Long time lurker. Figured I'd join and contribute to discussions I have strong opinions about.

What is your process for automating this checksum twice a year? Does it give you a text file dump with the absolute paths of all files that fail checksum for inspection? How often does this failure happen for you?

gtdawg··on What are your most used self-hosted applications?
Is your mail-in-a-box and Nextcloud totally separate? I know MiaB has an integrated Nextcloud, but their documentation says that they only support contacts / calendaring, so I'm hesitant to use it without fully documented support for all Nextcloud's features.

I found this through the Webcrate HN post and was looking to get more information on this organization. It sounds very similar to what Sandstorm was doing, I wonder if they are using Sandstorm as the base of their platform.

gtdawg··on Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup?
Since you are a long term nomad, I'm wondering what your solution is for Government documents (IRS, Driver License, Car Registration, Jury Duty notification, absentee voting, etc), bank statements (KYC regulations), and other things that need a real address, and not an personal mailbox service? I've had issues with using PO Boxes even with Street Addressing, but I'm not sure a UPS store box would fix those issues.

Services like EarthClassMail sound like it would fit the bill, but I'm wondering if whatever API's these SaaS services use to validate "true residential address" will eventually blocklist these services addresses.

Thanks!

gtdawg··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
Thanks for this, years ago when I was on the road and wanted to visit last minute and quickly searched for information on where to go and tours, I didn't find this gem. Really helpful to see they have a visitors center in Barstow.
gtdawg··on Voyagers Detect an Increase in the Density of Space Outside the Solar System
Any information on how to visit? I tried visiting there as a spur of the moment thing when I was passing through Barstow. The military checkpoint personnel on the road to Goldstone were not happy and turned me away after a light questioning, checking driver license and license plate against databases, and visually inspecting the inside of the vehicle from outside with the windows down.

gtdawg··on IPv6 xmas display uses 75 Internet's worth of addresses
A solution could be a Firefox browser extension that allocates a huge number of v6 addresses to your computer dynamically from your LAN /64 or /56 and creates fake garbage google usage data, so that google can never build a profile on you based on v6 address (if you are this paranoid).

Or... just stop using google and use uBlock Origin to block all Google domains.

gtdawg··on CenturyLink is blocking customer internet, saying Utah legislators told them to
True, I did forget about the Qwest acquisition from Centurylink because that was so long ago (to my memory). I do remember the days when routing problems and outages with Qwest in public forums always led to the 'Qworst' name popping up.

I also work for a shop that I recommended Level(3) DIA fiber/Layer 3 services on about 1.5 years ago. Now that it's CL, not much has changed on service or reliability.

The sales people however are still trying to expand their grasp into our organization so it's always a battle there.

gtdawg··on CenturyLink is blocking customer internet, saying Utah legislators told them to
If the title said just Centurylink instead of Utah, people would be complaining of click bait, so I think Utah was the better choice. Using "Centurylink (only in Utah)" or something similar would have been the most ideal from an accuracy POV.
gtdawg··on CenturyLink is blocking customer internet, saying Utah legislators told them to
On the retail, general consumer side: Level(3) doesn't have much of any brand recognition. That's why I said "carrier/enterprise/ISP".

On the business side, it has quite a bit of premium name recognition which seems to be getting thrown away from the way they are being swallowed up.

gtdawg··on CenturyLink is blocking customer internet, saying Utah legislators told them to
They purchased Level(3) who already previously owned Global Crossing, Savvis Video and Genuity, among other acquisitions.

The Level(3) name was much more memorable in the carrier/enterprise/ISP field and it feels like they are starting from scratch on brand recognition, because as you said, lots of people haven't heard of Centurylink before.

Edit: And as noted by the thread "CenturyLink is totally shady.", Centurylink's retail consumer reputation is quite tarnished (as are most large consumer ISP companies) and mixing that reputation with Level(3) was a bad decision, IMO.

gtdawg··on Scammers are changing the contact details for banks on Google Maps
The Google maps app is quite slow and bloated now on my Galaxy S6 and Nexus 5X. I think OSM has a great opportunity to overtake them on the "app being better" metric. Too many features have been crammed into Maps.

Pretty cool! One thing to note is the cooling capacity is limited to the consumption rate of the city based on how it's designed right now.

> The cold water drawn from Lake Ontario's deep layer in the Enwave system is not returned directly to the lake once it has been run through the heat exchange system. The Enwave system only uses water that is destined to meet the city's domestic water needs. Therefore, the Enwave system does not pollute the lake with a plume of waste heat.

gtdawg··on Taking Tesla Private
There was a HN discussion a couple of days ago complaining about companies going public much later. Could the short term quarterly horizon of public investors, as pointed out here, be a big reason companies don't IPO sooner?
gtdawg··on Fortnite Boycotts Google Play Store; Teaches Kids to Sideload
Could they build the Play store cost into the Play store option? The same game would be available through their website with two links, one for direct download from the website, and one link 30% higher to the play store. Let consumers decide how much inconvenience / insecurity that 30% is worth.
