grafs50··on Homegrown Rendering with Rust (2021)
Which console vendor is that?
grafs50··on Deriving Dependently-Typed OOP from First Principles
Interesting, I wondered what it would even mean to derive a programming paradigm.
grafs50··on I played chess against ChatGPT-4 and lost
They already can: https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.04761 (Toolformer)

There's even a zero-shot version based on prompt engineering: https://toolformerzero.com/.

grafs50··on 5G is a joke and the iPhone is the well-timed punchline
How does this work with data caps? I had to use a 4G hotspot for work for about a week and had already reached the point where I was getting throttled. Won't applications of 5G just hit this point more quickly?
grafs50··on What chords do you need?
I think the difference here is how it functions in the music. Does the chord function as a CMaj7 in relation to the rest of the song, or does it function as an Emin6?
grafs50··on Ethereum Has Issues
I think the idea is that "more capable" participants tend to make money off of "less capable" participants. And there are a lot more of the "less capable" ones.
grafs50··on Hex: A Strategy Guide
Love this game! and its game theory underpinnings.
grafs50··on Android: Freeing up 60% of storage for apps by removing parts of the app
Amazon isn't going to care about the size of the app if consumers don't care. And the majority don't probably even realize.
grafs50··on A visual proof that neural nets can compute any function
With the top comments (now) all talking about the fact that this universal approximation theorem doesn't really have much impact in the real world. I wonder, is this interesting outside of theory? Has this motivated any techniques that have created (or may create) real-world, empirical results? Could it even?
grafs50··on Genealogy of Relational Database Management Systems [pdf]
I'd love to have the ability to write a direct query plan, for the rare occasion where the query planner does something stupid. But, ya SQL is great for the majority of situations.
grafs50··on Third High Severity CVE in Log4j Is Published
I don't understand what the problem is if you don't use the code. Why does it matter to you if it gets fixed?
grafs50··on EuroBSDCon 2021
Looks like they're community sponsors. This page shows the levels: http://ghostbsd.org/sponsor
grafs50··on Music Composition with Deep Learning: A Review
I can imagine a future where AI can come up with new stylistic concepts, maybe even "predicting" how some music genre will evolves. which is certainly something I'd be interested in seeing explored. Imagine an AI that was able to come up with something remotely close to rock music after being fed 1930s-1940s blues music. It'd be pretty cool to see what it came up with after being fed music from the 2000-2010s.
grafs50··on Computers should expose their internal workings as a 6th sense
I think you know what I'm getting at though
grafs50··on Computers should expose their internal workings as a 6th sense
What we can do with EM radiation has always seemed so cool to me. It's just crazy how all this info is just flying through the air without us even noticing (without tools of course).
grafs50··on We'll be stuck in this recession for years, economists say
I have no idea how accurate economists tend to be at predicting the future of the economy. I think its fair to say that economics has done a fair job of coming up with tools to deal with economic issues as the come up, and even preventing a fair amount that we never are even aware of.
grafs50··on Potential organized fraud in ACM/IEEE computer architecture conferences
I'd imagine it was about object recognition in videos transmitted over a 5G network.
grafs50··on Dutch Scientists Find a Novel Coronavirus Early-Warning Signal
It'd be pretty cool if we had a general system in place for capturing the spread of future diseases.
grafs50··on Trading Is Hazardous to Your Wealth [pdf] (2000)
Also, the average at-home trader probably doesn't sell at a random point in time. They are probably more likely to sell after a loss.
grafs50··on Show HN: Generate a static website from any back end
Making it even more impressive for someone who is all 3 ;)
grafs50··on Foxconn’s buildings in Wisconsin are still empty, one year later
I lived in Mount Pleasant, WI from 2005 to 2015, a few miles away from the Foxconn factory. Some of these comments are honestly extremely disappointing.

* Mount Pleasant is not some backwards county where people are "country-simple" (?), most people live in urban/sububurban areas with farmland quickly being eaten up for new construction. Milwaukee is 30 minutes away. Chicago is just over an hour.

* The economy of Mount Pleasant is not dying. Where you got that from is beyound me.

grafs50··on Calculus Is Deeply Irrational
So what if it does? Unless we can accurately measure with infinite precision somehow, we can't store/retrieve an infinite amount of information.

And even if we could, is there a law of physics that would contradict? (I'm actually asking, I have no idea)

grafs50··on The function that gives AI value is the ability to make predictions
Good luck finding a Nash Equilibrium in the stock market.
