guard-of-terra··on European Union dedicated questionnaire on the Encryption of Data
You don't need to take on cryptography to fight cybercrime. Cybercrime usually leaves huge trail of evidence. Usually in form of lost money (transactions) and bricked devices.

Fighting cybercrime has different obstacles: it's usually cross-border, and its victims are usually common people. Nobody cares terribly much when a commoner loses $100. Even when there's a thousand of them.

What you need to take on cryptography, is "to snoop". Why would you need that, huh?

guard-of-terra··on Venezuela’s Currency Has Had its Biggest Monthly Collapse
You're country is probably going to rebound in ten years (mostly), but your personal assets aren't going away.
guard-of-terra··on Venezuela’s Currency Has Had its Biggest Monthly Collapse
It actually allows everyone to pay off their debts very quickly. People who bought a large apartment with mortgage in bolivars around 2012 might even get from all this situation with large profit, I presume.
guard-of-terra··on Venezuela’s Currency Has Had its Biggest Monthly Collapse
It will allow country to pay its bills (i.e. wages).

Never mind that by paying their bills with freshly printed money they make all existing money cheaper.

Average Venezuelan can now buy less for their wage, but at least they've got some wage and it is stable or even grows number-wise. That's what makes this trap so dangerous.

guard-of-terra··on The hole at the heart of economics: the consent of the governed
This is main objection to e.g. negative returns on deposits. "it just isn't done". You do that, people will have zero faith in banking system. Tell you, living in society where nobody has faith in institutions is very unfun.
guard-of-terra··on Pilots Strike at Cargo Carrier Serving DHL, Amazon.com
There's perhaps a dozen ways to solve this particular problem and, come to think of that, you didn't apply a single one.
guard-of-terra··on Pilots Strike at Cargo Carrier Serving DHL, Amazon.com
This is not /b/.
guard-of-terra··on Pilots Strike at Cargo Carrier Serving DHL, Amazon.com
"then United would hold out paying until"

We should really be moving away from this bullshit to blockchain-mediated escrow enforced by contract. This way the only case you don't pay upon delivered work is if you're bankrupt.

Which is what should happen here, btw. Don't want to pay? Congratulations, you're technically bankrupt. Get your shares loose.

guard-of-terra··on A Better Alternative to Small Houses
Obviously you were lucky: Soviet standards were pretty diverse (non-russian republics getting the best housing and wares, then Ukrainian and Belorussian SSRs, and finally the worst ones for RSFSR).

Here you have a typical plan of block khruscheba: http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/volgodim/14339505/26623/26623... I've seen quite a few of those. 5.8 m^2 kitchen. All over Russia.

guard-of-terra··on Show HN: Java Bullshifier
I wonder if you could use genetic algorithms on codebases like these to make them do something useful.
guard-of-terra··on A Better Alternative to Small Houses
4sqm kitchen is basically how everybody lives in ex-USSR, and I presume China too, and probably Japan and Korea.

It's quite some space if you know how to use it.

guard-of-terra··on Quit Social Media, Your Career May Depend on It
Who the F do you think you are to order me around?

That's my immediate reaction to the title.

As it happens, deciding for myself is more important to me than my career assessment by other people.

guard-of-terra··on New drug dispenser may turn human beings into weapons against mosquitos
How about placing in our blood flow a CRISPR that embeds into mosquitoes' DNA something that makes all their offspring sterile after four generations? For three generations they should be fertile thus moving genes around.
guard-of-terra··on Facebook fake-news writer: ‘I think Donald Trump won because of me’
> Nobody fact-checks anything anymore — I mean, that’s how Trump got elected

No it's not. You faking news and then making fun of it is how Trump got elected. Everybody is kinda tired with how smart you are, in a dumb way.

Disclaimer: I'm not from the USA.

guard-of-terra··on The World in 2076
That's an awesome video, I think you should post it separately.
guard-of-terra··on The World in 2076
Will there still be competition for progress?
guard-of-terra··on The World in 2076
What's the average citizen will be like? Will we be homogenous on the scale of the world? One contry? One region? Will there be classes? How they will interact? Will they consider themself one society after all? Will there be large groups of outcasts or lowlives?

Will the illusion of "middle class" finally evaporate? Will it then be a standoff between several equally powerful society sides? Or is it winner takes all, not having to consider any losers anymore?

guard-of-terra··on The World in 2076
This one is funny:

> The world in 2076: The anti-science backlash has begun

Science is like fashion. We (as a society) might be pro-science in 2025, anti-science in 2040, pro-science again in 2055 and finally begin to recover from anti-science in 2076. In other words, this one might change very very fast. There might be much more options, like "everybody likes science but it grinds to halt" and "science is loudly disapproved but a lot of fruitful private research goes on"

guard-of-terra··on The World in 2076
Right now I'm more concerned about society changes than technology changes.

Will we make democracy work for the average citizen? Will they have control of their data? Do we get to preserve our culture and the rights deriving from it given the continuing mass migration? Will we figure out basic income? If not, what's the job all those people are going to hold? Will we stop concentrating people in a few attractive megacities surrounded by population desert? Will we stop preying on young like we do today? Perhaps when there'll be no young to speak of? What'll happen to religions? To parenting?

guard-of-terra··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
Women were comparably more fond of ICQ and even now it's them who still hold on to it. It's very unlike the IRC sausage party. I think you would more likely to run into a girl pretending to be male.

Also, I have this feeling that it's much harder to disguise your gender in Russian than it is in English. First of all, everybody has it as first language with all its nuance and can guess a lot of things about their penpal. Discussions are also deeper, making it harder to fake.

guard-of-terra··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
ICQ happened to figure something out - girls wrote boys as well, I remember getting messages from strangers as often as initiating those.

Anyway, it was more about talking than about romantic relationship. Not many people expected to ever meet their virtual friends.

You can definitely ruin that, for example, if you do not randomize well enough and a small subset of user base gets too much attention.

guard-of-terra··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
I do. Have one friend that's still on ICQ. Everybody else mostly migrated to VK.
guard-of-terra··on Wazer introduces the first desktop water-jet cutter

Looks amazing.

guard-of-terra··on The Trabant Is the Best Commie Car Made of Cotton We've Ever Driven
I guess there were no longer any USSR to supply them with fertilizer and other stuff for free, and China retracted some of their support too. And they relied on centralized mechanized agriculture. Which in this closed off society led to a large scale famine.
guard-of-terra··on The Trabant Is the Best Commie Car Made of Cotton We've Ever Driven
The problem with those socialist countries is that they failed to evolve. They'll still be making the same car in '85 which was succesfully launched in '65, and nobody would want it any more.

This is perhaps because of lack of competition (there wasn't much common market even between different Warsaw Pact countries) and overspending on military preparing for wars which never came.

http://jalopnik.com/these-were-your-car-options-in-hungary-u... this article makes the point that there was some competition. Lucky for Hungary. In USSR there were not.

guard-of-terra··on Silicon Valley frets over foreign worker crackdown
It's generally true but there are counterexamples. For starters, in most of the world, 15 years ago computer programming was something geeks did while the rest of people were building real careers involving oversight of buying and selling stuff.

Fast forward today, programmers rake serious money getting better than average salaries, in some places several times more than peer salaries. But supply also increased several times. It's just that demand increased faster. I think that if supply would fail to increase we'll see smaller wages today as the market will fail to evolve.

There's also probably a lot of big inductry people who love existing regulation mazes, since it blocks any newcomers from their cornered markets.
guard-of-terra··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
It's a question to you whether you get to shate the culture of the space race. You rejected it in your parent comment.

Suffrage is not everything. The right of doing your finances is another one. The right to abortion is yet other. Entering higher education a different one.

You make it sound like culture is a rigid thing like a barcode, it's either same on two individuals or different, end of story. It is not so. You share more with your peers, a bit less with other compatriots, a bit less with people from neighboring countries, a bit less, but still significant amount, with all white Europeans, and then you share some with the rest of the world.

But on the 'white European' level quite some interesting things do happen.

guard-of-terra··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
It's sad that 'space race' is not part of your culture. You've missed out on one of Top 5 Things To Do In XX Century.

WRT women had to fight every step: In Soviet Russia, which by the way I don't really like, women got quite a few rights over a range of time without big struggle, and that in part encouraged other white women in the world, and then all other women too, to go for what's theirs.

The white European male culture is what made fight for human rights possible. It's where it all happened, just like Jesus happened in Jerusalem and not in Ohio.

guard-of-terra··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Nope I am not. You could vote against Brexit - an equal proposition. You did not have equal propositions against Putin, it was him against spoiler candidates, him versus straw men.

Fuck approval ratings.
