is a bit sus anyways.

I am surprised they managed to cancel his personal Hotel reservation.
guax··on Belgian car salesman becomes prince after DNA test proves royal parentage
I got curious about this but it seems that this is also the case for all his siblings. His bio dad gets it (EUR 300k/y) because of a transitional compromise but the future princes aside from the presumptive heir to the throne will not get it.

Not that they might be any close to being destitute given the estate size.

As for him, I suppose you can sue for backpay child support.

Kinesis Advantage360 Pro (ZMK). Not my favourite of all time, but it did help me immensely with wrist pain

Five ifs in a row is already Ai.
guax··on Run 290B+ frontier MoE models locally on your gaming PC
I have read the repo and website. I have no idea what this project does and what exactly its features are.

No
guax··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Whats more crazy is that this is partially false: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/powers-and-operat...

Under normal circumstances, you don't have. BUT there is schedule 7 powers: https://www.counterterrorism.police.uk/what-we-do/counter-te...

> Under Schedule 7, a police officer with the mandated accreditation does not need prior authority or suspicion to stop, question, search, or if necessary, detain someone. However, they may only stop and question a person for the purpose of allowing a determination of whether that person appears to be someone who is or who has been concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

How this is abused on the other hand, I presume, might depend on your skin shade.

guax··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
This is absolutely a possibility and having a clean phone might be grounds for being denied entry.

The border agent has a lot of control over your life at that point and virtually zero accountability.

guax··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
A precedent is set every time an issue is judged for the first time. If you have any prior case of someone being found guilty or not for this exact case, that would be the precedent. If there is none, then this will set it, including appeal results.
guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Free on both, but not with the narration in my native language.

On Brazil the world cup was being transmitted on youtube. in NL only on traditional TV channels or Online for the same channels (all for free but in Dutch).

And literally as I write this I receive an email saying that my youtube premium was raised from 33 to 38 EURO. So there we have piracy getting juicier and juicier.

guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
That's just a fact, not something to argue around. People will judge you for many reasons, some cultural, some political, some ethical, some personal, some valid, some not. Its human nature.

Which is also not illegal and within some bounds and exceptions, a protected right across the globe.

guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Its nuanced and complicated but its not fully without reason. I think there would be a compromise of using those books while playing the "we're helping preserve them part" but I don't think that even crosses the mind of most Ai CEOs in an honest way.

The crux of the issue is that it is mostly a PR problem. AI is amazing but being promoted, in the eyes of many, by the worst people imaginable. Very akin, and overlapping in many ways to the crypto crowd.

guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
They are, they are in no risk of being arrested. But that does not make it free of moral judgement.
guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Or not being able to. Regional licensing, missing and shuffling content.

To watch the world cup I had to spin up a VM in Brazil to watch it with Portuguese narration because the free transmissions are region locked.

I would gladly pay 5 bucks for it if it was possible otherwise and avoid the hassle.

guax··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I think is the scanning for profit and destroying them in the process that angries people.

If they we’re just kept where they were you can always say they’ll eventually be scanned or have that potential.

I do believe the issue is a bit overblown but the core of it sounds reasonable to me.

guax··on Our position on open-weights models
Correct, but people are not wrong in being more concerned about the evil biting than the one keeping it chill.

guax··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Jeez, I had to search because this is baffling to me but alas, there it is:

> Gigabyte's UEFI firmware leverages WPBT to drop an executable—specifically GigabyteUpdateService.exe—into the Windows %SystemRoot%\system32\ directory during the early stages of the boot process. This executable automatically connects to the internet to download and install Gigabyte's auto-update application, often referred to as the "APP Center".

guax··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
I think the fault is entirely on Microsoft for allowing the abuse. I do remember back in the older windows that the driver that auto installs was always the bare basic thing to make the device work. If you wanted the whole support you had to go and download or install from disc.
guax··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
This does not make sense to me. It's likely the exact same scenario where the software is delivered using windows driver infra structure for the chipset.
guax··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
No one uses it? There are dozens of us!
guax··on PlayStation can delete all your digital games after 3 years of inactivity (EU)
That is not how gdpr works. If you have a legitimate reason to hold the data. You can. Ensuring people have access to purchases is a very legitimate reason.
guax··on I Like Small Keyboards
They look fantastic but I am on the opposite end. The kinesys 360 pro I use now made me enjoy keyboards a bit more. I love all the extra buttons and tbh, would like even some more. Feels like a spaceship.
guax··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
I don't know if they're dying. I don't know (or care) enough to figure out. Not having a disc kills it for me for sure.

The ps5 sold very well very fast during the pandemic, which could explain why now that the seas are rough the sales slumped.

If PS and Xbox become abandoned and cause game studios start focusing on PCs again I think it would be a good outcome. But that is just me wishing on a star.
