gphreak··on Meltdown Update Kernel doesnt boot
Same. RHEL/CentOS went without a hitch. The age of the kernel start’s to concern me, though.

According to the top comment in one of the posts in HN even 4.9 and 4.4 use a less ideal patch: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16085672

I can’t really judge how much RH engineers are capable of fixing that kind of stuff in a kernel that’s officially out of support upstream.

Based on the general quality of RHEL/RHV I trust them to do the right thing, but I have no insight whatsoever in how kernel development actually works.

gphreak··on Meltdown Update Kernel doesnt boot
Exactly, and use 4.14. According to a recent comment from a kernel dev both kernels use the same patch approach. 4.4 and 4.9 are using a different approach that’s less ideal, less complete and apparently less tested.
gphreak··on Meltdown and Spectre Linux kernel status
Re-reading my post it does sound a bit confusing.

What I meant is: Ubuntu LTS seems to not give a damn if the kernel they use is also an LTS release.

Examples would be: 14.04, 16.04 HWE kernels, 18.04 (currently planned to be 4.15).

gphreak··on Meltdown and Spectre Linux kernel status
Based on the remarks I'm wondering if there's a distribution out there that is similar to Ubuntu LTS but only uses LTS kernels.

I'm on CentOS right now and love it, but from what I've understand so far it would be preferable to be on a newer kernel.

I was planning to look at Ubuntu LTS and while they do have updated kernels available they seem to ignore LTS: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

Also, 18.04 will be based on 4.15 which doesn't make sense to me.

Debian stable maybe?

EDIT: I know I can install updated kernels but I'd rather stick with what a core distribution provides if possible

I'm sorry that happened to you and thanks for speaking up. The way the company treated you is beyond awful.
gphreak··on iPhone 6 and Android value
I dislike the term fanboy, but otherwise a solid addition to the post.

One could argue that what you describe is a very geeky way to approach that descision and most people won't follow the same train of thought.

gphreak··on Digital Ocean said it would shut down my blog if I didn’t edit a blog post.
The original article reminds me of the usual SUN/Bild/Fox News style which makes it really hard to defend the author in any way. In addition to that he calls names, basically gives out the address of the person in question.. ugh.
gphreak··on Reeder 2 for iOS
Reeder was near-perfect until Google Reader was shutdown. Giving a developer another 5 bucks for an updated code base that unifies iPhone and iPad versions is so worth it.

The app is by far the best RSS reader on iOS imho.

gphreak··on Why does Angular.js rock?
If you look at Google trends there is a massive spike in Angular interest: http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=angularjs%2C%20emberj...

I'm not saying this should play the biggest part in your descision, but it's worth noting. I implemented 2 small apps in both frameworks, giving me a small fixed amount of time for each. I liked both, Angular gave me less head-scratching and out-of-the-box Twitter Bootstrap integration.

gphreak··on Why does Ember.js rock?
While the cage match was fun to watch I found it pretty one-sided. Tom Dale has awesome live stage skills and was better prepared.

While Ember and Angular seem to be pretty close in terms of functionality etc, Angular has recently gained a lot of momentum judging by Google Trends, blog posts and available 3rd party libraries (http://ngmodules.org/).

This might not be important for everyone, but when I could just plugin an Angular bootstrap model and stuff worked, I was happy and chose Angular.

gphreak··on A list of front end development resources
This is not my work, I tried contacting dypsilon but couldn't find contact details to let him know he should stop by here.

EDIT: found him on twitter and contacted him

gphreak··on AngularJS versus Ember
I haven't played with EmberJS too much, but read several times that debugging can get pretty nasty (the poster mentioned something about a run-loop if I remember correctly?).

Did you encounter similar issues or do you rely mostly on unit tests for debugging?

gphreak··on Who Are the H-1Bs?
Would be interesting to compare degrees from different countries with each other, how hard it is to obtain them etc.

The bachelor degrees in Germany seem to be strongly dependend on the university and I've seen quite a few people where I didn't understand how they got through. It seems to be worse with off-shore resources, but this could be just personal experience or the fact that my company utilizes one of the big 4 off-shoring companies (my assumption would be the really skilled people would rather work for software companies or something similar)

gphreak··on Feed Wrangler - a modern, sustainable RSS reader
The author, David Smith, is not an unknown force in the iOS development community and usually releases products that feel like he cared for them and sustains them with regular updates.

He talked about FeedWrangler on his Podcast, Developing Perspective, and while I can't verify his claims that he already had started the project he really seems to be a very nice guy and a competent developer.

The reviews seem to back this up. Also, he will offer a refund in case you are not happy with the result.

gphreak··on Deutsche Telekom kills fixed line IP flatrates
Agreed, but it still hurts. Also, the upload goes down from 10mbit to 0,5, which is quite severe.
gphreak··on Deutsche Telekom kills fixed line IP flatrates
If you look at their current conditions, for Call & Surf VDSL and fiber contracts there is already a cap in place [1]. It is not enforced, though, but certainly will be in the future. Entertain contracts on the other hand do not mention this for VDSL, only fiber [2].

From my basic understanding they cannot change that, so I switched to Entertain for the next two years. I currently costs the same as my old contracts for 24 month.

They have been extremely responsive to feedback so far and always carefully explained why they are not incorporating everything the community suggested.
gphreak··on Frameworks Round 3
Go seems to have issues with the database drivers, maybe because of the 1.1 update? It was quite fast in the previous iterations of the test which used Go 1.0 afaik.

gphreak··on Why I love Ember.js
Good read, I'm a sucker for those love it/hate it posts.

Still being in the process of playing around with Ember and I really want to like it, but my mine gripe is still the documentation. Take for example the linkTo helper which I wanted to use with the Twitter Bootstrap navigation. I found a few examples on how this could be done, but no API documentation for the helper? The Ember.LinkView documentation does not really help as well.

Maybe I'm blind or just too inexperienced with Ember.Js Views, but something like that really puts me off.

gphreak··on Why Discourse uses Ember.js
You might want to have a look at http://egghead.io/ if you haven't already. John manages to explain topics in simple terms and examples, usually much easier to digest than the official documentation.
