gtk40··on Got called to a professor’s office after a complaint his SPARC4 was running slow
Works great in old conference rooms... I have a USB-C VGA adapter in my bag still.
gtk40··on Threads, a Slack alternative unrelated to Instagram, has seen downloads surge
I can't tell if you're talking about OP's link or to the unrelated but same named product.
gtk40··on Plastics are poisoning us
My plumber prefers copper pipes. He's replaced a couple of leaks (in PVC pipes) with copper at core junctions in my house. I never knew it was dangerous.
gtk40··on Ask HN: Is everyone becoming a Product Manager these days?
While as a product owner I'm not primarily a people leader (although I do) I got a significant pay bump switching from a lead engineer to a product owner at my company.
gtk40··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
I was playing around with Windows 95 in a VM a few years ago (I think 2020 when we all felt we had too much time on our hands). I was curious how modern of a web browser I could get and I found RetroZilla: https://rn10950.github.io/RetroZillaWeb/

It essentially backported some newer Gecko features and SSL certs to older version of Windows. I was able to use many common websites perfectly fine on this browser.

RetroZilla hasn't received an update since 2019 so it may not work as well now three years later. It looks like there may be a current build of K-Meleon for Windows 95 though so I may give that a whirl sometime.

gtk40··on Vim Keybindings Everywhere – The Ultimate List
I use these all the time. Looks like the article has some hacks to use vim style on macOS but I'm happy using Emacs-ish keybindings by default in Bash and macOS.
gtk40··on US adds a solid 253,000 jobs despite Fed's rate hikes
> FIRE

Or just expand to any retirees not just those who do it early.

gtk40··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
Eligibility for credit unions tend to be regional, but you're right you can almost always keep your old account once you have it.
gtk40··on Inkscape is hiring: Accelerating the GTK4 migration
Over a decade ago (I think around ~2010) when I was in high school I had an English teacher who required Times New Roman for a paper. I got marked off because while I had installed Times New Roman, I had a word processor which had silently replaced another serif font as Times New Roman when I selected it. To be fair I think it was one of the Bitstream fonts that looked a bit larger than Times New Roman at the same size.
gtk40··on BuzzFeed News Is Shutting Down, Company Laying Off 180 Staffers
Wikipedia considers Fox News thusly: "There is consensus that Fox News is generally reliable for news coverage on topics other than politics and science."

gtk40··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
I definitely agree with un-bundling for the best services over all. The problem with credit unions are most are regional (though some are not). I have the best CU in my area which is fine, but it doesn't have a competitive credit card offering or savings rate. It does have good service and some good other benefits and I use it for my main checking account.

I don't agree CUs are more competitive always than big banks. I think for the most part big banks have better credit card offerings for example. There are lots of reasons someone would go for a big bank like Chase for credit cards.

gtk40··on There's something off about LED bulbs
We have a pet tortoise that we use incandescent flood bulbs to heat and provide light. The only consistent place we can find them is at a small mom and pop hardware store (similar to the reference in the article). I just checked our supply and they have a weird import sticker and have text in multiple languages.
gtk40··on Remote work is starting to hit office rents
I'm guessing you were at Kubecon as well. It was my first time in Detroit and overall thought the city was much nicer than expected. But to be fair, I mostly was just downtown during the day and we ended up staying in a suburb (Royal Oak) because all of the hotels within walking distance were booked by the time I registered for the conference. The drive between Royal Oak (adjacent to the city limits) and downtown Detroit had some areas that looked dilapidated or worse.
gtk40··on More Americans say they can't pay their bills. Here are the states where worst
It's not just a red states versus blue states issue. New Mexico is squarely in the bottom and solid democratic at this point for example.
gtk40··on Laptop Brands with GNU/Linux Preinstalled
Maybe not "GNU" enough for them but I'm writing this on a Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 I bought pre-installed with Fedora. I have also bought a Dell laptop with Ubuntu.
gtk40··on Google Groups has been left to die
We use Google Groups for a non-profit I'm involved with and it works well. Not sure on a replacement that will work well for us yet.
gtk40··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
I work for a very well known retail brand and we've negotiated our average interchange fee to under 2%. I believe it is around 1.7% currently but it's been lower in the past.
gtk40··on The Last Man Without a Cell Phone
> including a vending machine on campus

I've never seen a vending machine require a cell phone. I'm curious about what is the design of it.

I've seen some that require tap-to-pay, but that would of course work with a credit card with NFC without any device.

gtk40··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
I haven't spent a lot of time in Seattle so I can't comment there, but in my experience urban supermarkets are more likely to have a parking lot underneath the building or in general have less parking than a suburban supermarket.

gtk40··on Google and Mozilla are working on iOS browsers that aren't based on WebKit
You can use uBlock Origin on Firefox for Android. The biggest feature I miss when I switched to iOS, although I've found Orion beta also has this feature and is decent.
gtk40··on Path to a free, self-taught education in Computer Science
This describes me pretty well. I started programming when I was very young. I did programming classes in high school. Then in college I started with another major and switched, but quickly got through as many classes as possible to graduate and get a job without really thinking about any of the stuff I had the opportunity to learn. Now I feel a bit locked out of certain companies because I'm not good at HackerRank, but I make really good money as a Software Engineer at a non-tech firm.
gtk40··on Path to a free, self-taught education in Computer Science
There are also plenty of 4 year institutions called "Colleges" here that are smaller too. Bowdoin College is a random example which even has a CS degree.
gtk40··on Alpine Linux in the Browser (2020)
It doesn't use GNU at all which can break compatibility with a lot of software but is no big deal if the packages are available.
gtk40··on Eggs are 60% more expensive than last year in the US
I'm curious how Costco is weathering the storm better than others. Typically Aldi is the cheapest place for me to buy eggs, but they're almost $5 a dozen for basic eggs. I've seen even more at other grocery stores (Publix was several dollars more a dozen). The cage free eggs were $7/2 dozen ($3.50/dozen) earlier this week at Costco.

I'm in the Southeastern US in a suburb of a major city.

gtk40··on Seattle woman can’t build housing without paying city $77k. Now she’s suing
I'd like to find statistics on this. I'm less familiar with Texas than Florida, and my firsthand experience with Florida has me curious. I drove from Georgia to South Florida recently and saw lots of new development, including high rises and other multi family dwelling all over central and south Florida. Even the single family neighborhoods I saw were on average denser than what I am used to in Georgia. Florida may not be developing at the same density as NYC, but it is not all single family homes either.
gtk40··on Seattle woman can’t build housing without paying city $77k. Now she’s suing
> OTOH, Texas and Florida are both a fraction of a population compared to the sum of NY + CA + MA + IL.

Texas and Florida are the 2nd and 3rd most populous states. That is misleading because you're comparing 3 out of the top 6 most populous states with them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territ...

gtk40··on The scourge of job title inflation
I don't love having an Engineer title but it's the reality of the workplace in the US at least. Software Engineer and related are very, very common. Now even some colleges and universities have degrees in Software Engineering.
gtk40··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
Different segment, but I've considered getting a Mitsubishi Mirage as they are quite simple and about the cheapest new car you can get in the US. My wife already drives a subcompact (Honda Fit) that we have been quite happy with.
gtk40··on Apple Rankings
I love the sourness and the texture. Too many popular apples are just "mealy" texture. I've tried some of the other tart or sour apples and they are just not as good.
gtk40··on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is denied a bid for new trial
Does the Walgreens partnership not count because it was more of a public trial but not production?
