gorwell··on Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act
All tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but once the fraud is exposed they must rely exclusively on force.
gorwell··on Power imbalances and sex
What would you call it when someone is obsessed with race and views skin color as paramount? Squeezing everything through that lens and making judgements on that basis.

gorwell··on Pelosi defends stock trading by lawmakers. ‘We are a free-market economy’
How many times are we going to fall for `This is the most important election of our lives!`. It's always about choosing the lesser evil. Every time. And then nothing changes.

Andrew Yang has the right idea. We need to break the duopoly by implementing Ranked-Choice Voting and Nonpartisan Primaries.

gorwell··on About Three-in-Ten U.S. Adults Are Now Religiously Unaffiliated
"Tell me you're a sinner without telling me a sinner".

This is what you're saying. I'm well aware of how puritanical religions and cults work. Heretics who speak blasphemy must be shunned for defying the approved dogma. You are the righteous, the unenlightened are the r/sinners/racists. It's nothing new.

gorwell··on George Orwell Outside the Whale
What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions."

Define `hateful` or `harmful`.

And would your definition reflect Instagram's definition, as seen in the following example?

gorwell··on Nobel Peace laureates blast tech giants and warn against rising authoritarianism
No worries, this time it's the good guys who want to censor you. We'd never abuse such power. We're just saving you from the bad guys. Pinky swear.
gorwell··on Blizzard executive asks employees to “consider the consequences” of union card
Twitter in a nutshell; outrage-based misinformation.
gorwell··on Blizzard executive asks employees to “consider the consequences” of union card
Same.

It's great. Most game companies are very comfortable. Nice offices with free food, good pay, flexible hours, remote friendly, full benefits. Crunch is rare these days. This is all true of Blizzard, btw.

The vocal minority on twitter are trading in outrage; the currency of social media. And there's a distinct lack of perspective. Have they ever worked on a farm? A restaurant kitchen? A construction site? A warehouse? Or anywhere outside of an Aeron chair? Mostly no. This doesn't mean it's perfect or can't be improved, but it's really nice compared to most and this gets lost in the noise. I often visit poor neighborhoods and poor countries and read history and thank my lucky stars.

And yes, you can get even better pay in the financial services industry. If that's what you want, please, go work there. No one's stopping you.

gorwell··on Why is America so divided?
That's because they are both correct. The ruling class uses identity politics to divide, and the ruling class isn't limited to one party.
gorwell··on Twitter suspends account tracking Maxwell trial
@jack was oft accused of abandoning the people and twitter's free speech principles, but with the changes we've seen since he stepped down, it now appears he was the only thing standing between dissident voices (including citizen journalism) and the ruling class establishment.
gorwell··on Twitter suspends account tracking Maxwell trial
You're projecting your own conspiracy thinking. You're literally seeking hidden, dark meaning in things that are benign (the word `patriot` in this case). That's more revealing than anything.
gorwell··on An alarming trend in K-12 math education: a guest post and an open letter
They could handle that by providing a simple solution: Randomize names.

This isn't about avoiding stereotypes though. This is about pushing a belief system and an agenda. A dangerously misguided one at that. Equity is about equal outcomes. Which you can only get through force because people have different preferences, different abilities and make different choices. Choices necessarily lead to different outcomes.

Equality and equality of opportunity, yes, please. Equity, absolutely not.

gorwell··on An alarming trend in K-12 math education: a guest post and an open letter
That's also about not calling attention to its cult-like characteristics. DIE is a little too on the nose for a group that demands conformity and unpersons those that dissent.
gorwell··on An alarming trend in K-12 math education: a guest post and an open letter
What do they say when confronted with the fact that Asians are the top performers in this system?
gorwell··on An alarming trend in K-12 math education: a guest post and an open letter
Read Chapter 2: Teaching for Equity and Engagement

https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/documents/mathfwchapter2.doc...

Why are they integrating and layering the religion of social justice and gender ideology onto math? I would be just as alarmed if Christianity or any other religion or dogma or ideology was embedded with math and how it's taught. This document is pushing evangelical-level indoctrination and is certainly less about teaching math than our current system. At the very least it's orthogonal to learning how to add and subtract.

"Teach Toward Social Justice"

"Teachers can take a justice-oriented perspective at any grade level, K–12"

"teachers need to work consciously to counter racialized or gendered ideas"

"Students are able to take what they noticed and named – in this case, how gender played out in the problem"

"Learning is not just a matter of gaining new knowledge—it is also about a change in identity. As teachers introduce mathematics to students, they are helping them shape their identity as people"

gorwell··on Expanding our private information policy to include media
A former NYT tech reporter is calling it the `Andy Ngo law`.

https://twitter.com/NellieBowles/status/1465724183044841473

It does seem crafted to gatekeep citizen journalists who are a major thorn in the corporate media's official narrative.

gorwell··on Expanding our private information policy to include media
Indeed, `Twitter Safety` is explicit about their bias.

`Feeling safe on Twitter is different for everyone` and `The misuse of private media can affect everyone, but can have a disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities.`

gorwell··on Experts from a world that no longer exists
There was an amusing example of this yesterday with The Economist saying, `The sharp increase in inflation over the past year has blindsided many economists. Almost no one saw it coming`

gorwell··on Tech journalism is less diverse than tech (2020)
It's also a large amount of psychological projection and intra elite jockeying.

Naval hit the nail on the head here: `The whole Social Justice Warrior-ing trend seems like a case of white-on-white violence.`

gorwell··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
I'm surprised you're getting downvoted. I thought HN was well aware of Noam Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent. Maybe not?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_Consent

See also Revolt of the Public, which explores the consequences of the internet breaking monopoly control over the flow of information. As you point out, it's the alternative channel that gave rise to unauthorized voices. What we're seeing play out is a fight between the dissenting public and the ruling elites. Removing dislikes is just the latest in a series of moves to reassert control over information.

gorwell··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
This is another example of how the ruling class is trying to reassert control over the narrative and flow of information.

Flag dissent as `misinformation`, remove comments, remove dislikes. Bit by bit, clamping down on the ability for the public to revolt.

gorwell··on NoFILTER – free speech blogging app and content on IPFS
Oh please. Usenet was a free speech platform. IRC was a free speech platform. The 90s internet was a free speech ecosystem and the prevailing ethos was anti censorship. And guess what? It wasn't an endless hellscape. It was great, mostly.

We're just caught up in the middle of a moral panic and the church ladies from SNL have come out of the woodwork, flapping their arms about how everything is s/satanic/racist.

gorwell··on How Industry Weaponizes Science and Sows Doubt to Serve Their Agenda

gorwell··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
The people who preach the loudest often do so to overshout their own past. It’s no coincidence that the loudest proponents of cancel culture have a history of bigotry, racism and bullying. Today, this the most effective way to bully someone.

Most recently this was seen with the organizer of the Netflix walkout, who has a history of racist tweets, primarily anti Asian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7wMZ_R_anw

gorwell··on Stop spending so much time being trolled by billionaire corps
Exactly, that's why the corporate media is so threatened by this average Joe.
gorwell··on Stop spending so much time being trolled by billionaire corps
Huh? Does Rogan run a shop selling trinkets and snake oil?

He's a comedian chatting with people and sharing the discussion that you can choose to watch or not. The controversy around him is largely manufactured by a dying corporate media and ruling class threatened by unsanctioned voices. Speaking of being trolled by billionaires...

gorwell··on The Patriot Act Has Threatened Freedom for 20 Years
The Patriot Act was when I realized you can't judge a bill by its name.
gorwell··on Black and Latino students did worse in schools with ‘diversity officers’: study
It helps to remember that every time you see a giant multinational corporation promoting diversity that they are talking about other rich people who think just like they do and are working to protect the status quo, but who have a few cosmetic differences that magically insulate their oligarchic activities from public critique.

The poor and working class are already quite diverse.

gorwell··on Facebook Faces a Public Relations Crisis. What About a Legal One?
Right. What the ruling class wants is `free speech` being restored to what it was before the days of the Internet. When you could say anything you liked but it never got amplified because the bourgeoisie controlled whose speech got to reach the masses. They had a monopoly over the flow of information.

Now we have the facebook `whistleblower` in Britain this week with her scripted performance calling for more state control over online speech. The ruling class want the power of free speech contained and the dominance of the traditional bourgeois fully restored.

The book `Revolt of the Public` goes into this in detail and it explains much of the upheaval we're seeing. I highly recommend it.
