gregimba··on Condors or Lead Ammunition? (2015)
In regards to steel shot having less stopping power its due to the density differential between steel and lead. Generally when people say stopping power they are describing the amount of force exerted and more mass equals more force (assuming the same velocity).

Lead Free ammunition exists in various forms and the terminal ballistics can be different than lead ammunition. So many compositions are possible and this is a massive topic that is quite hotly debated and studied in the firearms community.

gregimba··on Chinese telecoms must use "AI and other technical means" to identify phone users
Traveling to Germany I had to provide my passport to get a SIM card. When I was going through customs stateside I had a photo taken with my passport. Not sure if this is the new standard but other countries are implementing the same laws/procedures and while I disagree with china we shouldn't hold them to a different standard than other nations.
gregimba··on Tesla Cybertruck
I disagree, I wish we could have fewer vehicle restrictions for a certain class a vehicles for people who accept the risks associated. A truck with bullet proof windows might be nice for people who live or drive through certain areas.
gregimba··on Tesla Cybertruck
As someone looking at a Tacoma TRD Pro or Ram Power Wagon this thing just shattered my midsize vs 2500 internal debate.
gregimba··on Show HN: Who Arms the World?
This doesn't really showcase how Arms flow for a variety of reasons including the reality that a huge portion of small arms are sold outside of official channels without being disclosed or tracked.

Do you think this sale got into the data set? https://www.npr.org/2019/02/21/696561255/heckler-koch-fined-...

gregimba··on Re-Licensing Sentry
When will there be a 10.0 Open Source Release? It's harder for me to support this when I saw open source pull requests denied that in hindsight would have let more users run their own hosted sentry with features such as OpenID Support.
gregimba··on WARP is here
> days before the April 1 planned roll out. Please don't launch actual software on April 1st.
gregimba··on America’s New Sex Bureaucracy
The standard at my college was any alcoholic consumption meant you could no longer consent. If I had a beer and had sex with my girlfriend it was considered sexual misconduct under the definition of consent the school provided.
gregimba··on 'A nightmarish mess': millions in Assam brace for loss of citizenship
The common denominator seems to be these are majority muslim groups. A religious minority is being systematically targeted in multiple places.
gregimba··on Software made me loathe my car
This is why I'm tempted to buy an older land cruiser and redo the interior instead of buying something new with a million buttons that will fail after 5 years.
gregimba··on The Real Dark Web
One thing I've noticed is as I grow older I start to choose older and more mature stable technologies. Is that a normal progression of for developers?
gregimba··on HIV Is Reported Cured in a Second Patient
Especially people who both parents died of age like my siblings. It gives you hope for a future where that won't be the outcome.
gregimba··on Apple Names Deirdre O’Brien Senior Vice President of Retail and People
My personal experience at an apple store in the pseudo tech hub that is the Domain Austin left a poor taste in my mouth. I went there to pickup a laptop expecting a relatively painless and transparent experience and was left wishing I had gone anywhere else but there. A long hour long wait with no actually apology or contact after the initial checkin left me feeling rather annoyed at the whole apple experience for the first time in my life.
gregimba··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
Borrowing the phrase from motorcycling but it rings true with bicycling as well. Ride like you are invisible and every driver is drunk and out to kill you. Assuming the worst intentions from cars on the road teaches you to slow down and be prepared to stop or swerve to avoid a collision. Wet metal and bikes don't mix, motorcyclists are taught to pull in the clutch going over train tracks and man hole covers for this very reason.
gregimba··on I have magnets implanted in my hands
In all horrible honesty is self removal with a localized anesthetic not an option? for a subdermal implant it's not as deep as one might think. Once you overcome the initial pain you should be able to remove one yourself. (this is not medical advice and I could be horribly wrong)
gregimba··on [dead]
The other aspect is you just have corporations buying assets for the use of their owners which sidesteps income tax as a whole.
gregimba··on Norway's electric cars zip to new record: almost a third of all sales
I regularly nearly exceed the load capacity of a 1/2 pickup. Some of them are road queens but some people actually use a truck for its intended purpose.
gregimba··on Ask HN: What do you use for authentication and authorization?
I'm currently building an internal Authentication service with Hydra. I have some questions about its use in production do you mind if I send you an email?
gregimba··on Ask HN: How is software development different in China and India?
Harbor was originally made by VMWare China, thats one of the few open source tools I know of.

gregimba··on Telecom Lobbyists Have Stalled 70 State-Level Bills
And some of those initiatives are horribly written by people who have no expertise whatsoever writing laws. WA is a great example of this with some of the most recent Gun Control policies would actually violate WA state's constitution.
gregimba··on Things they don’t teach you running a business by yourself
WA has a digital lawyer for traffic tickets. Its basically a SaaS app that shows up in court for you. Pay $200 upload ticket lawyer handles it and tells you what it was reduced by.
gregimba··on Slack Is Buying HipChat from Atlassian
That slack is rather depressing I think I have most channels muted.
gregimba··on The Insanity of Driving
funny enough with the advent of texting and driving its starting to shift to women being more expensive to insure. My sisters insurance for the same vehicle was surprisingly more expensive.
gregimba··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
You do realize profit is built into a 0% loan right? Its essentially an upfront interest payment for the duration of the loan.
gregimba··on Fridge 0.1
12 volt fridges used for car camping might be much more efficient than a regular fridge if you rely on solar power.
gregimba··on Apple will reportedly launch a credit card with Goldman Sachs
I used to have a final card. I wish I could have just been rolled over into this instead of having to sign up for another card.
gregimba··on A group of techies is using data skills to alter Seattle's housing affordability
The closer I get to purchasing a house the more I find myself pushing against measures like this. NIMBY exists to protect most people's largest financial asset.
gregimba··on US Electric Car Sales Report
I think you are vastly underestimating what some people use their vehicles for. Where I drove today would have totaled a Nissan Versa. Trucks and other utility vehicles have their place.
