grubbs··on After 28 years, SSLv2 is still not gone from the internet
Man is it ever a pain to access old iDracs / BMCs with a modern browser :(
grubbs··on ROCm is AMD's priority, executive says
I remember chatting with some Nvidia rep at CES 2008. He showed me how cuda could be used to accelerate video upscale and encoding. I was 19 at the time and just a hobbyist. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.

(And yes I "snuck" in to CES using a fake business card to get my badge)

grubbs··on Ask HN: I'm a SWE without a CS degree. Will online certs help me get into FAANG?
I remember watching that Freakonomics documentary on Netflix a decade ago. One of the authors mentions "not getting a HS degree is an economic death sentence". I guess times have changed.
grubbs··on Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account
I'd just like mine to turn to a brown hue when any of the bathrooms in my household are occupied.
grubbs··on National Motorcycle Museum Closing Its Doors
I think they still use that stadium for HS and maybe even some special event college games?
grubbs··on National Motorcycle Museum Closing Its Doors
The pro football Hall of Fame is in Canton, Ohio.

I guess it's near a regional airport. Still a pretty random spot though.

grubbs··on National Motorcycle Museum Closing Its Doors
Yes but the national aquarium in Baltimore has puffins and that's good enough claim for me.
grubbs··on Mystery 'golden egg' found on ocean floor
That movie always creeped me the hell out when I was younger.

I should rewatch.

grubbs··on Memories from old LAN parties
One of my finest memories was at a lan of around 150 people. We had everyone install Natural Selection half life mod and had a full match going for hours.

Similar happened at another even a few years later. Had about 30 people playing that revolutionary war half life mod on LAN. I think it was called BG mod or something. Good times.

grubbs··on Flipper Zero can spam nearby iPhones with Bluetooth pop-ups
Yea I'd like to grab one literally to copy my garage keycard at work. I always forget and have to pay ridiculous rates in the city...
grubbs··on The boy who stole Half-Life 2 (2011)
I vaguely remember playing it. It was total garbage (the leaked copy). You could play maybe a few levels etc. Ultra buggy.

I think my buddy burned it to 3 CD-Rs and it spread around my gaming friends in HS pretty quickly.

grubbs··on Methodus Toolz
Me either! I had no idea. Just thought about Methodus in the shower this morning and decided to Google...
grubbs··on Ask HN: Underrated music, books, movies?
Primer - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/
grubbs··on Dollar Tree is the latest retailer to say shoplifting is squeezing margins
Is it though? When I share a song on a public BitTorrent tracker and get caught. Should each infringement be worth six figures?
grubbs··on 2009scape
Had a similar experience. I was a complete addict in High School to late 90's Everquest. I believe the project was EQEmu and I was able to spin up a local SQL server and run my own private server. I had no idea what I was doing at the time but I got it to work and was able to have friends join me...over my dialup connection. Unreal at the time :)
grubbs··on Try the last internet Kermit server
My father was an engineer and I guess saw the value in uninterrupted Internet. We had three phone lines in our home..maybe we should have just gone with ISDN now that I think about it.
grubbs··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
I don't think you can be thrown in jail. Just torrenting a film and watching it would be a civil offense?

Now making copies and selling them on the street corner is another story.

grubbs··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
Can easily buy compromised accounts for most torrent sites on the dark web.
grubbs··on Escaping High School
Your post reminded me of this article from almost a decade ago. Using James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem as a great example:

grubbs··on Spore Stats
I remember playing this game quite a bit instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_%26_White_(video_game)
grubbs··on Show HN: Rarbg on IPFS
I just searched for that new Blackberry docu.

There is a lot of weird pornographic films with "Blackberry" in the name.

grubbs··on Two students built an A-bomb (2003)
Always reminds me of this film. Haven't watched it in many years: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091472/
grubbs··on 1990 Impact Electric Drag Race [video]
Sadly, I haven't seen a 300ZX in many years.

Remember this Superbowl commerical? https://youtu.be/uXdFKcETEPg

grubbs··on 1990 Impact Electric Drag Race [video]
The story behind the EV1 is pretty interesting if you haven't read up on it. They were all crushed eventually. I think there's only a handful left. One is at a university in the Midwest. Pretty sure OSU.
grubbs··on WSJ Article: Think You’re Too Young to Need a Colonoscopy? Think Again
I've seen a few posts on HN over the years on this exact topic. Always seems like the general consensus is people would like to get screened earlier. But their doctors won't order the test / insurance won't cover it until you're older.

Do we just lie then? Tell our doctors we have colon cancer that runs in our fam? That I saw blood in my stool last week?

Friend saw blood in her stool ONCE and her PCP ordered a colonoscopy immediately.

My grandfather actually had colon cancer and my parents keep nagging me to get screened. I tell literally all of my docs (PCP, therapist, med management doc, dentist, prob more I'm forgetting). Nobody has ever even acknowledged it. I guess I'll wait til I'm 50? 55? I don't even know.

grubbs··on ‘Hot Ones’ Was a Slow Burn All Along
"Taco in a bag"?

How was the restroom the next morning ;)

grubbs··on Switching to Fedora from Ubuntu
My local library installed Linux on all of their desktops when a refresh cycle was needed. Basically prevented them from buying all new computers at 10s of thousands of $$$.
grubbs··on The FBI’s Contract to Buy Mass Internet Data
"Team Cymru explicitly markets its product’s capability of being able to track traffic through virtual private networks, and show which server traffic is originating from. "

How does this work exactly?

grubbs··on Shane Pitman, leader of the warez group Razor 1911: life after prison (2005)

grubbs··on Purple-Teams: MS Teams Plugin for Pidgin (2022)
Company I worked for from 2012-2016 still uses the OpenFire + Pidgin approach for internal IM that I set up around 2013-ish.

I couldn't pry it from their hands. All the employees loved it.

OTR did work well. But causes some small issues with other plugins. I still love how customizable everything was. Both on the server and client.
