goobynight··on The Uncertain Fate of Amsterdam’s Red-Light District
You phrased this question way better than I could.

This person has a valid, subjective opinion on taking penis in return for cash, but it's not necessarily the case for everyone.

Note that I'm not saying that being a sex slave is better than working a low tier job. I'm comparing peeing in a bottle, having every movement tracked/optimized and skipping meals to deliver Amazon packages vs true freelance sex work.

goobynight··on Stripe to move to South San Francisco
I feel like Boeing has far more of a monopoly on hiring the kind of talent they need than Stripe. They also seem like a place that has more "lifers".

Stripe engineers can just say "no thanks" and go work for SF company n+1 down the road. Does Boeing have competition in the same city that could reasonably hire Boeing knowledge workers? Honest question.

goobynight··on Stripe to move to South San Francisco
Your assumption that people would want to move is one I would have made until I saw the reality.

You can barely get people to move to Denver while keeping an SF salary.

goobynight··on The Uncertain Fate of Amsterdam’s Red-Light District
I don't see why being "trashy" and into drugs+sex has to be relegated to a journey outside the city center. Pearl clutching moralists (not necessarily you) always have a strong voice at this table though. Being interested in these things is no better than raising useless generations of children who, on average, will eventually have MULTIPLE degenerates in the family line.

Some jobs are just simply for poor people. I'd rather solve that problem than isolate the effort to sex work.

The work involving sex doesn't make it significantly more exploitative than being so poor that you're willing to take short term gains and long term losses driving for Uber or something. At least you can come out profitable in sex work.

Let's also think of the service being provided here. Low economic status, ugly men can have their biological urges satisfied. What happens to incels if that goes away? This question is only going to become more important, given the trajectory of hypergamy.

As someone that lives in the US, neighborhoods, in my opinion, are ruined by moralists, even if they appear respectful. e.g. I can't legally walk around sipping a beer.

goobynight··on How Much Money Do Parking Lots Make?
Sure, but they believe the market isn't at the top. Opportunity cost could continue to increase until they cash out.

That is, maybe they could sell for $10 million now vs making $200k per year on parking, but if they hold on for another 5 years, the offers could rise to $15 million.

goobynight··on Uber lays off around 350 more across Eats, self-driving and other departments
It depends on which roles the ex-Ubers were in and who they are paired with.

Ex-Uber engineers are probably just as good as ever. It's not like they were the ones tinkering with competition, business model, profitability, whatever.

Their task was to execute on engineering goals and Uber hires pretty good engineers to do that.

goobynight··on Why is Middle School so hard?
I don't think that's really what we are discussing here.

Right now we have everyone except fringe dropouts going to middle school. That is, there are 2 options: middle school education or no education.

What's more interesting is if we could take people that would be successful in middle school and see if they could achieve increased success by participating in a different model.

goobynight··on How Much Money Do Parking Lots Make?
Denver is littered with surface parking lots. This is due to the relatively recent spike in value.

There is no way you could buy the property now and operate a parking lot, but they got in when it was cheap, so it's all profit now.

goobynight··on US workers may have to change social media use as firms adapt to China's rules
If it isn't explicitly not protected though, there could still be a fun case to deal with.
goobynight··on WeWork says will file to withdraw IPO
The people at these companies actually handling individual contributor level execution are pretty talented. It's just that the plan/model they work under is not sustainable.
goobynight··on Juul Labs CEO to Step Down
Any company big enough to be operating at scale has some software needs and not everyone is fulfilled by SaaS solutions.
goobynight··on Juul Labs CEO to Step Down
Plant the idea in their head, even if they don't like you as an authority, and you might end up with a customer for life once those kids forget you and go looking for a vice.

$10k per room of kids is probably a low cost of customer acquisition for a potential lifetime addiction.

goobynight··on WeWork’s Adam Neumann Steps Down as CEO
Doesn't seem ironic to me. It's easier to be the play by play guy/sports analyst than to get into the field/cage/arena/whatever and make something happen.
goobynight··on WeWork cofounder demanded employees be fired because she disliked their 'energy'
I've seen cofounders like this. Sometimes they let someone go because they simply don't like that they look old or something.

Fwiw, the person I speak of was also looking for a hype-based exit and the mission was to sell, not build, a business. It worked.

goobynight··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
You would sooner find me living in a tent or teaching English for a pittance than putting up with this.
goobynight··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
I'd wager that's the reason. People can't relate to it. Not even close.

I'm not scraping by in my early twenties with a futon trying to bust into a career with a full year's salary in student loan debt. I immediately started making what many people make at the tail end of what they'd call a good career. All while coming in just about whenever I feel like it.

My life is a joke in comparison and it's just a coincidence that I landed in it. Same with other guys I know. They happened to like something, such as making Quake mods and then stumbled into making 200k/year in 35hr per week, with maybe half of that 35 being YAML engineering.

goobynight··on Edward Snowden: Permanent Record
Obama is the equivalent of a SWE candidate that only studies Leetcode and interviewing tactics.

People thought everything else (e.g. the substance of the job) would be on the level of his oratory skills, but it turned out he was just some guy that knew how to get votes.

goobynight··on WeWork Bonds Drop Below Par for First Time Since IPO Filing
The key here is that it success doesn't even have to be likely for VCs to jump in on something that everyone/everyone from a very large category (workers) might end up using e.g. Uber, WeWork, electric scooter sharing. That is, the demand is clearly already there. Rather than working from profit and trying to scale demand they are working on profitability of a huge market as the technical problem.

They have more money than investment targets, so they basically fund a few moonshot projects that look like they have a 1%+ chance rather than a 0% chance.

I suppose the thesis is that once one of these eventually wins, the losses on the rest will be more than recovered. You just have to do enough 1 out of 100 projects.

goobynight··on A Beginner’s Introduction to Python Web Frameworks (2018)
Right. With Flask, I can simply get to the point where I'm rendering templates, styling with CSS, adding assets and populating template variables with data from simple (or complex) functions I've written.

You can take care of a lot with just that.

goobynight··on Why Is Joe Rogan So Popular?
Really? It's one of the most obvious social phenomena out there.

Women respect it too, for what that's worth. Short, weak men have low and still declining value from both genders.

Good looking prisoners (even those that violently target women) receive fangirl mail because they are edgy and attractive. Meanwhile 5'4" SWEs are probably full on incel more often than not.

That's just life.

goobynight··on The We Company S-1
While the answer would be no for most, it helps to have VCs and institutions that have a buy-in price similar to yours, essentially advocating to protect everyone's investment.

They own the search results. Google isn't a public utility that gets hijacked.

Yelp can start their own search competitor if they enjoy(ed) the synergy.

goobynight··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
Right. It's a path to faster financial security though. Realistically, the amount of time it takes for them to find a new VP role is baked into the compensation.
goobynight··on As crime dries up, Japan’s police hunt for things to do (2017)
Yeah I wouldn't bother either. Bikes seem like the first thing to go to chaos once the police make it obvious that it isn't on the radar.

It's like an athlete in combat sports not hiding the fact that they are gassed. There has to be some attempt to guise the reality or the situation devolves even faster.

goobynight··on As crime dries up, Japan’s police hunt for things to do (2017)
For what it's worth, I wish I even had a single detective working my bicycle theft case. Hell, put an intern on the case just to make me feel like something might happen.

Right now, property crime reports just blatantly go into the void in US cities.

goobynight··on Uber Lays Off 400
Mid-level? Naw.

That's lab rat money. I'd say 5-10k more, so we're close, but that's a double digit percent difference from 40k.

goobynight··on Uber Lays Off 400
A lot of people use it because it's so obvious that they're operating at a loss. That's why the ride is so cheap. If they brought prices up to what they "should" be, volume would go down or the competition would snatch it up.

If Uber wants to take a loss on my ride, I'll be there every time.
