gshdg··on Frugality Is Non-Linear (2019)
Have you even seen the returns on bonds and cash equivalents lately?
gshdg··on Frugality Is Non-Linear (2019)
It doesn't matter whether the market stays up over 30 years. If it crashes at the wrong time (especially if that's after you've retired) and you have 100K left, you have only 3 years to recover, not 30.

And even if the market recovers in 3 years, by then you're left with a fraction of your capital.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What Stops You from Switching Remote US Only to Remote Same Time Zone?
Payroll and legal complexities is the big one.

I've also run into challenges around mismatches in cultural expectations of how employer/employee or manager/report relationships should operate.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What Stops You from Switching Remote US Only to Remote Same Time Zone?
Some of us would if there were still US stuff to buy, or if finding it weren't near-impossible.
gshdg··on On Trouser Pockets
This is not exactly revolutionary. I have multiple pairs of bike shorts with slim elastic pockets in that spot. (Actually, a few inches higher, which is easier to reach without bending, and doesn't get in the way any more than the proposed location.)
gshdg··on Ask HN: If you could start your career all over again, what would you change?
I wish I'd looked for more opportunities to work with and learn from more experienced developers instead of being so overwhelmed by imposter syndrome that I was terrified to take a job where anyone who knew more than me could judge me.
gshdg··on ‘Collapse of civilisation is the most likely outcome’: top climate scientists
I suspect the chemistry of it requires as much energy put into sequestering as is captured by releasing it. But... I could be wrong.
gshdg··on Ask HN: How can I quickly trim my AWS bill?
Reserved instances? Instant 20-40% savings.
gshdg··on [dead]
What percentage of current investment is speculation for share price growth vs for dividends?
gshdg··on Ask HN: What makes our fingerprints unique?
Randomness and chaos.
gshdg··on Why hasn't the UK seen a second wave of the coronavirus?
1) mask compliance

2) they opened up restaurants only 4 days ago — not nearly enough time for a resurgence to appear. Wtf is this article even about?

gshdg··on Ask HN: How will Shelter In Place / Work From Home affect taxes this year?
What additional complications do you anticipate?

In my experience, taxes are based on your home address and your employer’s address of record, regardless of where you physically go to work.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Tell me about your dev machine
Can’t comment on that as I don’t generally use IDEs.
gshdg··on Ask HN: Is it possible to submit electron.js apps into the Mac App store?
Well, you can download it for desktop from the store, so presumably?
gshdg··on Ask HN: Tell me about your dev machine
Python, JavaScript mostly. Not sure the processor (it’s a 2019 model year, tho). 16GB memory.

Snappier/more responsive UI-wise than the 16” MB Pro I got from work, fwiw.

AFAIK, every other method requires massive electricity input; and we’re still not getting enough energy from renewables for that not to mean spewing more additional carbon than we sequester for each unit sequestered.

(Of course, trees also require massive energy input. The difference is that we don’t have to supply that energy.)

gshdg··on Ask HN: Tell me about your dev machine
Using a MacBook Air for web dev, and it’s plenty. For photoshop I’d probably want something with a faster CPU and better GPU, tho.
gshdg··on ‘Collapse of civilisation is the most likely outcome’: top climate scientists
They’re called trees.
gshdg··on Ask HN: Should you give unsolicited advise?
How about asking each time whether they’d be interested in your input?
gshdg··on Ask HN: Is it possible to submit electron.js apps into the Mac App store?
Yes. Slack is one, and it’s on the App Store.
gshdg··on Most of Europe Is a Lot Poorer Than Most of the United States (2016)
And yet more than half of Americans don’t have $400 to cover an emergency. I wonder how the US would stack up in 25th percentile wealth against European countries?

Also, there are measures like food insecurity that I suspect would be very telling.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What are your concerns about Apple's app distribution exclusivity?
Requiring developers to spend money up front for memberships to distribute software.

Obstacles to distribution of FOSS and community driven software projects.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What would you miss the most without a smartphone?
Being able to look stuff up on the go. (Turns out this laundromat is closed because COVID; where’s the next nearest one? What time does that plane land, again? And what color was the sweater I bought my mom last year, so I can get her a sweater than matches?)
gshdg··on Most of Europe Is a Lot Poorer Than Most of the United States (2016)
Yeah, looking at GDP per capita rather than median income totally disregards the inequality that makes $54k/person ludicrous to describe as typical in the US.
gshdg··on Ask HN: How to drive up employee/intern morale in an online working environment?
Start by finding out why their morale is low. This is likely to be unique to each person. Deal with their unique situations and needs.
gshdg··on Ask HN: How do you keep proper posture while seated?
There’s a pretty good chance your monitor is too low and your keyboard too high relative to one another. Make sure it’s comfortable to type and that you can look directly forward at your monitor while doing so rather than looking downward, which induces slouching and curling your shoulders, which in turn makes it more difficult to sit upright.

Make sure your desktop is at the right height for you to sit with leg joints at right angles rather than adjusting yourself or your chair to a desk that’s at some “standard” height.

gshdg··on Ask HN: How do you deal with social isolation while working from home?
By forming friendships with neighbors.
gshdg··on To Gmail, Most Black Lives Matter Emails Are“Promotions”
If unsolicited, sure. But requested mail is requested mail.

The real question is whether they file email from other causes similarly.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Why do browsers include developer tools?
History.

Firebug was the best and nearly only tool out there for a while.

Then Google took a page from Apple’s early OS X book: bundle great developer tools so developers want to write apps on your platform and not port them to others.

Meanwhile Firebug was suffering and non-performant due to not having access to the browser core. Chrome’s developer tools soon outstripped it.

Mozilla decided to rebuild Firebug’s features internally where they’d have the right permissions to perform well and debug properly and do all the fancy things Chrome’s did.

Developers loathed Internet Explorer but had to develop for it anyway, and I assume Microsoft added tools to it to keep their browser from being blackballed entirely.

Safari? Who knows.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Do you use an Ad/Content blockers?
Yes, and if the price of their revenue is exposing their users to malware, they need to find another revenue source.
