griffinmb··on Ask HN: I've got one user. What's the best way to get more?
Right now, it's a tool that emails you if a new port opens up on your site. "Pingdom for open ports". I built it in response to a couple friends who got their sites hacked after deploying updates with mongodb or elasticsearch ports open.

The site is http://www.scriptcat.io (I submitted it to HN previously).

griffinmb··on Ask HN: I've got one user. What's the best way to get more?
Thanks for the response!

I think one of my issues is that the app provides a technical service, so it's limited to programmer friends who are all mostly work acquaintances. I'm not sure why, but I was hesitant to share it in the workplace. I suppose it's as good a place as any!

griffinmb··on Show HN: ScriptCat – Like Pingdom for ports
Hey everyone! I built this tool to email you if a new port opens up on your site to prevent you from accidentally opening yourself up to attacks.

The tool is free, but you are limited to a single site right now. If you want more, shoot me an email and I can increase your site-count.

If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to talk! I'll be on this thread, and my email is in my profile.

griffinmb··on Nanodegree Plus: Get hired within six months of graduating, or tuition refund
It would be great to know what the curriculum actually is. "Senior Web Developer" is for "intermediate front-end developers" -- does that mean it's front-end focused? Maybe I'm missing the links to the syllabi, but if not I'd like to see them.

Edit: I feel dumb now. If you scroll down on the detail page, there is more information. For some reason I thought it was just the footer down there.

griffinmb··on A new way police are surveilling: Calculating threat ‘score’
It reminds me of Psycho-Pass.

"Psycho-Pass is set in 2113. The Sibyl System (シビュラシステム Shibyura Shisutemu?) is actively measuring the populace's mental states, personalities, and the probability that individuals will commit crimes, using a "cymatic scan" of the brain. The resulting assessment is called a Psycho-Pass (サイコパス Saikopasu?). When the probability of a person engaging in crimes measured by the Crime Coefficient (犯罪係数 Hanzaikeisū?) index exceeds a certain level in an individual, he or she is pursued, apprehended, and killed if necessary."

griffinmb··on How Tor Works: Part One
Thanks for the link! I've finally put my money where my mouth is and donated.
griffinmb··on How Tor Works: Part One
I agree that terms like "dark web" and "deep web" have been used so much (and often interchangeably), that they've mostly lost their meaning. That being said, I've always used "dark web" in reference to things like hidden services, i2p, etc, and I've used "deep web" to mean unindexed/inaccessible content.
griffinmb··on Glassdoor: Airbnb dethrones Google as the best tech company to work for in U.S
In my experience, "summer hours" mean half-day Fridays over the summer. I'd never heard the term until I moved to NYC.

To elaborate: Apparently the idea is that people could use it as travel time for weekend trips. Drive up to the Hamptons on Friday after lunch, have a full Saturday/Sunday to relax at the beach. Though I use it primarily for afternoon naps.

griffinmb··on When Undercover Credit Card Buys Go Bad
Could be blockchain analysis. Block accounts that receive bitcoin from known seized funds, like a Silk Road wallet. Basically just the opposite of tactics companies like Coinbase employ.
griffinmb··on C.S. Lewis' Greatest Fiction: Convincing Kids That They'd Like Turkish Delight
I loved them, so I bought my family boxes of them last Christmas. They complained that the turkish delight tasted like flowers/perfume -- now that's all I can taste, and I don't get it often anymore.
griffinmb··on Webtorrent – BitTorrent over WebRTC
I don't, unfortunately. The webtorrent docs are very straightforward though. And if you check their npm, they provide a link to cdn hosted source!

Note: sorry for any grammar issues, on mobile now

griffinmb··on Webtorrent – BitTorrent over WebRTC
Nope! Just plain JS.
griffinmb··on Webtorrent – BitTorrent over WebRTC
If anyone feels like testing it out, I was actually just playing with webtorrent a couple days ago: https://stark-springs-9580.herokuapp.com/

It's very basic, and doesn't have proper error messaging. Would recommend only attempting to stream mp4 (h264) if you're giving it a shot.

griffinmb··on Jessica Livingston
The several times I've ever been quoted in a blurb/paper/article, it was taken horribly and embarrassingly out of context. So, in my experience, these quotes almost certainly don't reflect reality.
griffinmb··on Avoid Humans: Your temporary respite from the masses
I like late-night park walks. Very relaxing, very few people.
griffinmb··on Was the Blair Witch Project the last great horror film?
I assume you haven't seen most of those, as several of the movies he lists are among the greatest, genre-defining horror films of all time. So, yeah... Blair Witch is hardly the last great horror film.
griffinmb··on Gigabytes of user data from hack of Patreon donations site dumped online
I believe you are thinking of a different platform. Patreon is a Kickstarter-like site, but with a monthly pledge. It is not for music hosting.
griffinmb··on Inside Popcorn Time – the world's fastest growing piracy site
Netflix licenses the right to stream films and pays based on that agreement rather than per-view, which is why movies are phased in and out. They have to continually renegotiate contracts.

As for geographic restrictions, movie distribution rights typically aren't global. When a movie is produced, one distributor has North America, another distributor gets Europe, etc. Netflix, unfortunately, still has to navigate these out-dated distribution channels. It's the same kind of reasoning that leads an American film to have a multi-month delay before being released in the UK despite the lack of additional overhead (subtitles, etc).

griffinmb··on Vy – A Vim-like in Python made from scratch
Atom's filesize limit is 2MB, so it's not really 'massive.' When I was using it, I ran into that limit more often than I would have expected. Mostly when taking a peak at a db dump, or misc files from the odd CTF challenge.
griffinmb··on A history of World of Warcraft's gold economy
I was able to make decent money off of the AH the summer it went live. I would buy inexpensive, low-level legendaries off the Gold AH and sell them for ~5 bucks on the RealMoney AH. I wasn't making $200 a day, but I made enough for a couple months of rent.
griffinmb··on Nextbit’s Robin Is Another Pretty Phone–But with Infinite Storage
I may be in the minority here, but even if it was ubiquitous I wouldn't want "every corner of the operating system" running through public WiFi.

The creators must be aware of these concerns. I'd be interested in hearing their thoughts on the issue.

griffinmb··on We only know about a small fraction of the matter in the Universe
I was just on a similar train of thought: Cthulhu-like monsters made of dark matter, traversing the universe. Wouldn't that be fascinating?
griffinmb··on Why $53M Wasn't Enough to Scale Good Eggs
I really liked Good Eggs, and their customer support always seemed great. Unfortunately, my last order came an item short so they gave me a $5 credit on my next order. A day or two later, they close down in NY and now I won't be able to redeem the credit.

Not a big deal, but it was a bit annoying coming from a company I'd always used specifically for their great customer service.

griffinmb··on We don’t trust drinking fountains anymore, and that’s bad for our health
The water in Greenpoint, though, is notoriously bad.

edit - Greenpoint, the neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY for any who don't know.

griffinmb··on Hacking Team hacked, attackers claim 400GB in dumped data
That's an interesting way of looking at it, though I disagree. Consider the society depicted in Brave New World (or, more recently, District 1 in the Hunger Games).

It may be fiction, but I think it showcases a true-to-life phenomenon where people feel free only because of hyper-stimulation. Because they have so much, they don't think about everything they lack.

griffinmb··on How American Fans Pirated Japanese Cartoons into Careers
I would add Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note to the list of well-dubbed content!
griffinmb··on Hard-Core Career Advice For A 13-Year-Old
To be fair, a lot of people at 18 (including me) were really sold on the idea that "nobody cares what you majored in, just that you have a degree."

My freshman year, I couldn't decide if I should major in something that 'made sense' or if I should dive into film. I decided to talk to the school guidance counselors. They encouraged me to get into film, spouted off statistics ("85% of people don't hold jobs in their major!"), and encouraged me to follow that passion.

Well, I didn't realize at the time that, yeah, maybe 85% of the population didn't get their job because of their degree, but it's because the jobs they got were service-industry.

It's definitely my fault for trusting them with that kind of decision, but I believed they were authorities on the subject. Anyway, I'm back to programming now, so I guess I'm part of the 85%.

griffinmb··on Oh My Zsh
Why do they get mad? I rather like zsh.
griffinmb··on Why Learning to Code Is So Damn Hard
If you are in a position to quit, I'd put it at 0%.
griffinmb··on Show HN: Minimal Meteor Scaffolding
Lately I've been working on Meteor projects in my spare time, so I put together this small scaffolding tool to make my life easier. If you work with a similar file structure, this could save you a few minutes for every project!

I intend on adding simple generators for routes, collections, and templates, but my main goal is to have a strong default selection of oft-used packages -- for forms, auth, routing, etc.

Let me know what kinds of things you find useful in a scaffolder, or what your go-to tools are for Meteor development!
