great_kraken··on Microsoft Recall is now an explorer.exe dependency
I'll just keep disabling everything I don't like insofar as it's possible. I'm focusing on pragmatism. I've used Linux on the desktop in the past, and the amount of work required to make things keep running smoothly and the amount of things I can't run natively outweigh the feel-good benefits of less data collection. It's vastly more convenient to know my computer will be working every day, and I can run whatever Windows-targeted software I want without any hassle. Whatever I need for development can be run on WSL with minimal effort as well (occasionally WSL will have minor issues, but it's infrequent and the solutions are pretty easy to find).

None of this is to insult anybody who prioritizes things differently, or anybody who feels more strongly about how much of a problem the stuff that MS does is. I just view it as one of the many things that it's easier not to worry too much about in order for things to go more smoothly.

great_kraken··on Show HN: NotesHub: cross-platform, Markdown-based note-taking app
Joplin supports editing in WYSIWYG with formatting tools and saving markdown on the backend, or swapping to the markdown editor whenever you want to edit that way.
great_kraken··on So you want to contact Brian Eno? (2000)
That was a great and touching read. Thanks for the link.

The people on the bus wouldn't be in car navigation mode of Google Maps.
great_kraken··on Legal Systems Very Different from Ours
Arrogant and offending, how? Who is it offending? How is it arrogant?

Arrogant maybe if it said "the best." But it didn't, it said "ours."

Offending maybe if it said "Shit legal systems." But it didn't, it said "Legal systems."

It isn't really reaching to make a few assumptions. On an English speaking website, owned by an American accelerator in California, with a majority of American users, is it hard to assume that "ours" means "American?"

I would say it "skwir-rul," but that might be a northeastern regional pronunciation?
great_kraken··on Mark Zuckerberg testifies before Congress
I think a certain part of the far left can engage in hate speech against those who they view as intolerant of other's cultures or lifestyles (e.g. transgendered issues), and/or those who say things which they deem offensive (e.g. pronouns, triggering, rights movements, gender identity vs biology).
great_kraken··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
> "is too extreme"

That sounds reasonable and all, but it isn't actually a scientific justification. If the nutritional theories behind a low carb diet are sound, then it would make no sense to introduce high-carb sources to mix in just to "be less extreme." Science shouldn't care about our superficial perceptions.

great_kraken··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
The other problem is they do it wrong.

One of the ones he linked limited to 20g per day, which is OK, but then increased the amount gradually to be "manageable." Uh, that's not true keto, that's Atkins half-assed keto, which is the exact book they used.

The other one limited to 30g a day, which people over at /r/keto would consider too high, as would most low-carb dieters.

Additionally, they both encourage (or, at best, don't prohibit) consumption of things which can be eaten in small amounts but still have a high GI, such as fruits and other things. It's not just about keeping the carb count below a certain number, it's about avoiding sources of glucose spikes as much as possible, too. They ignored that, and even flew in its face, which, in my opinion, invalidates the testing methodology.

great_kraken··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
Do you have a link to data saying that is the case? I've always figured that would be the case, but I have never seen a study/meta-study about it. A quick Google didn't yield much either.
great_kraken··on Automattic open sources Simplenote
Same here, I would regularly have sync issues. Sometimes I'd see it happen while I was actually in the process of writing still.
great_kraken··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
Indeed. A basic understanding of the science is all you need. However, the main narrative is that the body is a simply a black box that obeys solely the laws of thermodynamics.
great_kraken··on Taskwarrior – intelligent TODO list
I tried using Taskwarrior with sync to Mirakel last year, as a free replacement once my Todoist trial ended. The sync didn't function correctly, and notifications weren't reliable. Ended up paying for Todoist. It's a real shame, because I much prefer going with free & open source solutions whenever possible.

I'm pretty sure that usually, in the last situation with Arby's, the computer would automatically combine things that are part of a combo and apply the discount.
great_kraken··on PriceZombie is shutting down
Yeah, I guess I'd rather search myself if I'm actually considering buying a product. And most of the time, if I'm participating somewhere, I'm not actually looking for purchase advice myself, just reading, helping out, or discussing.
great_kraken··on PriceZombie is shutting down
Yeah, it's an RES feature. I never noticed that actually because I keep most features of RES turned off, including Tagging, which I believe that is under, after searching for what you said.

Awesome! The interface is great, I always found it the best option for looking into ruby source code. Wishing you guys success with your endeavors.
great_kraken··on PriceZombie is shutting down
Honestly I'm (selfishly) kind of glad that they're shutting down, as awful as that is. I browse Reddit a lot and the fact that every single time somebody posted a product, there would always be a PriceZombie bot commenting bugged me to no end.
great_kraken··on Day of Week Algorithm
Here's how it's implemented in Ruby:

  static int
  calc_wday(int year, int month, int day)
  {
      int a, y, m;
      int wday;

      a = (14 - month) / 12;
      y = year + 4800 - a;
      m = month + 12 * a - 3;
      wday = day + (153*m+2)/5 + 365*y + y/4 - y/100 + y/400 + 2;
      wday = wday % 7;
      return wday;
  }

What happened to omniref for Ruby's source code? I can't seem to navigate to it from the main site anymore, I can only find it via Google search linking into the site.
great_kraken··on Ask HN: Best ultrabook for Linux?
How are your touchpad drivers doing? On every Macbook I've used with Linux, the touchpad was terrible, because it was missing palm detection and had awkwardness when using more than one finger.
great_kraken··on The complications of nutrition science
As some words of encouragement, it gets way easier. You stop craving the stuff once you stop eating it for a while.
great_kraken··on The complications of nutrition science
It flies in the face of modern food culture, and it's a difficult decision socially. I think this drives a lot of people. That, and they're unable to remove their associations of "how normal people eat" and they feel a lust to consume sugars / complex carbohydrates again. However, the ones that don't start eating more have much better results long-term. You can't get fat again if you don't go back to eating that which got you fat in the first place.
great_kraken··on A directory of Netflix's “secret” categories
Personally, my regular mail carrier is fine, but there's a different system for parcels (this is in Brooklyn, NY) where it's always someone different. The majority of the time, they don't even get off the truck and try to deliver the item, they either just leave a 'notice left' sheet, or none at all, and mark the item as 'unable to deliver, notice left' or 'undeliverable as addressed.' Or they mark it delivered, and don't deliver it.

Then, when you schedule a redelivery, they just don't redeliver it. If you call the post office, which I have to do at a secondary line I discovered (apparently for carriers), since their main line seems to be left off the hook or turned off, they will report that they have it there, and you can pick it up if you want.

great_kraken··on Soundproofing for New York Noise
How long do they last you, on average? I've seen these before but worried about them breaking down.

I may look into getting some custom molded silicone sleep plugs in the future, I have some noise attenuating ones already for concerts and they're pretty comfortable.

great_kraken··on Soundproofing for New York Noise
Hmm, I used to sleep with a fan on back in college for the heat and I did get used to it at the time. Maybe I'll try some white noise. Thanks.
great_kraken··on Soundproofing for New York Noise
I moved to NYC a few months ago, from Long Island, and I have been experiencing morning headaches. If I look at my sleep logger app, I notice that after around 5-6 AM, my sleep quality goes way down and moves into mostly light sleep, almost no deep sleep or REM. There's definitely something to be said about how street noise affects our sleep patterns.

For me, I'll have to try using earplugs more, but the stress on my ears isn't so nice because I'm a side sleeper. I wish I could just go to bed earlier, but I work on a remote team which is half in LA, and it would be counterproductive if I wasn't able to stay up past 10-11 PM... not to mention my schedule would conflict with that of my friends and roommates.

Installed this from the AUR and tried it. Sadly I can't backspace, since it doesn't support using ^? for backspace, only ^H.
