gqcwwjtg··on Tesla's Cybertruck is outselling almost every other EV in the US
As someone who doesn’t own a car, every single time the cyber truck shows up 50-90% of the info is about these issues. Why would you trust individuals who already bought one more than auto reviewers?
gqcwwjtg··on The Obvious-Once-You-Think-About-It Reason Why Education Cuts Fertility
Is there any state the world could be in that letting the species cease to exist would be preferable? At all?
gqcwwjtg··on Building a simple oscillator based Ising machine for research and education
Yeah but you can’t adjust coupling constants so it’s not as generically useful.
gqcwwjtg··on The Obvious-Once-You-Think-About-It Reason Why Education Cuts Fertility
Lucky you! I hope your kids are also as lucky as they age.

The point seems to be that it’s extremely risky. Your decision to have kids outweighs, in the long run, most any other moral decision you make.

gqcwwjtg··on Writes and Write-Nots
Yup, as long as you ignore this quote “If you're thinking without writing, you only think you're thinking.”
gqcwwjtg··on Microsoft fires employees who organized vigil for Palestinians killed in Gaza
There’s not really anyone to endorse that doesn’t support it.
gqcwwjtg··on Blocking code is a leaky abstraction
To build a blocking API on an asynchronous API you make a place for the result to go, start the async API, then poll on the result appearing. Right?
gqcwwjtg··on Sabotage evaluations for frontier models
You don’t need sapience for algorithms to be incentivized to do these things, you only need a minimal amount of self-awareness. If you indicate to an LLM that it wants to accomplish some goal and it’s actions influence when and how it is run in the future, a smart enough LLM would likely be deceptive to keep being run. Self preservation is a convergent instrumental goal.
gqcwwjtg··on The Shroud of Turin: History and Legends
A photo negative in a single color is not a tough concept to stumble upon if you ever carve something to be thin enough to let light through.
gqcwwjtg··on Helene Should Trigger a National Rethink of Home Insurance
No no. If we don’t get our shit together this will get WORSE. If we do get our shit together this will still happen for a long long time.
gqcwwjtg··on AGI is far from inevitable
This is silly. They article talks like we have any idea at all how efficient machine learning can be. As I remember it, the LLM boom came from transformers turning out to scale a lot better than anyone expected, so I’m not sure why something similar couldn’t happen again.
gqcwwjtg··on Just Stop Oil protesters sentenced 2years for throwing soup on Van Gogh painting
What undemocratic policy? Or do you just mean unpopular?
gqcwwjtg··on Safe Assignment
Would it evaluate the RHS? It feels like it shouldn’t, but somehow that seems weird too.
gqcwwjtg··on "Stockholm Syndrome" was invented by police to discredit a female hostage (2020)
Maybe chill out on criticizing the reaction of someone involved in such a traumatic scenario where they’re not treated well by any side. It’s not what the article is about and it’s pretty gross.
gqcwwjtg··on Man Arrested for Creating Child Porn Using AI
Deepfakes of real children aren’t mentioned here, so you know. The discussion is more general.
gqcwwjtg··on The Infinity Machine
The Shannon entropy itself actually is the issue, no matter how small the mass gets.

gqcwwjtg··on Can you tell if these images are real or generated?
10/10, but knowing one of them is AI and the other isn’t makes it so much easier. Here you can just pick the one that has more detail that doesn’t really add to the aesthetic. In the real world the question is do you think this image is AI or not?
gqcwwjtg··on Uber Is Locking Out NYC Drivers Mid-Shift to Lower Minimum Pay
Evidently it varies by region how much information about the destination is given to the drivers.
gqcwwjtg··on Detecting hallucinations in large language models using semantic entropy
That doesn’t make it right to say she’s well known for being a comedian.
gqcwwjtg··on Google avoids jury trial by sending $2.3M check to US Government
> The US opposed Google's motion to strike the jury demand in a filing last week, arguing that "the check it delivered did not actually compensate the United States for the full extent of its claimed damages" and that "the unilateral offer of payment was improperly premised on Google's insistence that such payment 'not be construed' as an admission of damages." > The government's damages expert calculated damages that were "much higher" than the amount cited by Google, the US filing said. In last week's filing, the higher damages amount sought by the government was redacted.
gqcwwjtg··on An animated introduction to Fourier series
Very cool. To nitpick: the “even-ness of the cosine” graph should probably draw lines to the Y axis instead of the X.
gqcwwjtg··on A physicist dismantles Terrence Howard's nonsensical "theory of everything"
Perfect example. Maybe that word salad in the middle means something to someone, maybe it’s even right, but it’s basically uninterpretable in an academic context.
gqcwwjtg··on Confessions from an Unpleasant Woman
Isn’t the old term “going steady” the equivalent of explicitly exclusively dating someone?

I’m not convinced a decade or so ago this was so different, but let’s say it was. If the norm is different now, then it’s unreasonable to expect dates to behave as if it isn’t. I’m not saying it’s unreasonable to ask for what you want, I just think it’s silly to feel disrespected when someone violates an expectation that’s not been communicated.

gqcwwjtg··on Confessions from an Unpleasant Woman
Maybe people try to tell you you’re misguided because it sounds like you expect a date who respects you to not date other people. This is a silly expectation to have if it isn’t communicated explicitly.
gqcwwjtg··on The hikikomori in Asia: A life within four walls
Consciousness as the word is commonly used is a descriptor of the material processes that happen in your body. It’s not clear what you’re referring to as consciousness.
gqcwwjtg··on The hikikomori in Asia: A life within four walls
As someone who identifies with the commenter you’re responding to, this kind of response can be really difficult to hear. It feels like philosophy 101 arguments against a straw man.

> The idea that the whole universe was made just so you could work and die, is born out of a feeble mindset…

Nobody was arguing that, and it baselessly assumes that the universe was made for a purpose.

> If there really is nothing to look forward to, there's no harm in giving this wildly different life-changing thing a try.

Most people make decisions based on things other than what they look forward to. Like just because I’m not looking forward to my day tomorrow doesn’t mean I should set my bed on fire, even though it would make me appreciate getting out of bed more.

As far as I can tell life doesn’t come with a meaning to be discovered.

gqcwwjtg··on U-M finds students with alphabetically lower-ranked names receive lower grades
Is that distinction worth making here? There’s no way to “assess independently” the work of each student without some amount of randomness. But I think that’s okay, because isn’t randomly distributed unfairness just… fairness?
gqcwwjtg··on Bay Area workers charged for building secret apartments inside train stations
I’m surprised they don’t put a Subway in each one.
gqcwwjtg··on AI-generated sad girl with piano performs the text of the MIT License
A lot more than this.

Elton John improvising on an oven manual is the high bar in my opinion. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8GuI4UUZrmw

gqcwwjtg··on Anakin – Automatically Kill Orphans
I can’t see how any of this could be misconstrued /s:

“Anakin uses Linux's PR_SET_CHILD_SUBREAPER feature to mark itself as the "child subreaper", which means any descendants that are orphaned get reparented to this process… then periodically polls its children and kills any that have been orphaned to it.”
