Perhaps the best short-term solution is to stop trying to convince people these products are direct replacements. Maybe school lunches for kids that don’t know any better? I have no doubt it’s only a matter of time these companies develop vegan food on par with their meat counterparts, but we need to stop acting like they’ve unlocked the secret formula.
For the rest of us, it's a bit of crap shoot depending on where you live. Some counties in our state have created sites where you can enter in your information so that when you're eligible, you'll be notified. For those of us not in those counties, we're hoping similar systems, because the alternative is very messy and will almost certainly add to the body count.
- They miss their kids
- They prefer friends and activities much closer to where they live
- Transit home gets far more complicated the later it gets, particularly when alcohol is involved
It's unbelievably annoying after a few years when you're just trying to have dinner with your wife without overhearing someone talking about raising a round at the table next to you.
Option 1: buy $1.5M SF condo, continue with the startup rat race even though you effectively won the stock option lottery.
Option 2: move back to the Midwest where many grew up, buy $350k 4bd/4bth home, retire before you hit 40, and raise your kids near family.
My point was that it was quite a stretch for the Times to equate this situation with Jan Koum's departure and this narrative around Facebook's moral dilemma. These guys stuck around for nearly a decade, which is frankly the story that should be written about given how infrequently that happens.
