grok22··on Things you can’t do in Rust (and what to do instead)
The column for the Rust language on this page (https://scattered-thoughts.net/writing/how-safe-is-zig/) with the rows of "compile time" for various memory issues is what is selling me on Rust that I am spending time with it hoping to sacrifice some difficult current learning time and some future tedious development and compile time to save on painful debug time for some kinds of issues. The problem is that the pay-off is at the end :-).
grok22··on Professor who harnessed power of cactuses is a top inventor
I think the vitriol is because they profit scandalously from their efforts.
grok22··on U.S. Labor Secretary throws support behind classifying gig workers as employees
I guess that is what is happening here...fixing any problems using the existing model instead of trying to figure out new ways of fixing the problems to fix the new model of employment in some industries.
grok22··on U.S. Labor Secretary throws support behind classifying gig workers as employees
As someone who doesn't have any skin in this game, I too think the about the same things. That we are going towards fixing any problems by forcing companies to make gig-workers employees instead of fixing the systemic problems in the gig-economy in other ways. To me having the freedom to freelance while making decent money seems to be a tremendous benefit giving people lots of flexibility.
grok22··on Yayagram
Yeah, this is something I too struggle to understand. A kid new to it quickly gets the basics of an iPad. But a grandma struggles with it. Maybe all their preconceived notions cause a mental barrier for some older folks in adopting new technology? Maybe it's just that people are variable in their adaptability and there probably will be kids too who find using an iPad really hard.
grok22··on Yayagram
Something like this needs to be made commercial at a reasonable price-point :-(. It will help bridge the technology gap between aged grand-parents who aren't comfortable with modern tech and up-to-date grand-kids who live in far-flung places and are more comfortable with the newer methods of communication. Also connecting to a network must be made transparent somehow in these devices like Kindle's WhisperNet.
grok22··on Surprisingly little alcohol can affect heart rate variability
Because it involves humans? I am only half-joking, but I think it's much harder to track and study large numbers of humans than it is to do esoteric particle physics experiments.
grok22··on Grain: A strongly-typed functional programming language for the modern web
I've always found Pyret's home-page the best at this: https://www.pyret.org/ -- I wish this was more than just an educational language.
grok22··on Ask HN: I bought Voltaren at the chemist, now Google shows me ads for it. Why?
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/05/google-tracking-cred... -- that's from a quick Google search. Even though the article says "secretly" etc...there is really no conspiracy theory-like secret to this and it's well-known that everyone sells data to whomever they can make money from. It's more like what user jonahbenton has explained in another comment. The makers of Voltaren are able to broadly advertise to anyone who might be interested in Voltaren -- they don't know specific users. But Google (or any other advertising provider) has access to info on who might be interested in Voltaren at present -- which might be decided based on various factors including your credit-card purchase data. If Google does wants to dig down, they probably can use various info to drill down to you specifically and that is what makes people rightly uncomfortable, but what I am trying to say is that in general they are not specifically targeting you for the ad -- but a broad category/bucket of "people who might be interested in Voltaren at present". One might say it is the same thing...
grok22··on Why has no one made a better Goodreads
But the swap is for free (+cost of shipping). So of no value to one of those kinds of entrepreneurs (unless maybe they find a way to arbitrage shipping costs).
grok22··on Show HN: Encore – Go backend framework with superpowers
Some of things like API documentation generation and automatic cloud provisioning looks cool. It looks interesting and different from other frameworks and has a lot to figure out and understand.
grok22··on Show HN: Encore – Go backend framework with superpowers
What do you mean by "static analysis"? Is there something like a compilation step outside of running go to do this analysis and code-generation?
grok22··on Turing Award goes to Aho and Ullman
Weird, I remember the book as being too dense and cryptic without sufficient explanatory text for a compilers course when I originally read it...maybe I am mis-remembering. I will have to find a copy and take another look.
grok22··on Ask HN: What are some tools you wish you had while doing your day to day work?
Someone posted this a week or so earlier: https://justine.lol/ape.html -- that might meet your portable executable format?
grok22··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Today I came again across this poem ("Do not go gentle into that good night", by Dylan Thomas) that is relevant here -- it gives you a sense of the perspective of the opposite side from yours: https://poets.org/poem/do-not-go-gentle-good-night
grok22··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
WireDoc [1] is a service I've used a few times that has an interesting mechanism where a party with an account on the system can send or request to receive files from another party that doesn't have an account.

grok22··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Why is your perspective more correct that the perspective of the person who doesn't want to die? I think we all know that people are of various natures and think in a myriad number of ways and refuse to accept that mostly so that society remains stable.

But I feel that assuming this perspective is better than the other one (about not wanting to die) in this respect (for this particular thing about wanting to live or die on one's deathbed) is just a way of rationalizing death rather than accepting that people just have different natures.

grok22··on Top Craziest Drinks Sold in Japan
Yeah, that was a weird one that had no commentary about the sardines which most people would've been curious about. Instead they mention Jackie Chan multiple times and he needs no explanation!
grok22··on Implementing "defer"
The article references 'defer' being in several newer languages, but seems to have missed the 'scope' implementation in the D language which I think was implemented long before the other languages got their 'defer' feature.
grok22··on Checked C
Just read that the remobjects folks' elements compiler platform can also compile go...go figure!

grok22··on Ask HN: Paid/free lightweight solutions to host tech blog/site easily
That fact that you were yak-shaving implies that you wanted to get certain details just right or you want it to function a specific way just for you. And that implies software with more functionality that you can tweak. So inevitably more complex software. If it really was '$script article.md > article.html', you could simply do that with your own domain -- just put up the html on your domain with a link to it (which is trivial to do)! Also, I think thinking about "small CSS/minimal JS" etc means also that you are mixing up concerns -- seems like you are too much concerned about the tools than about the writing...sorry, not trying to criticize, but got reminded of myself when I attempt to do something trivial and go off into the weeds thinking about the tools that get my job done instead of getting the job done. :-). The tools won't fix a writing problem and you should focus on the writing and see if they are worth the trouble finding the right tools for the job.

And to answer your question, wordpress.com, ghost.org, medium.com -- all of them provide simple publishing that meets your requirements (except perhaps for the 'minimal' part).

grok22··on Apple Watch Identifies SARS-CoV2 Infection and Predicts Diagnosis
Is there something else like the WHOOP band, but sold as a standalone device (the WHOOP band is given free with a fitness subscription service!)?
grok22··on Ask HN: Team fun event ideas during WFH?
We did this once as a farewell to a departing team member -- share-a-drink-over-zoom; worked quite well too. Mostly people chatting and reminiscing and discussing the current customer-from-hell -- it was an unexpectedly good way to bond. Maybe it worked well because the focus was on one person. But zoom can be a pain for separate one-on-one conversations in a group -- but there are now newer online conference systems that seem to facilitate that (haven't used any of those though).
grok22··on Mnm – an open source project to replace email and SMTP
Not sure why that is a problem given the problem domain -- all those high-level features is what will help people consider adopting this. But email can only improve if you fix the whole eco-system including the server side -- which then means also dealing with the protocol. The modification to the protocol will probably help with all those "high-level" features.
grok22··on Alternative lightweight UI library to modern day frameworks
It's not clear why there is not more attention paid to apprun...it is a very simple framework/library while being powerful conceptually too.
grok22··on If it will matter after today, don't talk about it in a chat room
Isn't that just a company policy? At some-point, the lawyers will get clued-in and require that even on Slack and other company-wide chat there be a limited retention window!
grok22··on If it will matter after today, don't talk about it in a chat room
There are various services like WireDoc, ShareFile, etc, or even Mozilla's deprecated Firefox Send that canonized this (encrypt on one channel, share the password on a separate channel).
