googlryas··on 21st-century editors should keep their hands off of 20th-century books
Kids eventually need to understand those things, and maybe once they're old enough it could make sense to buy a 20th century edition and try to spot the differences and figure out why they were changed. But before that can happen, kids need to understand the basics first. If I'm teaching someone how to play chess, I'm not going to introduce an en passant until they've established they understand the more common ways in which a pawn moves.

Is there any indication that children who were read those stories from hundreds of years ago ended up kind, caring, mentally resilient, etc...with whatever traits parents want to instill in their children today?

googlryas··on 21st-century editors should keep their hands off of 20th-century books
Children don't need "historical honesty". They need simple tales that help them understand the world around them and spark their imagination. No one is saying to burn all 20th century prints of Dahl books, but I don't really understand why the stories can't be tweaked a little to more aligned with the world we live in now.

I can't find much reason to alter Agatha Christie or Ian Fleming though, since those books are intended for adults.

googlryas··on The military is using e-girls to recruit Gen Z into service
I never said it was a lollipop guild. I was pushing back against the implication that "in the military = killing people", as if it is a rite of passage or something. And no, the military actually isn't about killing people, it is merely about the threat of being able to kill people. Probably the best military in the world would be one so powerful that no one would even try to battle it.
googlryas··on ‘The Force has left Lucasfilm’: how Disney can salvage its $4B investment
Yes, of the 5 modern star wars movies, Solo "only" made $213M. The other 4 made over $500M each.

And Solo lost money because they claimed it was ludicrously expensive. $213M is a solid amount for 99% of movies. Anyways, was it actually that expensive, or is it just Hollywood accounting?

googlryas··on Life Is So Terrible and Beautiful at the Same Time
> With some empathy you can often tell.

This doesn't sound like empathy - it sounds like stereotyping. Instead of getting to know someone and finding out about them, or accepting that you just don't know details about their life, you develop a story of their life in head based on nothing but your gut feeling.

> Also don't need to know anything to know that 70+ year olds don't work at some menial service industry job in countries where they can afford to retire.

Is Sweden one of those countries where people can afford to retire? Because they have about the same rate of 75+ year olds working as the US.

She-hulk is a comedy series on a streaming-only platform.

Their Star Wars movies consistently make >$500M, and that says nothing of the merchandising, amusement parks, and other tie-ins.

I think they're going to be okay.

googlryas··on France plans to close tax loophole benefiting Airbnb
Every year, Paris and large parts of France empty out ~July 15-Aug 15, which overlaps nicely with the Olympics. A ton of French people, who would be going on vacation anyway, will have their vacation paid for by people coming in for the Olympics.

On the Front Range, where most people live in Colorado (~Denver + north and south 60 miles), the air quality can actually get pretty bad due to inversion, and this has been noted since pre-statehood. We also are lucky enough to get a lot of wild fire smoke from California, Canada, the PNW, as well as our own home sourced wildfires. Maybe 2 years ago it felt like the whole summer was smoky, and we had stretches where the AQI was 500+ here in Boulder.

1WTC and all the other buildings are pretty bright at night. I assume if they were physically masked out, the camera would have better chance to pick up some light reflected off the atmosphere
googlryas··on The military is using e-girls to recruit Gen Z into service
Most people in the military never kill anyone. In fact, most people in the army are never even in the opportunity to look at someone who they may need to kill. You're probably far more likely to be on a humanitarian mission helping out people in need than you are to be firing a gun or dropping a bomb on someone.

googlryas··on Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
I read it as the screen maintains the last contents written and generally operates with low power requirements while screen content is not being written. Per the data sheet, to have the screen in a state where it gets all of its pixels written once every 30 seconds, it consumes 135μW of power.
googlryas··on Building telescopes on the Moon could transform astronomy
Some astronomers have voiced their concerns. Others have voiced their lack of concern. It's not an open and shut issue, but I do suspect a lot of hubbub is about who is launching the satellites, not the fact that they are there.

I think importantly, the slave-like people in eg Qatar are not Qataris, they're Filipinos, Indians, Bangladeshis, etc.

But, one wonders why a very rich society would need to resort to enslaving people in order to save a buck.

Fiji water tastes better than tap water almost always. Yes, I've done a blind taste test in before.

No, it doesn't mean it's worth shipping water from an island across the ocean. In any case, my favorite water of all time is "El dorado springs", which happens to be sourced very close to me here in boulder, co.

I've never heard "body shaming is bad unless you're body shaming a body shamer".

It misses the point in that there is collateral damage for body shaming as well - if you mock trump's weight because he is a bad person, you're still implying "fat=bad" to every good fat person out there too.

So am I allowed to mock those liberals physical qualities now, since they mocked trump for mocking someone's physical qualities? If they don't want to be mocked they shouldn't do the same to others.

googlryas··on Ethically Sourced Lena Picture
I love how mostly liberal(and good) viewpoints about the badness of body shaming go out the window when it comes to their enemies. Whether it was about his weight, or penis or hand size. Heck, there was even a popular statue made of a nude trump with a micropenis which people were lining up to have their picture taken with.

I think an important distinction is that not all homeless are problematic, but the homeless you see are almost always problematic - in the sense of having an untreated severe mental health issues including drug addiction.

You never notice the single mom living in a shelter, who takes her kids to work at a laundromat, or the guy who sleeps in his car and does landscaping jobs during the day.
