groundthrower··on Swimmable Cities
Yes, we went to Tanto but considering how much water that Stockholm is surrounded with, I can’t say it’s very accessible. That is also the view of some friends living there.
groundthrower··on Swimmable Cities
I have some questions on this.

Living on west coast of Sweden, our family went to Stockholm this summer and as the temperature rose, we asked were to go and swim and basically no one knew and we didn’t see people doing it either.

groundthrower··on OpenBSD Workstation Hardening
Why do we always have hardening guides? Ain’t there any OS where an easening/loosening guide is needed instead?
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Do you still “need” the .com in 2023?
So our small company has like foo-bar.com Foobar.com has been occupied for a long time, there’s nothing there and they do not respond to our emails either.

This has been the case for a few years now, I guess it works but ideally we would really like the one without the hyphen

groundthrower··on Ask HN: How small startups deal with long security questionnaires from clients?
We just did the Cyber Essentials as we have no certifications and a customer in UK required this. Then we thought we could go ahead to get the Cyber Essentials Plus as well. At least we can now say we have had a cybersecurity audit from an external party - hopefully it will put some more trust to these endless questionnaires.
groundthrower··on $5.6B cloud company Fivetran acquired its way to survival
So much this
groundthrower··on Reasons to tour by bicycle
Have cycled from Northern Europe to South Africa, crossed Europe several times and also crossed US, New York to California. Best way to experience a country.

Don’t have time? Try to do a quick one and turn it into an adventure. One of my most exciting trips was going from Southern to Northern Europe in just a week.

I recommend to pack lightly, and don’t spend to much time planning on gear and routes - just do it otherwise you’ll risk to postpone it again and again.. just do it.

groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Thanks, appreciated!
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Yes this is one concern. Are you sure it was a result of using non ECC mem and how did you find out it was because of that?
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Hmm, yes we are already using jemallocator actually
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
We do not do any disk operations at all
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
It’s written in Rust and uses Rayon to a big extent. It’s receiving data to crunch maybe once every 5 minutes
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Roughly 10% faster
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
We have examined that as well, last week we tried a AMD 5950X which has half the amount of cores but much better single core performance - the result was still at 60% of the Epyc performance
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
We have already tried that and use Lambdas as last point of backup if the other servers aren’t available- however the performance is about 1/50 compared to our current production server
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
It does not consume much memory but do lots of allocations/deallocations. No disc operations whatsoever.
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Running production server on M1 mini?
Well, it waits for calculations which take about 2 seconds to complete on average - the vast majority of the time it’s idle
groundthrower··on Compile Python applications into stand-alone executables
A huge Corp really wanted our app but not the cloud based SPA app we offered - they wanted “executables” with no data stored in the cloud. Ended up creating a electron app, using our SPA and django packaged with pyinstaller that fires up as a child process. Thus a local backend with SQLIte. It’s now rolled out and works great.
groundthrower··on Ask HN: What do you think about Docker Compose?
May I ask why? Thinking about using it on a production cluster of two nodes for easy orchestration.
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Is the ISO 27001 certification worth it?
We have been asked by Fortune500s for the ISO27001 along with the hundreds of security related questions. We got through without the certificate by convincing them in other ways how much we(the 2 of us) focus on security.
groundthrower··on Six more zeros are to be removed from Venezuelan currency
I cycled into Zimbabwe sometime 2008 and exchanged one usd to 500.000.000 Zim dollars. One week later I left the country and it had increased to 1.2 bn. The shops were almost empty - except for large quantities of Heinz ketchup.
groundthrower··on Ask HN: How do you control your inflating AWS bill?
We use Hetzner for compute intense services. I think last time we checked a similar configuration was 10x more expensive on AWS (which we still use for other services)
groundthrower··on Check If Email Exists
I sometimes use it for sales. Looking up a company on LinkedIn, then finding the name of a person I want to each our to but am not sure about the email. Then I could try the classic first name.last name @ domain to see if it’s worth sending an email
groundthrower··on Stripe Tax
Also wondering about this. Having a one man band b2b only saas, in EU. Have few customers in US to whom I just send an invoice with no tax added. This is what I heard from long ago was how you do.

Have never registered any taxes abroad in any country. For EU customers I collect VAT no and do the quarterly report but for all other countries I’ve done nothing. I have basically been doing this wrong then?

groundthrower··on Ask HN: Where is a nice place to host which is not AWS / GCP types
We use AWS except for some compute intense stuff at Hetzner. The same machine is about 10x the price at AWS
groundthrower··on The architecture behind a one-person tech startup
I run a b2b saas that is used daily by some fortune500s. I have been going through rigorous vetting processes but have only once been asked about this. I lied and told them it is no problem. I usually pretend my company is larger than it is (me).

It gives me a headache now and then, and am now in the process to get someone else onboard.

groundthrower··on SUSE targets pre-summer IPO
My first experience with Linux was also after ordering their CD package... maybe around 5 discs? I almost remember first time ever logging in through the terminal after installation. Wow
groundthrower··on Show HN: QEMU front end for M1 and Intel Macs
I have the same requirement, but ended up building the final bundles to lambda in the cloud instead. However I am quite excited about the new container image support for lambda meaning I guess you do not have to compile for musl anymore.
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Are you experiencing kernel panics on your M1 Mac?
Same here
groundthrower··on Ask HN: Cookie popups – how annoyed are you?
Maybe off topic, but if the only cookie set is for Google Analytics, and I anonymize ip - do I still need consent from users? My understanding is that only data that can be tracked to a certain user needs consent per gdpr?
