greenpinguin··on Show HN: Postacard – Text a Photo to Send as a Postcard Anywhere on Earth for $3
What a great service!
greenpinguin··on Your license to use React.js can be revoked if you compete with Facebook
The patent rider is a liability and needs be checked by legal. In my company that alone will take months. I don't wan't to delay my project so will use Polymer.
greenpinguin··on Ask HN: What do I need to know to get started with TensorFlow?
checkout udacity, they have a bunch of machine learning courses and also give general skills and prerequisites: https://www.udacity.com/me#!/
greenpinguin··on Show HN: PicFeed
good point, I put one up now.
greenpinguin··on Show HN: PicFeed
Thanks for this! I added a preview to the background now :)
greenpinguin··on Show HN: PicFeed
yeah, it's only for twitter users - the code is open source, added the github ribbon, so you can check what it does - just reads your tweets and discards the ones without images...
greenpinguin··on Show HN: PicFeed
What if you isolate only the tweets with images from your twitter feed? I find there are a ton of great posts I would have otherwise overlooked when scanning my feed like this.

Also check it out on ProductHunt: http://www.producthunt.com/posts/picfeed

greenpinguin··on Large Scale Payments Systems and Ruby on Rails
Very nice, especially the ProtectedAccess layer. Are you guys still using flight.js on your front end?
greenpinguin··on Ask HN: I have $2k for books, training and confs. What should I spend it on?
don't waste your money on conferences, they are super expensive and the best talks will land on the internet. Unless u need them for networking - but even then you can just go to free meetups.
greenpinguin··on Ask HN: I have $2k for books, training and confs. What should I spend it on?
totally agree pluralsight is great, they've been on a spending spree and bought my two favourite sites:

codeschool.com and peepcode.com

That said, why don't you do a Nanodegree from Udacity? https://www.udacity.com/nanodegree

The founder is a Googler and they partner with allot of great companies for their courses.

Also great is https://frontendmasters.com/ for anything JavaScript

greenpinguin··on Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
I'm working on multiple ideas. haven't cracked the 1000/month yet, but have put together a common repo I use as a starting point for all my projects. It recently got featured on the Google Developers Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_7zdqz01sk&list=PL2fzhe-bAE...

greenpinguin··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
well said. I think this is such a great symbolic moment. It's so hard to come to terms with your 'otherness' when you're young. The biggest step is admitting to yourself that you're different.
greenpinguin··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
Go Tim!
greenpinguin··on For business school graduates, investment banking is out and consulting is in
not sure if this is the correct headline. finance overall is less popular but in 2008/9 most investment banks where either bought by "normal" banks or where simply allowed to convert their bank type from investment to "normal":

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley "abandon their status as investment banks" by converting themselves into "traditional bank holding companies", thereby making themselves eligible to receive billions of dollars each in emergency taxpayer-funded assistance.

greenpinguin··on Peter Thiel's Zero to One Might Be the Best Business Book I've Read
thanks for this, can't wait to dive into this book too
greenpinguin··on Ask HN: Which is harder Front end or Back end?
When I started off there was something really gratifying when doing a static web page front end. You get immediately rewarded when throwing in an img tag and setting some basic CSS (if you start from nothing, it's really nice to get visual feedback). But soon after I wanted to get into 'real' coding and got interested in TDD, and finding elegant solutions for problems be it backend or a complicated UI. If you can spark that kind of motivation I'd say your friend is good to go. I'm also working on a program that I'm basing on my experience of teaching myself how to code: http://archi2tech.com/ maybe your friend is interested ;)
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
Not democratically elected = easier to corrupt. The previous leader of the Lords OWNES his own lobbying company! Cameron suggests him as Britain's EU commissioner, and it was only then that the EU parliament had to force him to sell the stakes in it for him to be an acceptable candidate. This guy was running the house of Lords for years!!! In which democracy is that acceptable??? How is being in political power and a lobbyist for industry at the same time NOT a conflict of interest??
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
Of course Germans question the power of the car lobby! The problem in the UK is that you destroyed the diversity of your economy in the eighties! The car industry is powerful in Germany but so are many other industries! The UK has sold it's soul to finance, even reforming schools and universities for that one purpose. George Osborne himself says for the UK to prosper in the longterm the economy needs to be rediversified!
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
True, but if Barclays has 500 subsidiaries, how many will hsbc have? It was probably just cheaper to have the big office in canary wharf and keep the city office with less staff. I work close to bank station and I have never in my life seen so many banks, in the smallest spaces you get the most exotic bank branch from a bank operating in some other part of the world. And that's just on the street level - if it's not a pret it's a bank- and who knows what's in those generic skyscrapers housing 20 different companies...
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
It's not easier. They are independent nations, sort of at least. The problem is how does the money/wealth get into a tax haven in the first place? That's where the city comes in! You cannot just fly with millions in cash (still happens too) you need a way to move money there smartly to bypass the FCA & Co. Once the money has left EU jurisdiction it's too late!
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
I remember reading a study that 60% of global black trading goes through the city. Why waste time at the periphery when the core is open for all to see? Also sorting out Crown dependencies is something only the UK can do not the EU.
greenpinguin··on Tax haven in the heart of Britain (2011)
The EU is the only hope we have to balance the power of the city. What can a government of only 60 million, where one house is not even democratically elected, do against the might of world's finance system?
greenpinguin··on Ask HN: Is Your Income above Your Country's Median Income?
London based. I started off below median London income and I must say it was not pleasant. Now three years later after changing my life around I earn well above median and together with my partner our combined household income is in the top 20% of London. Having been on the other side of the spectrum I feel these inequality discussion strongly. I worked just as hard and had barely enough to get through. We need to tax wealth and not labour. Even the OECD has recommended that in it's recent reports.
greenpinguin··on Thanks, HN: You helped discover a disease and save lives
Amazing story!
