Same problem, Safari / iOS - pausing the video at the top and then scrolling seems to resolve

Edit: Nevermind, seems related to how far you scroll. Scrolling further got me past the first few paragraphs that kept jumping back. Ugh

grahamplace··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Charles Lehman was on the Ezra Klein show recently[1] and had a useful definition for disorder, re: your first point.

This may not be exactly the quote, but it was something like "Disorder is domination of public space for private purposes."

As an SF resident, that really resonated; day-to-day quality of life here (for me, at least) feels much more impacted by that type of "disorder" than "homelessness" generally (obviously we need housing solutions too)

I came across this property on my own just by zooming out the map from my location — you might make a more clear example listing like “123 Test St” with lorem ipsum in the listing description

I thought it was a mistake to leave this data in production, not an intentional example listing.

Congrats on the launch! The site looks great

grahamplace··on Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (2014)
The Star Trek story you describe sounded exactly like The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas — indeed the “References” section of the Wikipedia article mentions the Star Trek episode taking inspiration from it

grahamplace··on Plover: free, open-source stenography engine
I've always said ploh-ver (rhymes with clover), but that comes not from any birding experience, but from drinking Andytown's Snowy Plovers[1]. I believe the staff there has always said ploh-ver as well, but it's been a while and I could be mistaken.

Seems like jury is out amongst birders[2]

grahamplace··on What comes up when you flush
If your goal is to minimize pathogens transferred from seat to hand, you can think of the man's second seat manipulation as "zero cost" in the sense that their hand is already contaminated and they'll need to wash thoroughly

Man 2x, Woman 0x = 1 "contamination" cost incurred Man 1x, Woman 1x = 2 "contamination" cost incurred

grahamplace··on Show HN: CodeLink: create links to blocks of code in your IDE
This appears to be a Jetbrains equivalent to the aforementioned VSCode plugin (I haven't tried either so can't speak to feature parity):

https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/17756-copy-git-link

Edit: I just tried it, works great! Happy to have found this plugin via this post as I often open up Github just to link someone to a particular line of code I'm looking at in my IDE

grahamplace··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
Was going to post this as well — I read this in the middle of taking my vector calc class in college (with a terrible professor) and really had one of those "ohhhhhhh" moments where you unlock an intuitive understanding of something previously out of reach
grahamplace··on Replacing forks and chopsticks with pincers
Instead of designing an entirely new disposable wood form, I wonder if you could just make an attachment like "Chopstick Helpers"[1] that worked with existing disposable chopsticks but had action more akin to pincers.

That being said, I'm definitely still in the "might as well just use chopsticks then" camp

grahamplace··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
I'm not sure the exact rules here (and you might not be in the US), but you might want to avoid asking candidates "about where they are from"

> Any questions that reveal your age, race, national origin, gender, religion, marital status and sexual orientation are off-limits.

> "State and federal laws make discrimination based on certain protected categories, such as national origin, citizenship, age, marital status, disabilities, arrest and conviction record, military discharge status, race, gender, or pregnancy status, illegal.

> Any question that asks a candidate to reveal information about such topics without the question having a job related basis will violate the various state and federal discrimination laws," Lori Adelson, a labor and employment attorney and partner with law firm Arnstein & Lehr, tells Business Insider.

grahamplace··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
From the article:

> In brief, while seated with feet flat on the floor and muscles relaxed, the heel rises while the front of the foot stays put. When the heel gets to the top of its range of motion, the foot is passively released to come back down.

grahamplace··on How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing
> This is democracy in action

One challenge in YIMBY-oriented organizing is that "future residents" who would benefit most from new developments have no political power to wield in order to get them approved — because they don't live there yet — because they can't, since there is not housing for them

grahamplace··on When to use Bazel?
Worth pointing out that Build Buddy (YC W20) has an enterprise Bazel product that tries to make some of the management of Bazel easier.

I haven't used it myself so no commentary, I just have a friend who started there recently so it's on my radar
