gowthamgts12··on India protests: Internet cut to hunger-striking farmers in Delhi
you can stop arguing with him. mostly he belongs to the liberal left.
gowthamgts12··on WhatsApp loses millions of users after terms update
I just migrated one of the gaming groups that I'm part of to signal and it works well. if someone pings me on whatsapp i ask them to install signal and some people actually did.

but like others said, i still have whatsapp - i just open it rarely.

gowthamgts12··on Dns.Watch: Public DNS Servers
As others mentioned, no idea who runs this and also DNS queries are slower from Chennai, India. I'm getting 400ms and it's much higher than others (30ms for google dns and 50ms for cloudflare)

I think it's located on Germany and will be faster for people in EU region.

gowthamgts12··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage

gowthamgts12··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage
ha ha illaba ACT from Chennai.
gowthamgts12··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage
Yes sorry it's 200 Mega Bits per second.

edit: the pricing page of ACT for reference - https://www.actcorp.in/broadband/chennai/broadband-plans

gowthamgts12··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage
Yes fair usage policy
gowthamgts12··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage
> Reading this made me realized how cheap Internal data is in Viet Nam.

same here in Chennai, India. I'm currently paying 15USD including tax for a 200MBPS connection with 3.3TB FUP. I have never reached my FUP limit. provider is ACT fibernet and they are good in the business.

gowthamgts12··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
when i was looking to buy an oled tv, i never even considered samsung because of this problem. I went with lg c9. ads are there but very very minimal compared to samsung tvs.

you'll be thrilled how much data these "smart" tvs collect when you plug it to your local DNS server.

gowthamgts12··on App suddenly crashing on startup due to FBSDKRestrictiveDataFilterManager.m
tracking!!!
gowthamgts12··on DuckDuckGo browser seemingly sends domains a user visits to DDG servers
created a new issue to track this again: https://github.com/duckduckgo/Android/issues/876
gowthamgts12··on I was blackmailed – any YouTuber could be next
also applies to android developers as well. they have been struggling for a very long time due to app takedowns without human intervention.
gowthamgts12··on DigitalOcean VPC
current monthly charges are around 300eur. totally running 3 servers.
gowthamgts12··on DigitalOcean VPC
this is indeed true earlier with C2* series instances. I used to face this problem daily, since I also used NAS. They have deprecated that dedicated box series now and currently using GP1-M which is reliable now.
gowthamgts12··on DigitalOcean VPC
I'm transferring out ~5TB/day and pay no charges for it. I'm using scaleway (https://www.scaleway.com/en/pricing/)
gowthamgts12··on Infrastructure Monitoring with Prometheus at Zerodha
was reading your first blog post (https://zerodha.tech/blog/hello-world/) and amused that your tech team is only 30.
gowthamgts12··on uBlock Origin: Address first-party tracker blocking
A possible solution proposed for this problem is to do DNS checks, which is already done by PiHole. So, yes if you have the 3rd party in your filter, it will be blocked.
gowthamgts12··on 20K Workers Will Be Jobless in Indian IT Sector, Thanks to Infosys and Cognizant
This is a common stereotyping to assume. The quality of work you get from outsourcing is directly proportional to the amount you spend.

If you need talented people you have to spend more money. It's as simple as that.

gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Some people stay in jobs not only for money but for other minor stuff. They continue because they don't want to work alone, keep pushing themselves, keeping a routine, etc.
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Slack Alternatives?
Damn, I can agree with you. 35k per year is a hell lot for collaboration software.
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Slack Alternatives?
I was forced to use for a customer project around ~8months ago
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Slack Alternatives?
I have used Teams before, but it's not smooth. Had a lot of UX cramps.
gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Slack Alternatives?
flock.com? Haven't used but it will have features similar to Slack.
gowthamgts12··on Open-source apps removed from Google Play Store due to donation links
Going by your point, shouldn't Amazon be blocked since they are collecting the payment info and charging without any interference from Google? How are donation links being considered to be in violation? Just wondering!
gowthamgts12··on Explanation of the state of uBlock Origin and other blockers for Safari
Apple is making this move indeed to protect the privacy of its users more. They allow implementing content blockers rather than ad-blockers.

See the difference here: https://github.com/el1t/uBlock-Safari/issues/158#issuecommen...

gowthamgts12··on Ask HN: Looking for an Alternative to Jira
It's buggy and not production ready
gowthamgts12··on Partnering with publishers for a better journalism experience
It looks like if you're a publisher you've partner up with Mozilla for this. Isn't this becoming a little dependent on Mozilla?

Publishers are already dependent on Google and if Google wants to screw them over, they can. How is this different from that?

gowthamgts12··on India has the highest data usage per smartphone
I can vouch for this. Currently, living in Chennai and we have 1Gbps connection for 2000INR per month where as in my native you'll get 24Mbps for the same amount.
gowthamgts12··on India has the highest data usage per smartphone
While I'm happy that Jio is leading the data war, I'm little concerned about the competition (which is non-existent at this point). May be I'm paranoid, but I'm using Jio Postpaid and would never go to JioFiber to give away all my data.
