guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
Admission to a country was never a professor's decision.

I can't go to a country abroad and study because a professor has decided that I would be a good fit. At most, we can submit an application. Then, the decision is up to immigration officials.

guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
Who decides for me what's a threat and what is not?

Isn't there the same sort of people who during Communism decided whether I need any sausage or can go without?

guard-of-terra··on United Airlines Domestic Flights Grounded for 2 Hours by Computer Outage
You said there was always a line of planes. All those planes were delayed, weren't they?

This is even before we factor in all the time lost by passengers of these planes, after which it would be a no-brainer.

guard-of-terra··on United Airlines Domestic Flights Grounded for 2 Hours by Computer Outage
The solution here to have more crews & gates. Will create some jobs along the way, and surely will cost less than the delays you described.
guard-of-terra··on The internet does to the world what radio did to the world
But why are you assuming that "capitalizing on the situation" is a bad thing? Why are you even assuming that "the situation" is a bad thing?

What is "internet fallout"? What fell out where?

You could as well praise the very thing you blame.

guard-of-terra··on The analysis of 28,000 results suggests that hardly anybody gets indexes right
SQL indexes are hard to get right and performance is often poor even when you did.

On the other hand, for fulltext systems like Solr, indexes are trivial to set up and performance is usually impressive, even if you never use any fulltext features!

For many many uses, SQL is a poor fit, you're much better to stick to NoSQL or full text searches.

Also: Everything you knew about database normalization is SLOW.

guard-of-terra··on How Space Weather Could Trigger a Future Economic Crisis
Spending capital creates wealth. Hoarding capital does not.
guard-of-terra··on How Space Weather Could Trigger a Future Economic Crisis
It won't trigger an economic crisis. What it would trigger is an economic boom. Capital owners will all have to pony up to repair the infrastructure they own or depend on. You might get some of your possessions damaged, but after that making quick buck will become easier for a duration.
guard-of-terra··on Why I don't believe in Uber's Success
That's what Yandex.Taxi (and also Gett) are doing in Russia, contracting cab dispatchers. This way, they hail you a real cab (that, for example, can drive in bus lanes) with your app.

I think they're also trying direct Uber-like scheme but I'm not sure about that.

guard-of-terra··on An Inferno on the Head of a Pin
I know that several years back, they ran all their Stack Overflow from one multi-core Windows server (DB and backend and frontend). And they mocked the traditional Linux setup of multiple frontends talking to multiple DB instances with huge number of small VMs.

Makes sense the server should be really massive.

guard-of-terra··on What Romance Really Means After 10 Years of Marriage
> Holy Christ, I really am going to melt right into this other person (who is a relative stranger)! It really IS physically intoxicating and perfect! And it seems like we feel the exact same way about each other!

That's not romance. That's illusions. She's welcoming trouble with that attitude.

UPD: Apparently not anymore if she left that minefield and lives in healthy marriage.

guard-of-terra··on Cartography Comparison: Google Maps and Apple Maps
> And both are in a race to become the world’s first Universal Map — that is, the first map used by a majority of the global population

Actually, lol, no. OpenStreetMap is. Google Maps will be a contender for some time, but eventually it'll settle.

guard-of-terra··on Rhythm: Story of a Soviet startup (2015)
Well wasn't there? Russia has multiple social networks, webmail providers, multiple search engines, multiple mapping services complete with traffic and navigation, multiple UBER-style mobile taxi services, etc, etc...

Most of those alive and kicking today, holding against megacorps' offerings.

You can say most of those are copycats of preexisting ideas, but face it, people have copycat needs that still need to be fulfilled. People don't fall for uniqueness alone.

What's technological innovation? Is maps.me one? Because it's a game changer isn't it?

guard-of-terra··on Why Many Cities Have No Money
Most of Russian cities are built on a plain (or even better - major river) and they don't have any problems with venting out polluted air. Regular pre-Brezhnev street gaps are more than enough for that.

However, most of Russian cities have half of year of virtually winter, with temperature near or below zero celsius.

This pretty much makes such apartment blocks torturous/unlivable due to chilling winds if you don't have a car. And if you do, keep in mind that they're not built for that, so lack of parking and congestion are your new friends.

guard-of-terra··on Why Many Cities Have No Money
Soviet union planned cities are mostly awful. They mandate helluva lot of open space between high-rises which doesn't get any care. It also creates corridors for fierce cold winds to blow. Most of buildings don't have space for commerce making area either as dead as suburbia or blistered with shackles selling stuff. Transit stops are far between and you have to get there thru ice and hail. Roads are few and congested while still getting in your way.

http://pora-valit.livejournal.com/4740340.html it mostly looks like this

It was fine up until the 50-s and then worse and worse with each year (even now)

guard-of-terra··on Rhythm: Story of a Soviet startup (2015)
Start-ups are no longer about innovation but rather about eyeballs, aren't they? Russia is in economic recession so Russian eyeballs nonlonger worth very much. So many new developments target wider world audience, and they don't even have to be startups. Make a good mobile game, for example. But often, just outsourcing is simpler.

Atmosphere is bad mainly for internal projects which we don't see much of, anymore.

guard-of-terra··on Rhythm: Story of a Soviet startup (2015)
Unfortunately, most people on the whole territory are still not free from Soviet spell.

Even those who claim to be anti-Soviet express all the same thinking patterns.

WRT the article: The real start-upers bartered western PCs (faxes, etc) for raw materials, quickly got a good capital and were able to start serious enterprises. You could get a train car of aluminium for a fax machine, since having one was A Thing for late soviet bureaucrats and they had aluminium to spare.

I think Volozh did something like that before he decided to start Yandex.

What's funniest, USA created War on Drugs to tackle their internal purposes, but the rest of the world adopted it anyway (including the wrong side of Iron Curtain)

Should not have thanked them. The article quickly went flagged.
guard-of-terra··on How to Partition a Billion-Node Graph [pdf]
Can't download it.

What's the problem? Machines with 32G RAM are commonplace, you can probably just fit it all into memory. The important bits at least.

guard-of-terra··on 2016’s Business Winners and Losers
Google is winner? What do they do now? I don't remember being excited about their product for a long time. 2008 if you exclude Android. Seriously. Gmail inbox partitioning was a good thing.
guard-of-terra··on First China-U.K. Freight Train Departs as Xi Seeks to Lift Trade
Most of Russian generation is natural gas, with notable hydro and nuclear.

Anyway, this is fixable. Planes and ships are not.

guard-of-terra··on First China-U.K. Freight Train Departs as Xi Seeks to Lift Trade
Most of the length is electrified already. Yekaterinburg-Madrid definitely, Kazakhstan-Yekaterinburg likely, China-Kazakhstan connection and Chinese side probably remains an issue.
guard-of-terra··on First China-U.K. Freight Train Departs as Xi Seeks to Lift Trade
You can probably book Paris-Moscow and Moscow-Beijing from Russian Railways website. You'll need some visas to be done in advance. Better make a few stops along the way.
guard-of-terra··on Bloggers Leave LiveJournal as Servers Move to Russia
A person who is working about country's interests is not called dissident, and you definitely should not have been throwing such claims around.
guard-of-terra··on Global living conditions are getting better
Even if I choose to not consume anything, I still have to foot the bills for medicine, apartment and transportation.

And those are unpayable for many people without working overtime, even if they don't consume anything extra.

guard-of-terra··on Cheetahs heading towards extinction as population crashes
But what can we do about growth models in Africa? That's where most of wildlife seems to be.

As far as I understand, European wildlife is quite boring ever since the glaciers, and then we humans killed most of remaining megafauna. I would definitely like to see some of those restored.

guard-of-terra··on GNU Parallel
I'm sorry if you got the idea that EXAMPLE section is lacking in parallel manpage.

I wasn't checking that, I was ranting on the general state of man pages. I checked ls, curl, wget, mv - none of which had EXAMPLE sections, and that's where I wrote the comment. Didn't even have parallel on my system.

guard-of-terra··on GNU Parallel
There was a time when many man pages had healthy EXAMPLES section. It seems less frequent now. And info pages are a disaster.

we have bropages for that alas they don't see much activity.
