goodlinks··on Is BI dead? – On dismantling data's ship of Theseus
I appologise in advance for probably using poor terminology..

Maybe I am a naive fool but IMHO the benifits of BI are reconciliation of the business model:

- reconciling processes - reconciling data - reconciling governance

Its a painful process to impliment and you will hit all of your compliance, governance and change management issues head on.

IMHO if you accept that this is what you are doing then its potentially very valuable for your business, but it must be done humbly with humilty as every single measure and many dimensions are each a project on their own.

The pretty graphs are largely irrelevant apart from making employees feel valued and to re-enforce abstractions via visual metaphors.

I get pissed off when end users are not trained in consuming the database warehouse through tools like excel or access. This project should include general IT education programme for most companies.

Also.. if the end users cannot use a pivot table then you need to teach them that and prototype a bunch of stuff in excel before you go anywhere near BI of any flavour.

goodlinks··on Satan should chair your meetings: A literature lover’s guide to office politics
THere is a particular term for when a group of people all know that everyone else in the group know somehting.

I have forgotten the word but to me this is what meetings are about in a way. go one to one first, get all the feedback, make all the changes. then get everyone in a room and say "everyone knows this diagram/document/decision point, right and we all agree on it" - then everyone looks round the room and somethign animal happens.. a new word may have entered their vocaulary, or a new imaginary hill top to strive for exists.

That common agreement is like a wedding or something.. it sort of means nothing.. but now we can all use this shorthand "married" and certain expectations will commonly align.. not only that you can ask just about anyone who knows the couple and they will have a very clear memory that, yes that definately happened, yes i will testify as a witness (i cannot lie about it as there were lots of people at that wedding).

wedding analogy is probably terrible, sorry.

goodlinks··on Please Bring Back Our Downvotes: Society Desperately Needs It
A comment disputing the post with its own upvotes seems a better representation.

So original post states x (it can gather up votes that mean relevance). Then responses are posted, positive, negative, adding nuance - doesnt matter.. then those responses get up votes.

Seems to me that everything can be done with positive re-inforcement.

I would like to be able to filter out out votes though, maybe within a scope. So if you post x, someone disputes it with a comment that i disagree with that gets lots of upvotes.. i would like to be able to flag all those users as incompetent within that domain (this would just be my opinion and no one else would see it) then i can have two upvote scores: the masses, and the "competent in my eyes" masses.

I know this isnt a full solution.. just putting ideas out there

I always wondered if IEC61508 would ever be applied like this.

IIRC it could be interpeted as coving a range of types of harm to people and the environment that is not restricted to control systems.

goodlinks··on I Was Paralyzed by Severe Depression. Then Came Ketamine
Fair comment, though the word slang is doing a lot of judgement work and the whole point is that offensivity is subjective. I chose that word as its right out there on the spectrum but genuinely seems totally harmless to me and means person with some additional flavour and familiarity.

I am not recommending the usage of the word. Just pointing out that my comfort with it doesnt make it okay to use.

Agreed that it probably totally failed to getthe message across.. i guess as someone who grew up in a dialect i am used all kinds of moderation and consideration for the listner, and so i don't buy these hard done by arguments over being respectful. I cannot talk in a way that the thoughts come in to my head outside a ridiculously small number of people and to me, it only adds to the richness of life and my personal growth. Ymmv

We are imobilised, we have lost all the momentum we had. Can we get back some of that dynamism we had prior to change x.. i dont see an issue with finding other ways to talking and if it turns out that those ways of speaking offend people i bet i willlearn somenew perspective when i hear why.

This is not a newspeak situation. This is just listening and trying to cause less pain.

goodlinks··on I Was Paralyzed by Severe Depression. Then Came Ketamine
Same as calling some a cunt imho. The parts of scotland i grew up in it basically means "person".

And if i use it at work like this people know i am not meaning it the qymay it sounds but they still correct me.

That discuasion leads me to have better more productive language in the future. If i cannot handle some constructive criticism thats on me.

I know it can be hard for people who are very normalised to a certain way of speaking.. but thems the breaks. Better than actually being paralysed imho.. plus if i come up with another term for this i can use it with an audience that actually includes paralised people and the reference will still make sense.

No body expects perfect. I still swear too much at work and i still accidentally throw in metaphorical adjectives that belong in the past. But i am better at it than my grandpa (not that i ever heard him say cunt :) )

goodlinks··on I Was Paralyzed by Severe Depression. Then Came Ketamine
Hmm not sure what you are arguing against here.

I didnt say all progress was good, only that progress has a profile and looking at this specific area: what is it about respecting people and understanding the importance of mental health has not been good.

I literally asked the reader to look at this specific issue.

But i agree not all progress is good and some progress is only temporarily good. E.g. capitalism, advertising, intellectual property

goodlinks··on I Was Paralyzed by Severe Depression. Then Came Ketamine
Imho this is how we achieve greatness.

People getting pissed over things there parents took as inevitable is basically the definition of progress.

This is the first generation where mental health has been considerd a value. While its easy to dismiss there terminology issues i would say a few things:

1. That its hard to imagine the impact of having a defining life challange constantly talked about by strangers callously.

2. Go back and look at historical "political correctness gone mad" arguments.. even just to the 90s. The ones i have found all seem examples of things we would not dream of saying today and for good reason.

3. These apparently low priority discussions are how you really solve the root causes of issues. Its by figurng out how to support the un supported that all of society is elevated.

goodlinks··on Facebook says I'm abusive content [video]
Edit: to be clear if you cannot afford enough moderators to stop child abuse or murder videos being posted then shut your platform down as its not viable. I am more tlaking about how moderation gets weaponised etc.
goodlinks··on Facebook says I'm abusive content [video]
I 100% agree that moderation could be lightyears better.

However i see this as being a bit like the BBC problem: beleiving there is such a thing as being objective, there just isnt.

You can have a group of likeminded people who mostly agree and need a bit of moderation for when someones external bad day leaks into their interactions on the plaform. However if there is an underlying fundamental difference of opinion or goals then the moderators become just another weapon.

We need leaders not moderators. Moderators in difference of opinion just end up punishing the weak one way or another. Leaders show by example what we can aspire to, which in turn guides moderators in how to apply the rules.

If you have global platforms who are the leaders? What direction should they lead that works for china and the US?

goodlinks··on Facebook says I'm abusive content [video]
Imho it cannot work because we dont globally agree whats okay to do and say.

I think mass media has some fundamental flaws that we havent accepted yet.

Edit: take out advertising in intellectual property and you would get rid of a bunch of bad actors and cobra effects.

goodlinks··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I wonder what the carbon footprint of a new gpu is.. it would be great to see all the old mining and ai cards being used to game on. I bet they can all do a decent 1080p game no?
goodlinks··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I mine with my gpu when i dont use it for other things.. i am still using the heat it geterates, it genuinely allows me to have the central heating off for more months of the year and on for fewer hours when i do use it.

I considerd selling my 3080 as i struggled to justify keeping it given the price they go for on ebay, but in the end kept it due to concerns over the chip shortage..

Gamers are miners are scalpers..

im not a fan of companies dictating what i do with things i bought from them..

Level1techs did a video on using tesla gpus for graphics, so all of this seems like bullying really to me as a consumer.. if nvidia want to help make that easier!

goodlinks··on Researchers, lawmakers want Facebook's mental health research
Imho advertising is a meme that is at odds with humanity (meme as in the original definition).

People worry about ai operating in software, this is an ai that has been running in the collective wetware of humans for some time that is significantly hindering us.

goodlinks··on Ask HN: What lessons did you learn from your best or worst colleagues?
doesnt matter how wrong or personally based the attack/criticism is. The more extreme the situation the more important it is to keep to the plan.

the lessons learned will cover all of existance as you will learn more about how people model the world, problems and solutions beyond the specifics of the problem at hand.

*if doing this drains you make a change of environment (e.g. job), however i find that the discussions you have like this change other peoples thinking more effectively, so its also how you sew the seeds of cultural change.

goodlinks··on Ask HN: What lessons did you learn from your best or worst colleagues?
Just listen and try to steel man what they are saying as best you can before you start to consider how it might be wrong.

Try to get onto the path of thought that led them there, but let the questions that arise naturally for you hold off as long as you can.

To be clear this is like a policy, you will fail at it but it reminds you of the prinicals that you believe in.

I learn a lot doing this in more ways than i could explain in a book, never mind a comment.

goodlinks··on DarkSide ransomware gang quits after servers, Bitcoin stash seized
I thought privateers were state sponsored (i thought that was the distinction from piracy?). Which sort of makes the comparison to ransom ware potentially more apt/thought provoking?

In anycase disparity of oppourtunity is what breaks trust and therefor collaboration. The world needs to universally operate in the ballpark of fairness or we are all at risk in the long term. (This comment is also influenced by the under valued tech resources thought).

Edit (sorry some more thought while fixing typos): When the disparity of oppourtunity is at state level there are privateers and wars, when at a personal level there are muggings and burglaries etc.

*this is all probably stupidly obvious.. but as its against uncontrolled capitalism or classist segregation we dont seem to want to say it too much maybe?

Thank you. I just couldnt see it. For some reason i was having a mental block on that new icon appearing.
goodlinks··on Ask HN: Is YouTube forced autoplay now?
Oh wow, thanks ive been looking for it for a couple of days.. I had a suspicion I was wrong. Of couse as the button was moved,so my setting of not autoplaying was wiped everywhere making it a bit more confusing.

Been noticing a few suspicious changes recently. making adverts huge and in the place where you hold your phone in portrait. And many ads the skip button doesnt work (not no skip ones).

But then i never know if its me or not as apparently my sanity is unimportant.

goodlinks··on FBI arrests man for plan to kill 70% of Internet in AWS bomb attack
Agree so much! having billions of individual intelligences running around with the ability to kill each other is actually hard to manage.

Change management is what makes organisations work, great processes or systems are just a bonus.

goodlinks··on Dear Young Artist [pdf]
I suppose what i am getting at is two things:

Objectively good imho is as much a fallicy in the space of science and engineering as it is in art.

It takes the same artistic/creative skill to be a good engineer as it does an artist.

This is maybe a pedantic perspective, but i find it relevant.

Edit: objectively good for engineering is subjective expanation: you need requirements to define objectively good. I.e. sub optimal metrics to represent an entities value model. If you say hey, but engineers are structured/meticulous once they have the requirments.. i would say so are artists.

goodlinks··on Dear Young Artist [pdf]
Art is about constraints. Engineering is about constraints. I am saddened somewhat but the seperation of art and science, it seems like a misunderstanding.

Being good at something is effectively being able to creatively deal with constraints and get good results. Trying to say science / engineering is different because the success function doesnt involve as much human opinion doesnt seem right.

goodlinks··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
This makes me chuckle, and its a nice story cos you got a job :)..

All the controls in the world mean bugger all when ultimately the deciding factor is a human.

No one ever wants to admit that the world runs on trust and respect :).

goodlinks··on Ideas to improve the user and developer experiences of databases
I played around making a stupid thing a bit like sqlfiddle but it would animate the executuon plan to visually show how rows were joined etc. (Say showing 10-20 rows of data at each stage), could also show stats for full dataset being processed.

I thought it would be handy for those learning sql, but i dont think its a pro tool.

In anycase i am mainly posting this comment as it seems a simple thing to do but ive never seen another tool that does it.. maybe if i had taken the project a few steps further i would have found a reason its a terrible idea.

goodlinks··on Generalists vs specialists – Who has a greater chance of success? (2019)
Imho bi / data people need to be generalists to be good. Even if you've only done data, if you're good, i bet you have got inside the heads many job roles, within and outwith IT. You've probably dealt with you're fair share of connectivity and authentication / permission issues. Not to mention being able to translate between strategic objectives and day to day data capture..
goodlinks··on Starship goes up. Starship goes down. But is the program moving forward?
Terrible article imho. Low effort on the research, the only negative (presumably the basis of the question in the title): "maybe NASA wont like prototyping?"
goodlinks··on Michael J Fox: ‘Every step now is a frigging math problem, so I take it slow’
I think so.

It changes the meaning from: i have to do acual math to complete this activity.

To: its frustrating and complicated to make basic moves that require planning and preperation that dont always go to plan and are hard to even visualise.

You dont think he should be emotional about this?
