grappler··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
Since we now face a threat of large-scale de-anonymization, a reasonable countermeasure might be using AI to make one's writing style less personally identifying, in order to try and retain some pseudonymity.

grappler··on Terror on repeat: A rare look at the devastation caused by AR-15 shootings
I think the point is that if the same shooters had only more 'normal' guns available to them, they would not have been able to cause nearly as much death and injury before being stopped.
grappler··on The Cloud Computer
I'm really thinking mostly about the hardware part here, and maybe just enough layers of the stack to feel like an integrated hardware setup. Let the nerds play with whatever software they want above that.

To go ahead and dream a bit:

I'd hope for an online configurator like the one SoftIron's HyperCloud has [1] but instead of "talk to a sales rep", show a price for what you just configured, like you're configuring a macbook.

Relatedly, there should be a standard rack form factor in the size category of NUCs and Mac Minis, rather than having to go all the way to the 19 inch monster racks that medium to large businesses use. If it were nailed down to the point of being able to blind mate (just learned that term from Oxide's article here!) gear into it, that would be kind of perfect.

This all has me wondering, if I just want to play with stuff in this space as an individual homelabber who earns a tech salary and wants a nicely designed rack-mounted alternative to a mess of unorganized NUCs and cables and whatnot, what are my best options?
grappler··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
thanks, that's a good answer, and more nuanced than I'd realized things had gotten in this space
grappler··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
I recall hearing that Google and Bing have a nearly insurmountable lead in terms of raw ability to index the web, and that all other "alternative" search engines are using Google and/or Bing under the hood. Is this the case for Kagi? Or is Kagi actually maintaining and drawing upon their own independent index?
grappler··on Kubernetes Removals and Major Changes in v1.27
1.27 hasn't been released yet.

Looking back at the previous release, 1.26, for comparison, we have this post, published a few weeks before 1.26 was released:

    https://kubernetes.io/blog/2022/11/18/upcoming-changes-in-kubernetes-1-26/
The release announcement, made on the day of the 1.26 release, highlighted the new stuff:

grappler··on Hedge funds are offering to buy startups deposits stuck at Silicon Valley Bank
According to this article, 80 is the upper end of bids they're reporting; the lower end is 60 cents on the dollar.
grappler··on Texas Republican wants ISPs to block a wide range of abortion websites
wondering if you're talking about a twitter event pre-Elon (so people on the right were mad at the twitter exec) or post-Elon (so people on the left were mad at the twitter exec).

Guessing the former, since that would put the juxtaposition you're highlighting in left vs right terms...

grappler··on The Mastodon Bump Is Now a Slump
I've set up feeds that watch many of the popular instances, using score thresholds (a weighted sum of boosts, likes and replies), so that the feeds just get posts that break a previous threshold I had set (the point being to just see some of the breakout popular trending posts and links, sort of rolling my own algorithm). Every time a post appears in these feeds, I up the threshold again, to a bit under the score of that new post.

In a downward trend, I might reasonably expect that this set of feeds I've set up would go quiet, as new posts fail to hit the high water mark I had set at the peak. Instead, my experience over the past couple months has been the opposite. Breakout posts are getting scores that have kept me pushing my thresholds higher and higher. I don't know what this says about overall usage and engagement, but I think it at least suggests that in certain ways related to popular posts, it's continuing to go up and to the right.

grappler··on Mastodon Features That Twitter Should Steal (But Won’t)
Twitter should 'steal' support for ActivityPub.

That is, join the fediverse. Stop being a walled garden. That seems passé now that we have millions of people able to follow, @-mention and reply from one domain to another.

Twitter's business model is already completely chucked and will need a ground-up rethink, so we might as well build from this more modern starting point.

grappler··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
"oh yeah, I have plenty else going on. I'm the head of other innovative companies. I don't need this crap over at twitter."

At this point, twitter's goal (whether headed by Elon or someone else) should be to join the fediverse, and be accepted by other large instances for federation with them.

grappler··on Twitter will not allow free promotion of certain social media platforms
I mean ok, yes it's part of the web and there are legit reasons to link to content there but, you know, make the effort to not do that without a really good reason.
grappler··on Twitter will not allow free promotion of certain social media platforms
Not even a bit
grappler··on Twitter will not allow free promotion of certain social media platforms
Using twitter, linking to twitter, giving a twitter as your contact handle... these things are now markers of the Wrong Kind of People.

I wouldn't want to be one of those people, and I hope you wouldn't either.

grappler··on Twitter is blocking links to Mastodon
There is now no good use for twitter other than steering people off of twitter.

The fediverse is where microblogging should happen now. We should collectively turn our backs on twitter. Twitter needs to collapse into nothing.

grappler··on Twitter Is Banning Prominent Journalists Criticizing Elon Musk
The replacement for twitter is the fediverse. It has already been growing by leaps and bounds since Elon's takeover.

  https://the-federation.info/
People will say "mastodon" a lot and they're not wrong, but the relationship is that mastodon has proven itself the breakout killer app of the fediverse. Click around a bit and you'll find other types of instances like Pleroma, PeerTube, etc.

Basically it's a set of open standards (in particular ActivityPub) developed to do a decentralized version of what twitter and similar social apps do. And no lock-in to a commercial platform or app or protocol.

grappler··on SEC Charges Samuel Bankman-Fried with Defrauding Investors in FTX [pdf]
I think it just took some parts of the media a few days to sort through the noise and pick up what the most important developments actually were, and perhaps get the necessary confirmations on the meaningful developments (and lack of confirmation on the wrong ones).

It takes any profession time to correct mistakes and get the story right, but the media have the unenviable task of trying to do that very very quickly.

grappler··on FTC sues to block Microsoft’s acquisition of game giant Activision
It may not be as good a link as the one from FTC itself, but I wouldn't call a leading national newspaper "blogspam".

Here for example is a capture of techmeme, which routinely gives media reports more emphasis than a primary source.

  https://www.techmeme.com/221208/h1530
The L5 heading at the very top of that page is this link we're talking about on this thread.

This preference makes more sense I think in cases where the primary source is a company touting its own product, where a media report would be more objective. Then again, maybe you could view this instance as the FTC touting its own product too :)

grappler··on Elon Musk’s promised Twitter exposé on the Hunter Biden story is a flop
If you're a liberal who likes the idea of an electric car, and knew Musk as the Tesla guy, bringing to market sexy electric cars people actually want, and then you see him waging a culture war siding with Trump et al and going well out of his way ($billions out of his way) to dunk on liberals...

You're right, it's not going to change you from liberal to conservative. But it absolutely could change how how you feel about Elon Musk and your interest in buying a Tesla.

I'm not sure how many coal-rolling giant-pickup-driving climate-denying MAGA types would be interested in Teslas just because Elon has started pandering to them.

grappler··on The Twitter Files
The takeaway for me is that anyone who doesn't like large centralized social networks having and using this kind of influence over the dissemination of information, whether because you didn't like twitter's earlier management or because you don't like its new management by Elon, or some other reason, should be cheering the recent growth in the fediverse of decentralized social networking sites.

grappler··on Tales of the M1 GPU
I'm loving seeing the shift from embedding and linking to tweets and twitter accounts to embedding and linking to fediverse posts and profiles.
grappler··on Elon Says He’ll Make His Own Phone If Apple and Google Deplatform Twitter
Musk used to be one of the Good Ones. Reusable rockets. Electric cars.

Now he's lowered himself to be one of Those People. People who help Trump, and pander to Trump supporters.

Well, the old days were nice but they are gone.

grappler··on Elon Admits His Content Moderation Council Was Always a Sham to Keep Advertisers
fwiw, I was not editorializing when submitting the headline. I just used the headline from the post I was linking to. I know hacker news sometimes rewrites headlines and remember thinking that they might decide to do that in this case, though I see that it has so far stayed the same.
grappler··on Twitter won’t restart paid verification until ‘significant impersonations’ stop
with the rise of mastodon in the past week [1] I feel twitter is already yesterday's news. It serves no purpose. It has lost whatever cachet it had. The world of the Fediverse and ActivityPub and Mastodon and similar implementations is the final escape from walled gardens and the horses have already run out of the barn.

grappler··on Elon Musk’s Twitter Teeters on the Edge After Another 1,200 Leave
I suppose the people still there must either be Elon fanboys, or have really limited options (e.g. in the country on a work visa).

I'm imagining a big tech company suddenly run by James Damores, rather than having a minority of them scattered about.

grappler··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
I don't hope the wheels stay on. I hope they come off, as a warning to anyone in the future considering acquiring an organization with the idea that its people are a small part of its value and can be cast out or easily replaced.
