goobynight··on How housing became the world’s biggest asset class
My family definitely got the short end of most of these factors in the midwest.

* Very few high paying companies in the area and they were less likely to move due to owning.

* They made about 3.3k/year in appreciation for 20 years. That's on the order of a 13 hour per month side gig.

* Any gains definitely erased by the amount of labor they put into things such as mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, having the washing machine hose disconnect and leak water down into the basement. All of these little things added up to many man hours across.

goobynight··on How housing became the world’s biggest asset class
You're doubting what? That there are people doing this?

It's not hard on a bay area L4+ salary to have a spare 40-50k several times a year (20% of a 200-250k property), especially if you are snowballing with profits from multiple other properties.

goobynight··on How housing became the world’s biggest asset class
The problem isn't isolated though. We're at the point where people living in tech hubs are buying houses in Ohio every couple of months, simply because they can.

(owning) housing also isn't necessarily cheap relative to the jobs available in these areas.

goobynight··on Tricks to start working despite not feeling like it
I'll go ahead and fire off a recommendation to find a muay thai gym that has dedicated conditioning classes and some cool people. I wish I would have discovered it 10 years earlier when I started running cross country.

Running, for me, was the Runescape of sports. Very grindy, with very little room for me to use my mind.

Right. And most people are fully persuaded by much lesser sums.
goobynight··on Microsoft will be carbon negative by 2030
If we're going to start counting 2nd and 3rd degree connections, why not count people that are home playing video games on a Microsoft console instead of driving somewhere?
goobynight··on Uber's chief of scooters, bikes to depart
I'll opt to ride in the street more often in a downtown area, since traffic is typically slow anyways. At minimum, I'll try to hit up the bike lane.

It does help that my scooter can accelerate up to 20-30mph easily though.

goobynight··on Uber's chief of scooters, bikes to depart
The laws are coming faster in some places than others and the presence of rentals is actually bad in terms of keeping attention on scooters down.

I figured I'd have 1-2 good summers in my current city before the laws caught up. So far they've only kicked us out of the main walking street, which sucks since it's actually perfect for scooters, but whatever. This is one of those moments where I wish I felt like a partner to government rather than a subject.

I haven't been hassled or seen someone hassled for sidewalk riding. I make sure to treat pedestrians like Gods though and opt to get off and walk my scooter before causing chaos, confusion, or even the optics of impatience.

I bought from ehweels and Jason is awesome. They honored the 1 year warranty on my Dualtron Spider.
goobynight··on Uber's chief of scooters, bikes to depart
You 100% want something with dual motors.

Look at the full lineup offered by Dualtron, if you'd like top of the line.

I chose the Dualtron Spider, as it was made to be only 44lb while able to go 38mph, do wheelies, has full suspension for the skate park and so on.

If you are willing to deal with more weight, there are other Dualtron options that are probably built a bit better (44lb was a hard limit for legality in Singapore), but the spider is still an amazing machine.

Browsing the electric scooters subreddit is also useful. They link out to this sheet:

https://electric-scooter.guide/comparisons/compare-electric-...

Edit: you are actually too heavy for a Dualtron spider, which is specced for 220lb.

goobynight··on Uber's chief of scooters, bikes to depart
The nuisance -> regulation flow is precisely why I became an early adopter and dropped ~$2500 on a fast one .

I wanted to have my fun before the hordes ruin it. If everyone had a scooter that could go over 35mph, it would be chaos.

To those that enjoy hooligan style fun, the time to get an electric scooter is now, before the laws catch up to the reality and make e-kick scooters just another point a to b experience. That said, have the hooligan fun in a way that doesn't accelerate the adoption of laws.

How does something like a sound system help you more in India than the US?
goobynight··on The End of the Bonus Culture Is Coming to Wall Street?
I can only wish to not only be so attractive, but to meet these types of women.
goobynight··on The End of the Bonus Culture Is Coming to Wall Street?
I agree that it definitely shouldn't be that way.

It's a cop out for the sales team to point and say "we made the sale, we're itemizing the value as ours when the whole possibility of the sale is made by the team.

This is why I like an RSU component as an engineer. If our value goes up, I expect to see some of it.

If there is no equity upside, engineers should stop working for bankers.

goobynight··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
Net displacement doesn't matter. Convenience and features do.

We have to fully admit that, all else equal, being responsible for the security and maintenance of a scooter is worse than offloading that to Lime/Lyft/Bird.

The only reason I bought a scooter is because I wanted to go over 30mph with suspension (i.e. new features). I use mine for joyriding and secure it in my apartment.

goobynight··on Ask HN: Are RSUs worth your loyalty?
RSUs are as good or better than cash as long as you can keep a job for the length of the cliff. That's typically just a year...

The 4th year of an RSU grant is just as unavailable as my base salary 4 years away.

The interstates are great for truck delivery and one-off trips such as moving/vacation, but a job is a daily round trip.

How far are software engineers really going to commute? If they don't commute, are they going to move to your 2nd/3rd tier town?

While I agree the car theft is different, let's not pretend losing your window and several goods (potentially linked to your livelihood) is simple to deal with.

I personally like petty theft being criminalized.

I think the best model is to have your "devops/sre guy" embedded right on the team.

I market myself in interviews as a software engineer (on the same team as the other SWEs) that just happens to focus on what actually getting this product into production and keeping it going looks like.

I got my start in this by working at a startup where we were responsible for everything just by the nature of the limited staff. I think that's how a lot of people in Devops get their start.

I didn't even know coding without a thought about deployment was a thing until I joined a huge company.

goobynight··on A year after 20k Googlers walked off the job, they’re madder than ever
Agreed. Going into a fit every 3-6 months doesn't do anything if quitting isn't on the table.

This storyline is just hilarious to me now.

goobynight··on Ask HN: What are unintended consequences of new tech you've noticed?
I'm try to respectfully decline them, but if they try to passive aggressively guilt me, I teeter on the cusp of countering by attacking back and trying to crack their self esteem.

I haven't done it yet and wouldn't be proud of myself, but it would feel good.

You are appearing to confuse VC backed non-tech startups with tech.

To talk about tech in general, look to the major players: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and so on.

goobynight··on The Uncertain Fate of Amsterdam’s Red-Light District
Good question.

Are we talking about sex workers globally or in countries where it is legalized and centralized?

I'm comparing specifically to places like Hong Kong and Amsterdam that have this work legalized, which is the topic at hand. OP wants the red light district either moved or removed.

Prostitution is going to exist in some form. I think we agree there, so do you think moving it outside of the city center is going to improve the situation for these women? I feel like it would do the opposite.
