Wow. Learning grep and sed would apparently improve this guys speed by 100000% according to these metrics.

graysonk··on Exa, a modern replacement for ls
I don't really think that minimizing user efffort was part of the Unix philosophy, but rather to have tools do one thing well and be able to become input to another program that does something else well.
graysonk··on Exa, a modern replacement for ls
This is the exact reason I have held off on fully switching to something like zsh or fish as well. I have a few thousand servers and basically the only guaranteed thing is that they will have some version of bash or at least sh installed.
graysonk··on Exa, a modern replacement for ls
That would be great. Probably about 40% of all issues in bash scripts I see is people trying to parse ls because they don't know other tools. It would be amazing if ls reigned in the features some so people learned better tools.

I used to think that RMS was crazy for essentially wgeting every site he wanted to browse locally, but now it is making a lot of sense.

Also, could you share your list? I always love finding new sites.

graysonk··on Show HN: Use Google Spreadsheet as a Database
You list Code for America, imgur, Berkeley, Stanford, and others under partners on your website. How are they using this? And do you have some links to blog posts of them talking about it or something?

Sidenote: But I don't understand why restaurant websites that I have seen are so bad. Is there a specific, prolific company that does these?

The trend of restaurants around me is to just have a single png scan of their menu and nothing else. I was talking to one owner and they were wondering why their SEO was so bad

graysonk··on Show HN: Artpip – 4k fine art for your desktop
Ah, okay you are able to print them because some are public domain. But it doesn't look like all of them are? Looking at the category that I am guessing you pulled these from (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Google_Art_Proje...), some have pretty restrictive rights.

One of your recently featured artworks (https://www.artpip.com/artwork/57a4cf0970f12152abacdf78) seems to be owned by the Van Gogh Museum and needs a license to be printed. If I wanted to order a print of that, do you have the correct license?

graysonk··on Show HN: Artpip – 4k fine art for your desktop
I was really excited for this, but it is just a wrapper for the Google Art project. I am not really sure how you got the rights to be able to sell prints of these, or why you want to charge $9.99 a month for a pro version, but good luck!

Love the article! But wow this site hurts my eyes. Yellow and red font on a black background aligned very far right?
graysonk··on Show HN: Summaread – Millions of Articles Summarized Daily
Nice site! Some of them don't work though. For example, the "Tim Cook Drops to #53 on Glassdoors List of Highest Rated CEOs" one just displays empty bullet points.

graysonk··on Linux Namespaces and Go Don't Mix
I can only speak about my own experience as an ops person, but C++ always just felt off to me for some reason. I tried to learn and use it for about 6 months and I always felt like I was so bogged down in minutia and standards.

C let's me focus on the underlying system and it is what Linux is written in, Python is quick to write and has great libraries, and Go is amazingly easy to pick up/read.

C++ always felt like it was more so a language designed for programmers who love code than something that lets me focus on what I love (systems).

> Unix sysadmin, but this kind of job is dying

I don't think this job is dying, but rather evolving. Of the Unix admins I learned under, only the ones who were also okay programmers and adapted have a great job right now. The writing is on the wall for those that can't/refuse to program. I had an interview with Facebook and they were bragging about laying off 100's of sysadmins with a machine learning model.

Also, this is anecdotal, but of my friends who are software engs only, I make more as a "Systems Engineer" or "DevOps Engineer" or whatever buzzword by knowing systems and a moderate level of programming, but it is the same skills from the 90's applied to the "cloud".

Not a lawyer, but I thought that was only applicable if you suddenly plead the 5th after originally answering questions? From what I know he has always remained silent so I don't think they could do much with that.

From the pricing page. Is this a typo or a joke I am missing?

They should hire you to write this because I read that entire about page and was still wondering what this had to do with a Linux distro. Thanks for the clarification!

Same. I am not super hip on modern web dev, but why are they calling 19 uncompressed, external JS resources and a 6k line index.html for a single page with 2 gifs on it?
