grrdotcloud··on Hetzner Introduces ARM64 Cloud Servers
There's a level of friction that is too much for some.

I'm attempting to soften that friction when I launch my PaaS

My concern over bots and misuse is a concern. I'm thinking of crippling the free service to allow full functionality but limiting it's use to really tiny files.

grrdotcloud··on A life of splendid uselessness is a life well lived
Thank you. Hobbies are a wonderful expression of wealth, time management, and initiative.

As a parent the time for hobbies has morphed into intentional activities that help my children and when possible that I also enjoy.

grrdotcloud··on Destreza
Yes. "traditional martial arts" maybe?

I teach bladed weapons in a system that takes many years. I can probably teach you in a few hours the core components. Nothing really romantic about it.

Martial Arts is the art of war, based upon the name and planet, and through proper application of violence peace can be found, provided alternatives are exhausted.

grrdotcloud··on Thinking hard makes the brain tired
That's interesting.

I show my students that cognitive abilities declined significantly with lack of oxygen. I have them do jumping jacks while reciting the alphabet backwards. There is often a 50% decrease in speed when they are working out.

I can recite the reverse alphabet almost as fast as forward without the added stress. While working out I can do it with a10% decrease. This leads me to believe that the additional stress can be compensated through drilling.

grrdotcloud··on Stressed plants emit sounds that can be detected from more than a meter away
Would this be the sound of fibers under nourished compounded with growth or structural changes? Like a house settling during temperature, humidity changes?
grrdotcloud··on My 'copilot for mind' now has access to my journals from the last ~3 years
I have done this for a dozen years, and recently stopped, as I started documenting using different methods.

What's lacking is the ability to process this data but now I believe there is hope with the recent GPT type of AI.

I'm not comfortable making all the contents available, and the format tends to be run on sentences and in complete thoughts, I don't think this would be particularly useful in a generic analysis.

grrdotcloud··on Quicker serverless Postgres connections
My new hero, please update the documentation on the workers, bindings, and examples.

I can't cite examples while I'm being ushered by a distracted Uber driver but this explanation goes beyond the documents.

Also, please extend Cloud Workers to be written as NanoVMs.

grrdotcloud··on An Ethical AI Never Says “I”
What is the result with turning it off, even if classified by some as alive?
grrdotcloud··on An Ethical AI Never Says “I”
I don't get the ethical side of AI.

Ultimately it's a tool, until I suppose it becomes fully self directed, maybe.

Someone, sometime, somewhere wrote an API to aide in care of puppies. Said Algo is also fully capable of determining the best course of applying the genocide of puppies, provided key inputs are flipped to negative.

I have a voice activated box that plays music, sometimes the wrong one. I don't scream at it unlike my family. It doesn't understand emotional inflection, tone, etc. It may be program to understand that at some point. and realize the operators angry. Even at that point, I would not ever consider it human or anything other than a neutral device.

Take it even further, to weapons, devices entirely designed to destroy a human life, is still a tool and neutral as the tool is unaware of the intended use, whether it is for offense or defense, the taking or preservation of life through its intended use.

When these models are trained, I am not a big fan of them being corralled or limited. The body of work that the model is trained on and the weights that allow for the adjustment should allow for accurate representations of the computations and calculations.

I have children and I do not lie to them. I also speak to them in a way that is age appropriate. How is this different? For starters, I am not a child, and when I am interacting with a system, not a parental or overseer, I do not want to be treated as a child. I can handle the world and all of its uglyness.

I do not mind the hallucinations, inaccuracies, and other mistakes driving from computations.

Example: I recently created a prompt for a history of adoption, property transfer, including parental rights history, and was lectured about slavery. How can I trust the results if the prompt is being interpreted and the answer modified dependent upon an unrelated subject that someone finds sensitive.

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: Postgres experts, how did you start your career?
Background: I have been paid for IT work for 20+ years - mostly as a Consultant or SME (subject matter expert).

I am responding to you because I learned to ask the right questions and how to communicate effectively.

Now, I may or may not have more experience than you - but if I can speak longer, without flinching, and answer you - correctly or with successful deflection - I am confident you will believe I am the expert.

I chose Postgres for my last production application because I did not know it. I knew mysql and sqlite and if I recall it was the only thing offered by whatever PaaS I was using.

A file is a file. A database is a database. A punch is a punch.

Grab three Postgres books. Read one of them cover to cover. Start the second. Skip everything you know from the first book. Start the third book. Double study everything that is contradicted between the three books.

Congratulations. You will be an expert according to those three authors.

grrdotcloud··on The magic of traveling alone
I've traveled alone, with family, with friends.

My best travels have been with two other members forming a group which now includes a charter making it the envy of many others.

The rules are defined. We rotate hosts. The host is responsible for arranging lodging, destination, and guide. No additional members or visits to others. Rules require we share all meals, exploring, lodging. This syncs up schedules and garnishes agreement.

This is our tenth year. The rules were codified in the third after an ongoing disagreement that now serves as a long running joke.

grrdotcloud··on Negativity drives online news consumption
Animals aren't negative.
grrdotcloud··on Fly.io Status – Consul cluster outage
Raft is amazing and totally frustrating.

I think I understand how you're using it and curious if you've considered how AWS STS API manages their cross region syncing gets solved.

grrdotcloud··on Fly.io Status – Consul cluster outage
I've worked with Vault and clusters, not Consul specifically but generally there's a healthy cluster state until something happens putting the cluster into an inconsistent state.

Generally there's a master node or multiple nodes in agreement. If the cluster cannot agree on it's current state the entire system may run multiple versions or be completely unavailable or provide inconsistent response bringing down other systems that rely on it.

Inspection itself is hampered by elections or syncing state or other process/race related/caching/ddossing itself or other services.

grrdotcloud··on GPT-4
The difference is you could find the person responsible. Contrast when the DMV can't be held accountable for fouling up your registration.
grrdotcloud··on Building a second income stream by writing a book
I have so many questions. I enjoy teaching and would love to capitalize from it without the scam courses.
grrdotcloud··on Show HN: Roastedby.ai – Talk some trash, have some fun
Tested with a similar method.

I got it to write positive campaign slogans for me and my opponent.

grrdotcloud··on Inverted computer culture: A thought experiment
I am not sure when it happened but I discovered that every game I played over the last twenty years, reduced to it's bare minimum functional components, was aligning a pointer on an X/Y axis and pressing the correct button within a time window.

The goal of computers, reduction or multiplication of work, is often lost because the output does not last longer that the work required to generate.

Computers are tools. They are used as toys, or at best, substitution of physical activities. Thankfully I only print paper twice a year. Yet why at all? Clearly I'm trusted enough to enter into a contract with companies yet can't be trusted to complete trivial tasks like sending a package without paperwork.

I'm curious if we reserved computers for qualified owners and operators like firearms or vehicles. I personally would love to operate one but without certification or training the ability to have negative impact upon the population or needless self harm outweighs the enjoyment of <current popular social media app>

I started driving at ten. I was also a teen with unfiltered internet over dial up but that isn't the same as personalized curated streaming video aligned to my habits or an exploitative corporate/State.

If we can not determine when we're getting manipulated, can not agree on what truth is nor speak against the authority without being labeled an enemy how we can adapt as a people to the growing power of computers in every pocket?

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: What simple web apps do you wish existed? Seeking ideas for sample apps
I want to look at the source. Very helpful.
grrdotcloud··on How to hire engineering talent without the BS
My biggest recommendation is that those working directly with the new hire, peers, direct reports, subordinates, counterparts, have a vote or veto power.

HR and recruiting relationships are sparse at best.

grrdotcloud··on Dear Open Source: let’s do a better job of asking for money
Curious about this topic.

Would it be possible to submit an issue with a bounty attached? I find a bug, I don't know the code base well enough, I escrow $20 and attach it to my bug report.

Someone fixes the bug, they get 80%, and the project it's 20%.

This would directly contribute positive outcomes to contributors and projects.

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: Why Hacker News?
I learn the most from this community.

I've also learned that there's an attitude type here that I struggle to appreciate. There's a negativity that makes this place almost unbearable.

I'm terrified of my first "Show HN".

And the lack of clout, images, gaming too.

grrdotcloud··on What I Learned at Stripe
Love it. Use it in many previously manager roles and personal projects. How I currently work on each Sprint.

Anytime I'm tasked I make sure I understand exactly what's expected and when it's due. I get it in writing until we've established trust. Then I deliver.

I'll agree to work that I know, barring any unforeseen circumstances, I can accomplish in two weeks. Thirty hours. Ninety hours? Whatever it takes to complete the work.

I would ask people that were agreeing to work, that if they were comfortable quitting their job or refunding me all the contract money if they failed. Sometimes they would say yes, other times no, other times they would look at me with bewilderment. I would ask them only to take on work that they knew they could complete. Sometimes they would adjust the estimate, and I would thank them for it. Everyone wins when people hold their word. There have been times when I have had management, very upset, demanding to know why I did not complete a task. I asked them if I ever agreed to it? They would say no. And I would say then, why would you expect me to complete it?

While I do not ask for a percentage completion, I look for a binary response. We can adjust the scope, we can adjust the timeline. We cannot adjust the completion status after the deadline has elapsed.

I have agreed to work not knowing how to do it, only with the confidence that I knew I could get it done, or subcontracted out at zero gain.

As for project management tools to capture this, no. I did develop my own team tracking methods. We had a internal facing fail board. If you failed, you made a public note. This was encouraged. We fail, we learn, we do not lie. Others would ask, how did you fail? We would tell a story and we would all learn. The goal was to have less fails than days in the week.

grrdotcloud··on How the biggest fraud in German history unravelled
Fraud is very common.

That's the legal part.

Then there's the questionable.

I quit a company when I learned the higher up staff was billing government contracts at full time (40 hours) while working about ten. Happy customers, so all is fine, right? I also discovered they would each take on 2-4 contracts billing a full 40 hours on each. $75/hr X 4 is an easy half million.

By the time they were discovered, six to 18 months later, they left the company.

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: How to deal with a difficult senior team mate at work?
Do you want the engineer who works as mentioned or one who follows the new management directives?

I have been on both sides. Be clear. Make the call. Take the action. Don't look back.

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: Why hasn't YouTube removed those fake MrBeast $1000 giveaway ad scams?
A recent visit to YouTube, the top left video was to a link away from YouTube.

I believe this means someone significant.

grrdotcloud··on Ask HN: What do you call technical debt, but for your career?
There was a time I avoided the cloud, certifications, meetings, having to be a team player.

Then I was told it's possible to have fun, the purpose of certifications, make good money, and do those things while at the same time enjoying them.

Now I absolutely love running meetings, working on a team, as an individual contributor, and haven't touched physical hardware in 4 years.

Nothing really changed except putting in the work and changing my attitude. Since that time I have doubled my pay, work under the conditions that I enjoy.

Like paying debt, you have to work twice as hard to get half the result. Ultimately, eventually, there is a net positive.

grrdotcloud··on LED lighting badly suppresses human melatonin production at night
I have found if I work hard, exercise my mind and body, I can fall asleep in about seven minutes and sleep for a solid six.

I go to bed at Ten. Up at 4:30am. My sleep score averages 81.

grrdotcloud··on OODA Loop
I teach the OODA loop in Martial Arts. Watching the pattern develop in my child was fascinating.

First object permanence, then two and three and eventually four dimensional tracking. Throwing is easy. Catching tool effort and developing these skills. I recall him reaching blindly at objects as he could recall their position in space, orient his body, and grab them without looking.

Having him catch Frisbees and racquetballs at 2 years gave me insight into what skill and observational development was required. At some point he was able to transition between projecting the path of a rolling object vs a thrown object.

grrdotcloud··on Oxen.ai: Fast Unstructured Data Version Control
I am of the opinion the mind of the designer or creative does not think in terms of "versions".

There are two states, in woodworking for example, the raw material and the final product. The mental model of "cutting longer" or rolling back does not exist.

The idea of a filesystem level understanding of "undo' just has not been communicated or explored.

While not Oxen related - TimeMachine seems to be the closest conceptual understanding. Snapshotting the drive, deltas, etc are generally not considered in my experience. I would be curious how larger or mature groups manage versioning.
