gonzalohm··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
How is vscode not in the same league? JB feels way too bloated and slow and doesn't add anything significant over other offerings
gonzalohm··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
I was referring to a previous redesign lol. A few days after my comment Firefox released yet another unwanted redesign. I have disabled it with the nova enabled = 'false' but it shows what I was talking about
gonzalohm··on The AI boom is making the cheapest smartphones disappear
Care to elaborate? Are you saying that because banks are loaning to data centers, the rest of the people are experiencing an increase in mortgage rates?
gonzalohm··on The AI boom is making the cheapest smartphones disappear
Except that a 1-2 year old phone already has noticeable battery wear. I really hope the EU ends up forcing manufacturers to make changing batteries easy
gonzalohm··on Our approach to EU text provenance rules
Focus on building what? A future in which only big companies get credit for their work?
gonzalohm··on Self-hosted HTTP tunnels with SSH and Nginx
I don't have the code at hand, but I think it's better to just have a nginx server that only serves content if the browser has a specific certificate installed. That way you generate a key pair, share the public key with anyone that you want to share the content with and that's it.

Downside is that some browsers don't handle the certificates properly (especially on phones)

So like wireguard then?
gonzalohm··on RuneScape's Position on Gen AI
That's not true though. Bad code will manifest in a lot of ways. Affecting players and how they perceive the game. See Cyberpunk 2077, the art is pretty good, but the game is extremely buggy. I stopped playing because of that
gonzalohm··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
So you basically want to remove yourself from the equation? I agree that centralization is bad. But leaving "using your agent" as the only way to collaborate is just another way of centralizing. Now you need to basically pay to run git commands
gonzalohm··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
It's true that setting up a service without Cloudfare is painful. But there will be a day in which anyone that has set up something using Cloudfare will go through some pain either by something breaking or because Cloudfare will show their true colors.

Do you want the pain now or later?

gonzalohm··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
It's okay to recognize you were wrong even if it's late
gonzalohm··on Everyone's Packing Up
I think with time. At some point people will see that codebases are becoming unmaintainable
gonzalohm··on Gemini ending free use of Flash and Pro models
What do you mean entitled? It's Google the one trying to shove AI into all their products.

What should be illegal is to try to get customers by letting it use for free or at a low price and the jack up prices

gonzalohm··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
Do you have a recommendation for an ebook?
gonzalohm··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
So if an app installs an encrypted volume for which you don't have the password to, you go to jail? That doesn't make sense. How can they know if I have the password or not
gonzalohm··on You are no longer invited to dinner
None of my friends have a backyard big enough to host a BBQ
gonzalohm··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
This may not be shared by other people, but my two cents.

I personally don't like inviting people to my house (or going to other people's houses) because I already spend a good chunk of my day indoors (I work from home). Whenever possible, I prefer to meet outside.

gonzalohm··on Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs
If I understand correctly it means that they have a lot of debt and with increasing interest rates, they have to spend a significant chunk in just paying interest
gonzalohm··on Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs
Seeing all the financial juggling AI companies do, it wouldn't surprise me if one of the customers is themselves lol
gonzalohm··on I am done with this shit
Why do people keep comparing LLMs to a compiler. A compiler translates a higher level programming language to a lower level (usually assembly) one.

Natural language is not a programming language and cannot be compiled

gonzalohm··on One Month Without AI
So you would take drugs if they didn't have adverse effects, but you don't want to see the adverse effects of AI. And I'm not talking about addiction, I'm talking about building over-engineered crap and spending money doing so
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
I do try to learn how systems work and remove "abstractions" as much as I can. I do that with coding and my personal life.

Actually baking is a good example, I used to be really bad so I spent time learning. I don't do it every day but now I understand how bread is made. I bought a 3D printer so I could print parts to fix stuff myself. I learned to do my own oil changes, I learned how engines work, etc.

My point is that I try to learn more, not less, which is what AI is trying to achieve

gonzalohm··on One Month Without AI
I don't use AI and the company I work for is doing just fine. Why don't you take a daily dose of Ketamine, that may give you interesting ideas like it does for Silicon valley "entrepreneurs". Don't you want to be the next Peter Thiel or Elon Musk?
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
That's true, but it's also prone to over documenting. As an example, for some reason it always tries to include a diagram of the folder structure in the project. I think that's not really useful and it's something that changes so often it's not worth documenting
gonzalohm··on One Month Without AI
I think that comparing AI to cocaine is a really good analogy. It gives you that feeling that you are amazing and can do anything, but it's just a feeling, in the end you are just high and sooner or later will have to come back to reality and face a bad implementation or a hangover
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
The spec will never be able to capture all the edge cases. The code is what runs. It also doesn't capture all the edge cases (that's why code has bugs) but it does a better job at that than documentation. Documentation can also become stale easily
gonzalohm··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
I think the main complaint is why the need to change the UI. I happened with Firefox not long ago. They redesigned the whole thing and the only workaround is installing the Firefox UI fix addon. Same with Reddit. If you are going to make UI changes, make them optional, don't force them to your users
gonzalohm··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
Why do you have automatic updates enabled? You should have learned by now that most software gets worse over time. Be selective about what you update
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
100% this. Some people are basically adding AI as a dependency for their projects. They no longer understand the code
gonzalohm··on Ask HN: Who is smarter than you that you listen to what they have to say?
I'm pretty sure it's a joke post. Literally all the people OP listed are psychopaths
