grafporno··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Fun thought experiment:

1. Release video to police (with obvious shots of driver/passenger/whatever not paying attention to the road)

2. Investigation reveals accident was caused by driver/passenger/whatever reaction

3. ????

4. Profit (PR win/rescue)

For a somewhat similar reverse case, you don't need to imagine, Betsy DeVos already has that on lock-down.
grafporno··on Google Hangouts Chat
I have no idea, but the Google Blog is weirdly unoptimized for something so public-facing/PR related. Can't find the relevant HN thread, but somebody pointed out that on another Google Blog post, the author managed to upload something like a 4000x4000px image of himself that then got displayed as something like 80x80px.

When you open up chrome dev tools, the blog post is 19.2 mb (!). And they are all like that (e.g. https://www.blog.google/topics/arts-culture/just-flick-wand-... 92.2 mb).

grafporno··on LAPD arrests man on suspicion of making deadly swatting call to Wichita police
Having seen the video, it looked more like he was trying to shield his eyes from the light the police was shining directly at him _from across the street_. I don't know why this isn't reported more accurately, they shot the guy from what looks like a good 20-30 meters away.

Yes, the algorithm may be correct, but garbage in, garbage out still applies, bcause of biases.

grafporno··on Defense of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop offers case study on how to sell snake oil
You know hay fever is an allergy, right? And that you are allergic to specific pollen? These pollen are _seasonal_. It's not suprising that your symptoms are now gone, it's very probable that the allergen is just gone (for the season). The snake-oil has done nothing.

Get a proper allergy test.

> I think that to dismiss everything that's not evidence based medicine as snake oil, like this article does, is just as bad as dismissing mainstream medicine like Goop appears to do.

I really don't think you are in a position to judge that.

grafporno··on Disneyland raised prices to shorten waits
> Average wait times at the Disneyland Resort have been on the rise over the past few years, despite efforts by the park to ease crowding by raising ticket prices on peak demand days

They raised prices because there was more demand, so they could make more money.

grafporno··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
> Only 10% of Germans are accepted to Gymnasiums followed by Universitat

I just registered to point this out: This is completely untrue and has been for decades. Just have a look at this https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiturientenquote_und_Studiena... wiki article, the table on the right should give you an idea how the development looks like, even if it's in German, the "B erechtigten, Ges." column shows the percentage of pupils that get the Abitur (the certificate that qualifies you to study at an university).

It's been pretty much half of each year of pupils for a while now.
