gorwell··on Kickstarter Union voted 97.6% to ratify one of the first tech union contracts
Kickstarter may survive since they enjoy near monopoly status, but otherwise how can they compete given that high performers in tech are allergic to unions?
gorwell··on Despite crypto layoffs, Kraken continues to hire
It's the same kind of person. The difference is that your boss correctly identified himself. The activists in question are the same, but misidentify themselves, hiding under a false label. They are wolves in sheep's clothing.

I also made the mistake thinking they were sheep at first. They talk all about diversity and inclusion and tolerance, but in practice it's precisely the opposite.

gorwell··on Despite crypto layoffs, Kraken continues to hire
You must not have experienced this brand of activists yet. They are toxic to the entire team and organization in which they are present. They sow division, intolerance, hatred, bigotry and exclusion unlike anything I've seen in decades of work experience.
gorwell··on Despite crypto layoffs, Kraken continues to hire
That's not what he said.

The people who preach the loudest often do so to overshout their own past. It’s no coincidence that the loudest proponents of cancel culture and DEI have themselves a history of bigotry and bullying. Today this is the most effective way to bully or marginalize someone.
gorwell··on Minnesota Wants to Ban Under-18s from User-Generated Content Services
It may or may not be pandering. The cultural and corporate elites have been increasingly exercising control over speech on the internet the past few years, and now we have a Ministry of Truth in the government.

More top down control is the natural progression of what we're already seeing.

This is straight out of Brave New World where the word "mother" was viewed as obscene.

gorwell··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
The "woke" all have the same opinions and aggressively attack any deviation. It acts like a parasite or virus that contains a payload of dogma replicating itself from host to host. It turns rational people into zombies, so mind virus describes it very well. Challenges to the dogma are considered dangerous as it threatens the ability for the virus to spread.

You're right that the virus could be a different variant, like the anti-woke variant, and it'd be a problem too if it parasitized as many brains.

gorwell··on Why Not Signal?
What could Signal do to prove they aren't a honeypot?

I have no idea if they are or not, but it'd be a disaster if they are. Or maybe not. I suppose people might just shrug it off like the NSA. sigh.

gorwell··on The singularity is close?
Yudkowsky doesn't strike me as a crank. Why do you say that?
gorwell··on The singularity is close?
We may be close, but I don't think we'll get closer because we're trending in the other direction now. We're in decline and I'm more worried about technological regression than tech getting too powerful at this point.

They invoked the Emergencies Act to bypass due process.

`When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided a week ago to invoke his country’s Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history to quell the unrest, it gave the police sweeping new powers to go after the finances of the protesters.`

As for the US, I agree they belong on the list because of civil asset forfeiture.

gorwell··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Consider yourself lucky. You don't live in places like Russia, China or Canada, where your credit cards and bank account can be frozen or even confiscated without due process. For some living under these regimes, crypto is the only wealth they've been able to retain.

gorwell··on Convoy Crackdown – power to freeze bank accounts without trial or legal recourse
From the Canadian Civil Liberties Association:

Let's be clear: there is no legal justification for using the emergencies act.

The broad powers the government has granted to police curtail Charter rights across the country.

This risk of abuse is high.

The emergency declaration should be immediately revoked.

gorwell··on Convoy Crackdown – power to freeze bank accounts without trial or legal recourse
If anyone is not terrified by the precedent being set here, then they haven't yet imagined it in the hands of their political opponents.
gorwell··on I was wrong, we need crypto
One idiot or provocateur in a sea of tens of thousands does not override the 99%. That's an absurd, lazy smear.

What this episode makes clear is that many people actually love authoritarianism as long as the actions of the state in the moment appear to align with their own ideology. Next time it won't, which is why it must be resisted on a principled basis. This precedent being set is a dictator's dream come true and you will have no leg to stand on as someone that cheered on the tools of oppression.

gorwell··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
Does it?

To a neutral observer the BLM protests were overwhelmingly peaceful and represent the administrative class.

To a neutral observer the trucker protests were overwhelmingly peaceful and represent the working class.

gorwell··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
> The question though, are these protests really what he has called them? Are they really a military occupation?

Definitely not. Every large scale protest has its provocateurs and outliers. Using the outliers to frame the 99% is dishonest to say the least.

To any neutral observer they are overwhelmingly peaceful and represent the working class.

gorwell··on Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act
You're being mislead by corporate and party line propaganda.

Over 1.6 million people tweeted about the Canadian trucker protests over the country’s vaccine mandates, reaching about 330 million users. Of the top 100 most retweeted tweets on the topic, 79% were in support of the protests.

gorwell··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
I hadn't thought about it that way, but it certainly would explain his actions. You don't compromise with nazis. If you're convinced that's what they are.

This would explain a lot about Trump too. He was in a misinformation bubble as well.

Which means even world leaders aren't immune to this tribal trap.

gorwell··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
When you hear the word `misinformation`, you can generally substitute with `wrongthink`. It makes much more sense that way.
gorwell··on Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act
This is the real danger of the administrative state. Arresting you requires actual police officers to go out and physically do the act of arresting you.

The bureaucratic state can freeze your bank account, revoke your license, and shut down your life, all remotely.

And now they've set precedent for future protests. I don't know how anyone who considers themselves a liberal or Leftist can support this.
