graylights··on The Cost of an ACL Injury
And if a soldier gets to a new unit and they assign him a weapon he's not familiar with? The military definitely deals with life and death stakes.

Their solution: Frequent and continuous training.

What kind of ongoing training do hospitals offer their doctors? Who trains doctors on new equipment in hospitals? (honest questions)

graylights··on One-Time Pad reinvented to make electronic copying impossible
What's involved in the handling of this glass? They claim security because heating the glass damages its structure. A fingerprint or scratch would also damage it. Is it secure because it's just so fragile that it is plain unworkable in real world conditions?

Also this article doesn't touch on whether the randomness generated is sufficiently random for cryptographic purposes. With enough error correction and an improper random distribution, it can become possible to break even OTP.

graylights··on The DDoS that almost broke the Internet
No. Currently a significant amount of latency in opening a web page is the DNS resolution (for half a dozen domains). TCP adds a lot of overhead compared to UDP.

But a case can be made that large requests should be TCP only.

graylights··on The PyCon Incident
I've seen a similar message crop up in EO training lately. But there they differentiate between "Systemic racism" and "Individual racism". I'd guess she's just parroting without understanding... I hope.
graylights··on My Amazon bestseller made me nothing
But if you look at ebooks on amazon it's getting lot more common to have serials. Shorter books, cheaper price, fast turnaround. My favorite is Wool, which has done 8 books in last 20 months and is excellent.
graylights··on Yes `yes no`
Linux will let you allocate as much memory as you want. It doesn't ever return failure based on available memory. Instead if you attempt to write to memory it will then map memory and if there is none available it will trigger the OOM killer. The kernel will attempt to kill misbehaving processes.

The 4GB limit is maximum memory that can be allocated to a process (this is configurable) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OOM_Killer

graylights··on Megaupload Is Dead. Long Live Mega
I guess you never consumed user-generated content then. Plenty of CC music is shared through file lockers. Plenty of freeware games are done through file lockers.

Here's a discussion on rpgmaker developers site about megaupload going down: http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?s=e2dfd62fff9638c7224860...

And there's hundreds of sites like that, people creating content on different platforms that need a way to share it. How do you think they share their creations?

graylights··on NoPassword
5. Your "password" is being sent via an insecure protocol.

6. Your "password" being stored in the clear via cookies on your machine.

graylights··on Turn your 404s into lost children alerts
A 404 should render as a 404 when javascript is turned off. I understand the site itself might require javascript but the 404 should be sacred bare bones.
graylights··on Steam Expands Beyond Games
My prediction for a starter app is a basic teleconference app. Steam already offers API for friends lists and authentication.
graylights··on Valve brings non-game software to Steam
Steam isn't just distribution but also offers a lot of features that could translate to apps:

  1. Cloud based saves could become file/settings syncing
  2. Steam Workshop for users to publish plugins and addons
  3. Friends/groups/IM, invite to MP game could become invite to teleconference.
  4. Authentication (OpenID)
But if my app has file associations and user isn't logged on to steam. When they double click the associated filetype will they have to login to steam before my app can open it?
graylights··on State paid $22K each for Internet routers
Most of these places don't know what the box is and when Johnny down the street comes in to fix their internet it will be replaced by a blue soho router. There will be theft and waste and probably 20% of these will be missing within a couple years.

A librarian will notice a computer missing, but an expensive router replaced with a cheap one won't even be noticed for years.

graylights··on Show HN: This up votes itself
You can see it in the url here because he wasn't trying to hide it. He could have linked to a blog post containing a hidden element that does the get (after checking if the referer is HN).
graylights··on The Humble Indie Bundle #4 (pay what you want and help charity)
50% to EFF has always been a reason to buy humble bundles for me. With SOPA I'd have probably paid more this time. I half expect EFF to be added back in, so I'll be waiting on this bundle.
