A bad trackpad really renders any laptop useless IMO.
gopher2000··on StarFighter 16-Inch
Ah that's different then. I'm wrong.

Yeah it's wild to me that they'd consider going with some first gen startup solution for what is ultimately their most important professional device. And it's starting at $2k so it's not like it's insanely cheap either.
gopher2000··on Ask HN: Who is using OpenClaw?

gopher2000··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
> you weren't in a short car, you were in a normal car

What's normal can change. Today, 37% of used registrations in the US are sedans and about 18% of new registrations.

gopher2000··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Have a truck with a light bar. But it's for offroad use only. I'd never drive with it on regular roads with traffic around me.

> It's a deceptive way to sell people less game.

That's a dumb take. The buying phase is an integral part of the game mode. And the game is free.

gopher2000··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Would be interested in hearing more about (and maybe joining) the manager peer group if that's a possibility.
gopher2000··on Geocities Backgrounds
Is there a way to dig up old GeoCities pages? My only thought is to remember the URL and get it from internet archive but I can't remember my 4 digit number. I think I was in the "Baja" area.
gopher2000··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
Smart glasses will have the potential to cover more use cases than a smart phone ever did due to the potential of AR-enabled viewing display.
gopher2000··on In a high-stress work environment, prioritize relationships
Everyone: "Other people are so bad at what they do. Not me though"
gopher2000··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
Lol record high stock price, fiercest competitor banned, and cutting 5% of under performers. They're thriving from a business vitality perspective.
gopher2000··on Tinfoil.com – Dedicated to the preservation of early recorded sounds
It's been a hot minute since I saw the "real" logo and RAM files.
gopher2000··on I quit Google to work for myself (2018)
Most large tech companies require the manager to write some sort of a promo packet to be reviewed by a relevant committee. But it's not a mystery and ultimately it falls on the manager to put together a strong packet that makes it clear why the candidate should be promoted. The promotion attempt itself is the manager's vote. Beyond that it comes down to how strongly they champion for the candidate's promotion. It's the only way to ensure some consistency between promotions, IMO.

Historically successful.
gopher2000··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
Let me rephrase: Cyclists are maniacs at a much higher % than drivers. I say this with no data.

> it is interesting that bicycles make it so much safer to be a pedestrian

How is this surprising at all?

gopher2000··on Ryanair wins screen scraping case against Booking.com in US court ruling
Do they buy-and-resell or do they just provide a front for the ticket-buying flow with their own fees added on top?
gopher2000··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
Let me generalize on your behalf: Cyclists are maniacs. They want to be given the equal respect of cars in traffic but absolutely don't follow the same rules.
gopher2000··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
The general "not paying attention" is hard to prove.
gopher2000··on Why AI Infrastructure Startups Are Insanely Hard to Build
Many people clearly love them and have found great utility using them. Not sure what point you're trying to make - that you're different?
gopher2000··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
You said 1 or 2 people who aren't executives. There's way more than 1-2 E7s at Meta, as an example.
gopher2000··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
See levels.fyi. The pay levels for FAANG companies are fairly accurate. But you'd have to be something like L7/E7 level at a Meta/Google to break $1M.

Also note that some comp numbers get heavily inflated by people incorporating stock value increasing between the equity was first issued and the stock actually vested.

gopher2000··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
The argument that a startup could be the next FAANG is anchored in lottery-like odds.
gopher2000··on Tesla to lay off more than 10% of its staff
I won't buy a Tesla due to Elon's antics.

But it's not some attempt to punish him. It's because I don't trust him to be a stable long term owner of the company that is building and servicing my car.

I could see myself buying a Chinese EV.

How does that make me a hypocrite?

gopher2000··on Tesla to lay off more than 10% of its staff
For me it's not about bankrolling Elon. It's about not wanting to sink a ton of money and become critically dependent on something that is built and serviced by visibly erratic ownership. If Elon was making toasters I wouldn't care. But we're talking about a $50k+ purchase and my only means of transportation for years to come.
gopher2000··on Stable Diffusion 3: Research Paper
Because first impressions matter. See the current perception of Gemini and its "woke parameters".
gopher2000··on Ask HN: Slow thinkers, how do you compensate for your lack of quick-wittedness?
> if I try to translate that mental model on-the-fly into an explanation for others, it typically comes out as an incoherent jumble of loosely related phrases

In software engineering, I've found that this is very common. And if I look at what successful senior engineers have in common, it's that they've mastered a way to present complex technical information in a way that's easily understood. It's a super power.

gopher2000··on Ask HN: Slow thinkers, how do you compensate for your lack of quick-wittedness?
It's a fair point but I'd caution that making the "smallest possible good decision" really needs emphasis on good and not smallest or this results in just delaying. And there's a ton of people that cause delays. Especially in the corporate world.
