For those who don't know who we are, Alteryx is a data analytics tool, used by hundreds of thousands of raving users across the world. Our goal is to empower the citizen data scientist (e.g. non technical individuals) to solve their data challenges. Huge gains in productivity through process automation is a common outcome.

We're public, have large cash reserves, high NPS scores, and have been in business for 15+ years.

We're aggressively building out our next generation analytics platform. Big opportunity to do some really cool work.

goofygrin··on Show HN: TryCatch – Get offers only with your desired salary
As a hiring manager here's my concerns/issues with the current process of hiring/using a recruiter

- recruiters don't screen well enough technically or personality wise

- recruiters tend to lie about everything (candidate availability, salary requirements, etc)

- recruiters are hellaciously expensive

- you still have to do the full process for everyone that needs to be interviewed (regardless of source. Skipping steps has always resulted in a bad hire in my experience)

- resumes/profiles suck for determining coding ability. Sparsely filled github accounts and pet projects are far better indicators

As a person being hired here's my issues:

- recruiters lie (about opportunities, salary, etc). Notice a trend here?

- companies are cagey about salary. I'd rather know up front rather than waste everyone's time.

- lack of exposure to the team during the hiring process. Since I'll be spending more time with them than my family I want them to be people I like rather than neckbeards that aren't personable.

goofygrin··on Next Week's Bloodbath At IBM Won't Fix The Real Problem
I'm seeing an increasing trend in business users having budget and spending it without it anywhere in the conversation. Especially with the rise of SaaS where the cost is easily buried on an expense report...
goofygrin··on The problem with Angular
I think you meant Ember. I've seen the same thing done a bunch of different ways in Angular. They all work. That being said, my team has come up with a way to develop Angular apps. It looks little like the samples and people new to our world have to unlearn and relearn some things, but it gives us more agility and makes our code work better/simpler.
goofygrin··on The problem with Angular
Enterprise developer here (well mostly). I see this in most of our apps -- the same "template" is called hundreds of times in a session. An accountant auditing invoices is a perfect example.

Now for random public website? Depends on the content. In the blogs I've administered, I feel that the first page rendering speed is KEY to keeping traffic (ie static cache the html). However, new visitors, when given a quick way to get to new articles with a minimal amount of friction, tend to stay on the site longer.

goofygrin··on The problem with Angular
I've done this. I've done Angular. I've done Ajax calls to templates on the client side. I've done Knockout.

Give me client side data binding (2 way!) any day of the week vs sending the partial back from the server side. You invariably end up with a bunch of shitty glue code that's dealing with the actions AND the display.

Using a framework (Angular, Ember, KO, Backbone) all allow you to separate this spaghetti nightmare into manageable chunks.

goofygrin··on Ask HN: Would a .Net back-end put off potential acquisitors?
We're .net devs, not looking to get acquired right now, but most of our stuff is migrating to angular on top of web API (with breezejs) so our hiring has been for the JavaScript side since we already have enough .net to deal with the very thin c# layer that exists with that stack.

Personally get to market fast, fast, fast. Between dreaming and loss of velocity meaning stalling... You just need to keep constantly moving forward.

goofygrin··on What was your best passive income in 2014?
Sold some Microsoft office365 to a handful of clients. Averaging 1200/month.
goofygrin··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Office 365 is a good alternative if you use Windows.
goofygrin··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
The wife approval factor of Windows software is zero. This won't fly in the living room.

I want this on a set top box... And anything like yamj or xbmc absolutely chokes on my collection and I spend hours fixing incorrectly identified files.

goofygrin··on Orders projected to begin shipping 4/21
This is exactly my plan and need as well. 7pm and no dinner plans? Instead of take out... Have a soylent.
goofygrin··on Tesla Motors plans to debut cheaper car in early 2015 (2013)
This wasn't news in 2013... Thus has been known for years (and why I have a focus electric until the end of 2015 - I'm waiting for the model e.
goofygrin··on Why I killed my standing desk
They make small pedallers that sit on an a frame and you sit in a chair to pedal. If you ever have to do leg rehab you'll get to use one.
goofygrin··on Why I killed my standing desk
Zero drop shoes (altra for my front feet specifically) and Vibram five fingers cured my shin splints. As soon as I switched I went from one mile = deadly pain to 3 miles feeling like an easy walk. Obviously I have some mechanical issue but if a funny looking pair of shoes works... Well great =)
goofygrin··on By The Time You Give Them a Raise, They’re Already Out The Door
I think a harder thing is making the decision to cut someone if they aren't making the cut. A lot of times it's like a bad girlfriend. The thought of being alone is worse than the pain you're going through... Especially if it's early and everyone is drinking from the proverbial fire hose.
goofygrin··on Ask HN: How do I add $100k to my 2014 income?
Short term cash = consulting... But it's like heroin and hard to quit. It also has no long term value.
goofygrin··on Microsoft Reports Record Revenue of $24.52 Billion in Second Quarter
Can't sell windows server licenses if you let people run on Linux.

Xamarins price is way too high and I bet apple would block the apps built with it if msft bought them (and they'd likely sue for reverse engineering).

goofygrin··on Microsoft Reports Record Revenue of $24.52 Billion in Second Quarter
I've had a mbp for my last two laptops and I'm done with them as well. Finder, iTunes, the horrorshow that is xcode slay me. My rmbp has been crash happy and refuses to sleep (buggy video drivers). The wireless card has been awful (stops working). And for a business user support for hardware failures is laughable (2 week Depot!)

The only compelling app has been cord. It far and away is a better remote desktop client. Well that and having a real shell.

I've been buying dell latitudes as of late for my devs and they've been awesome. Windows 8 is patently terrible though.

goofygrin··on What Hard Drive Should I Buy?
Seagate Barracuda Green (ST1500DL003) 1.5TB 51 0.8 120.0%

I've got one sitting on my desk that seagate sent me as a RMA return. Guess it won't be going back into our RAID.

goofygrin··on Building an open source Nest
Probably a dumb question but it seems as if the thermostat is dumb. Ie all it is is an interface to the hardware.

If your Internet/wifi is spotty (very common)... Does your thermostat not work? Are you stuck being hot or cold?

goofygrin··on New Car Pricing Data From Offers On CarWoo
I've actually had an idea for something like this for a number of years (I used to work for ClickMotive) but it's so very hard to gather this data.

The use cases that lead to my thought were: - what cars on the market, both new and used in the last 4 years, offer a 3rd row of seating? - what cars offer a big enough back seat for two rear facing car seats and a twin stroller? (far fewer than you'd believe)

goofygrin··on How My Startup Raised $1.1 Million From a Single Cold Email
Agreed. The thing I took most from your article was where you mentioned the email was fairly concise, not long winded to end up with a "ugh, a book, deeelete" response.

Since I worked from a BlackBerry for so long, I find that emails that are about the length of these 3 messages (individually, not combined) is about as much as you can expect people to really read... more than that deserves a phone call most of the time.

goofygrin··on How My Startup Raised $1.1 Million From a Single Cold Email
<queue 1million spam emails to Mark Cuban>

I've had some startup clients do this and it's not worked out well for them (of course, we're in Dallas, not SV, so the response/pace of business is different).

I think a lot of this sort of thing works "once in a blue moon" rather than "do this as a formula" as your email simply happened into someone's email box when they either felt that need and/or were receptive to something new.

goofygrin··on We Let Our Employee Set Their Own Salaries
This is retarded.

The owner has employees. Not partners. He is carrying all the risk. Slow pay? He pays. Personal guarantee needed? His house is on the line. Needs cash to hire the next employee or to float more payroll while the work ramps up? Ya its his cash.

He's effectively made everyone an equal partner with unequal risks and responsibilities.

goofygrin··on The one HR benefit every startup should add
I don't remember the actual number, but it's laughably low (maybe $10-20/employee, frankly it was a number of months ago).
goofygrin··on The one HR benefit every startup should add
We actually put Ltd in place this year. For our company (11 employees, almost everyone in their 30s) it added like $10 a month to our policy. We also pay 100 percent of the health care and it's our #1 expense after labor.
goofygrin··on Selling Software To Large Businesses
The biggest fear of selling to BFEs (too many multiple use acronyms here)... is actually just getting our foot in the door.

We hired a dedicated sales person recently and his ability to close far surpasses ours... really it's just a matter of him digging in and getting to the right person (basically what this article says).

goofygrin··on Now Supporting Microsoft Azure and SQL Server
SQL Azure != SQL Server running in my clients network.

Say I've got a medical or heavy industrial client. They're not going to be very likely to push their production databases (or even snapshots frankly) into the cloud simply for this product (honestly they all have zero desire to push their data into the cloud as the majority of them have heavily invested in infrastructure over the last decades -- it's simply not an option at this time for them).

goofygrin··on Now Supporting Microsoft Azure and SQL Server
None of my clients have publicly accessible SQL servers (all behind firewalls). This product would be great for them... but it looks like you want them to open their db up to the world?
goofygrin··on Ask HN: Switching Jobs
Some people -- myself included -- think TDD is not a good way to develop software. And I use SVN and TFS... I've tried git and frankly I want to solve problems, not introduce more with my source control provider. I want something that "just works" and git just isn't it (and repeated branching/merging has NEVER worked well in the long run IMO).

CI... all for it, must have IMO.

Remember, just because you think how you do your job is the "only way" you're not always right :) And I'd say a weekly release cycle sounds like a griiiiind.

(Edit, I run a team of 10-11 and have to work with developers from interns to senior with 10+ years of experience... so it's not like I'm just cowboy coding all in a vacuum... and we're reasonably successful at what we do :D)
