gshdg··on Viewpoint: 'I feel like I was accidentally hired'
This is totally irrelevant to the article.

The article is about assumptions people make about a black programmer because he's a programmer and because he's black, and about how disappointingly rare black programmers are.

Why are we not having a discussion about THAT?

gshdg··on Ask HN: Do you use an Ad/Content blockers?
Ads are a distraction, a waste of bandwidth and CPU (and memory, and battery —- and energy and thus harmful to the environment), a privacy nightmare, and worst of all a malware vector.

Ad blocking is the first thing I install on a new device.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What Software Engineering domains require the least continuous learning?
If you don’t care about being a crap manager, maybe.
gshdg··on Ask HN: What will happen with Mac as a dev platform after ARM?
I’d be concerned about a lot of Homebrew packages needing some porting, for instance.

Tho that seems like it’d get sorted within a year or two.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Why does HN strip out “how” from the start of titles?
It does this with numbers too. This is a fairly recent change fwiw.

Thank you!
gshdg··on Millions of Americans Can't Afford Water
Pretty sure lack of fresh water supply isn’t the problem in Philadelphia.
gshdg··on Millions of Americans Can't Afford Water
The article talks about additional penalties and interest being tacked on.
gshdg··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
The HIG used to be all about how each guideline contributed to usability. I don’t see even the slightest nod to usability in this document. That’s telling.
gshdg··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
They removed a bunch of power user functionality (ex: displaying recipient email addresses instead of names) from the Mail app in Catalina when they unified its codebases. Yes, this is going to be an issue.
gshdg··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
Which isn’t necessarily a good thing. They totally butchered the Mac Mail.app by shifting it to iOS UI paradigms. It used to be great; now it’s barely usable. Now they’re just making it easier to do the same and dumb down all the other apps out there for desktop users by replacing them with dumbed down iOS versions.
gshdg··on Low carb diet leads to “clinical remission” in 3 cases of type 1 diabetes
Nope, in a low carb plant based diet, most of your calories tend to come from fats with some from protein.

There are plenty of fats in nuts and legumes, which are compatible with a low carb (even if not a zero carb) diet. Seeds are also rich in fats (and are the source of many vegetable oils).

gshdg··on Ask HN: How to manage personal expectations and self-doubt when starting?
You’re entry level. This is expected.

Ask your manager to set explicit expectations. Ask them what you should do if you find yourself struggling with any of those expectations. Take it from there.

And... I assume you’ll eventually start charging for it?
gshdg··on Jira alternatives (ultimate break down) – not biased
Thanks for the info. What search / filter features are available?

Also, what’s the pricing model? And how do I get my data back out?

gshdg··on Low carb diet leads to “clinical remission” in 3 cases of type 1 diabetes
Not a ton of carb calories in lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc. They’re mostly composed of insoluble fiber (from which ruminants can extract calories but humans can’t) and water.

A “low carb” diet doesn’t exclude high amounts of insoluble fiber. It excludes high amounts of carbohydrate calories.

Looks interesting but there’s zero info on your site (at least in mobile) about its features. It looks a lot like Trello from the screenshots. How does it differ?
gshdg··on Ask HN: Startups on hiring Big Tech engineers
Some have been great; some have been awful. The lifers are incapable of thinking for themselves or working without someone else creating structure for them. Or are way too specialized for a startup.

With shorter tenured engineers who’ve never worked outside a larger company, watch out for over-engineering. But those who are comfortable launching non-terascale solutions to non-terascale problems can typically adapt well.

People who have gone back and forth often have a good perspective and are great to work with!

gshdg··on Why Full-Time 9 to 5 Jobs are Risky
The difference is that to succeed at getting a new job you need to be skilled at one thing. To succeed at starting a new business you need to be skilled at a dozen unrelated things.
gshdg··on Why are we so quick to scrutinise how low-income families spend their money?
Bingo!
gshdg··on Why are we so quick to scrutinise how low-income families spend their money?
I think it depends on how wealthy we’re talking about. People who make 6 figures are assumed to have earned it. People who make 8 figures or have 9 figures of wealth are assumed to have inherited it or worked the system without having put in the effort to earn it.
gshdg··on John Stewart Used White-Hat Hacker Analogy for Trump
Chaos monkey seems more apt. Except set loose in a system without robust resiliency.
gshdg··on Ask HN: Where can I find practical, no-fluff management advice?
Book: The Manager’s Path by Camille Fournier

Bloggers: Lara Hogan

gshdg··on Ask HN: When will we have mobile browser extensions and ad-blocking?
Nope. It’s just non-obvious to experiences desktop browser users because desktop browser ad blockers are extensions, not standalone apps. And Apple didn’t do the best job of publicizing the feature.

I use Refine, fwiw.

gshdg··on Ask HN: Is Git as the only SCM ecosystem healthy?
Mercurial is still alive
gshdg··on Ask HN: What real-time chat are you using in place of slack?
Because I’m already familiar with Discord.

Looking for more options and trying to avoid the reflexive “but discord” response or the discussion devolving into a debate about the pros and cons of Discord.

gshdg··on Ask HN: What real-time chat are you using in place of slack?
Because Discord is such a reflexive answer and everyone piling onto it would interfere with surfacing a broader set of ideas. Discord is ok, but I find its ergonomics much poorer than Slack’s.
gshdg··on Ask HN: What real-time chat are you using in place of slack?
This, basically. We have a LOT of part-time contractors to coordinate with. And would ideally like to open it to our customers as well, with more limited permissions.
gshdg··on Ask HN: How many females do you work with?
I’m not sure I understand what point you’re trying to make with the graphic and terse question. Could you please expand on that?
gshdg··on Ask HN: How many females do you work with?
I work on an engineering team of 15 with 5 women.

None of whom would find it acceptable to be called “females”.

That’s not “language policing” as described elsewhere in the thread.

You don’t see men in the workplace being called “males”. “Female” and “male” as nouns are used to describe animals. It’s dehumanizing. Don’t do it.
