guard-of-terra··on Why Feynman Diagrams Are So Important
They have a diagram that emits a single gluon in the head of every particle physics article in Wikipedia. Is that a make-believe diagram? I couldn't expect that from them.
guard-of-terra··on Why Feynman Diagrams Are So Important
I'm kind of confused by Feynmann diagrams where a stray gluon flies off. What happens to it then? Where does it go?
guard-of-terra··on Do Portia Spiders Have a Mind? (2006)
I don't see how it affects my line of reasoning.

All spiders can see eggs in the fangs of their opponents. What differs is whether they react to it.

> And then there is the realisation that this is a population-specific, not species-specific, trait! It is a bit of locally acquired genetic knowledge.

Some human populations "know" how to digest milk, and some don't. Non species-specific. It's a bit of locally acquired "genetic knowledge" as well.

What's surprising here?

guard-of-terra··on Unpleasant Design
It seems that you've got yourself a case of "social debt", not unlike the "technical debt" in software projects.

Spoiler: No, it's not solved by sweep-overs.

> Installing a "Mosquito" high-pitch noise generator means that the teenagers will be put off congregating here

So here you're installing a mosquito device outside of your venue? A device that produces constant noize pollution in a common street? I can surely see how somebody should complain to police, and they surely should confiscate that device and write you a fine. It's strange if that would not happen.

Also:

> ...a group of teenagers have taken to hanging out outside your store...

There's some kind of weird narrative here, because I've never heard things like this happening where I live. Not once.

> The teenagers end up playing football or skating or something, not intimidating people

Why won't they do that in a first place? If they also enjoy destroying bins and drawing gravity they can surely do that in ten minutes or so, doing all the damage and avoiding too much nuisance from your device? I can't imagine teenagers hanging in one place all the time, won't that be extremelly boring?

guard-of-terra··on China’s tyranny of characters
I believe it's no longer so these days when >3/4 of people live in cities. Cities tend to normalize and homogenize languages. So you will ask: "Is the language spoken in city X is a dialect of a language in a city Y? Is it mutually intelligible?"

The answer is often "no" or "not really".

It's no longer a continuum rather a graph.

Limitations section in Wikipedia sounds pretty scary.

The pipes with coolant will rupture, and from there Polonium-210 will be released into environment.

guard-of-terra··on Unpleasant Design
Maybe; but they will also have no reservations against cutting access for older generation because they were taught it's okay to do.

So such people better prepare to an extremely unpleasant late life.

guard-of-terra··on China’s tyranny of characters
"A language is a dialect with an army and a navy"

To me, any non-mutually-intelligible dialect is in position to be called a language.

guard-of-terra··on Unpleasant Design
To me, "buzzers for teenagers" is an extremelly unsettling slash dehumanizing idea. I thought it's a proof of concept, I can't imagine how anybody will actually install one of these.

It's totally like installing a bump in your door frame so any people with disability will have difficulty passing. We're not wanting any limp lamers to destroy our healthy mood inside, do we?

One day people who embraced this kind of thing will be old and helpless, and "teenagers" will held all posts. Just sayin'.

guard-of-terra··on A Remote Pacific Nation, Threatened by Rising Seas
It does cost you to have letters in the alphabet that you don't use (as in, you have minimal pairs with that letter). You don't understand how to pronounce it and it becomes confusing. For example, Italian doesn't use k, j, y, x, w except in loanwords.

And 'z' sound in Italian means two different consonants; in English it also means two different consonants, both also different from both Italian ones. Both are "phonetic".

guard-of-terra··on A Remote Pacific Nation, Threatened by Rising Seas
Not necessarily. Maybe this is less than optimal for loanwords, but why have consonants in your alphabet that you never use? Might also have grammatical meaning (e.g. t staying t in every form of a word)

For example, in Russian pronunciation, you might definitely confuse 'ti' for 'si'. If Russian wouldn't have the real 's' consonant (or 'ц'), it would make sense to transliterate 's' as 'ti'.

guard-of-terra··on FAQ from Guccifer 2.0
Why do you expect anything else from him than just stating his own opinion?

Mine is roughly the same btw, for as much as I care.

guard-of-terra··on FAQ from Guccifer 2.0
What's he notable for?

This guy's writing reminds me of Bill Cipher uncomfortably.

guard-of-terra··on The Moral Economy of Tech
"if controlling/subjugating women was the actual goal"

Then to begin with they had no soul.

guard-of-terra··on The Moral Economy of Tech
My point is that they pay with their soul (or you can call it "integrity"), up front, and then maybe achieve a questionable goal.
guard-of-terra··on The Moral Economy of Tech
Hidden in the article is an example how moralizing destroys soul:

> Abortion has been illegal in Poland for some time, but the governing party wants to tighten restrictions on abortion by investigating every miscarriage as a potential crime.

One day, you are "pro life", and the next day, you are happy to harrass people in terrible life situation.

guard-of-terra··on Facebook uses location to suggest new friends
Just yesterday somebody warned that Facebook does location-based friends suggestion (was suggested to friend a taxi driver) and promptly accused to be tin foil hatter.

That's just how it goes every time.

guard-of-terra··on New Cities
When you have a city as dense as Paris, you can access the whole city in 30 minutes using transportation. That's more people, offices, cafes, museums and parks that sprawling city will fit into two hours car commute radius.
guard-of-terra··on IT runs on the cloud, and the cloud runs on Linux
Solaris is typical "too little, too late" IMO.
guard-of-terra··on Reasons not to use (i.e., be used by) Facebook
If it's indeed so - where I live is this stupid law that makes eavesdropping devices illegal.

Maybe they should sue Samsung & FB tandem for listening to conversations, write them a fine the size of small country budget. Make it useful even if just once.

guard-of-terra··on Reasons not to use (i.e., be used by) Facebook
Sometimes off-putting is what your need.

They don't put unicorns kindly asking you to quit on cigarette packs. There they put lung cancer pics.

Stallman's points are digital equivalent of cancer pics. "Quit or you'll see more, every day".

And no, I'm not 100% sure that works. Regulations surely do, tho.

guard-of-terra··on Reasons not to use (i.e., be used by) Facebook
So you're understanding the grave seriousness of the considerations, but still waiting for somebody different to convey that to you?
guard-of-terra··on Thoughts on the sociology of Brexit
Yes, it's pretty easy to bully white people. Of course, you'll be bullying 99%, not the 1%.

To do that, you just have to bill white 99%-ers for privileges that 1%-ers gave themself. Tell white 99%-ers that it's somehow solely them who are responsible both for their own sad fate, for taking 1%-ers to power, and also for every racial and classist abuse there is.

guard-of-terra··on The problem with reinforced concrete
In NYC at least most apartments aren't owned by tenants (are they?). So it'll be landlords' problems.

It depends on how you spin it. People happily pay premium for smart offerings. They just have to see the reputation working.

You're paying more for the project but spend less on construction. And construction is the expensive part, is it not?
