Do you have refereneces to NeRF papers that can directly compute the field in the latent code? Because it NeRF based methods are essentially performing solving the rendering equation to learn the mapping, what could be alternative equation for directly learning latent code? Your idea is interesting, could you elaborate on it!
going_ham··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
Yes! That is why deliberate practice requires some mentors or guiding factor. It's really hard to invest in deliberate pratice and most of us overlook it! When practicing quality > quantity.

I gave up a lot of hobbies because I didn't have mentor or guidance factor to help me get past the wall. You can only learn upto a certain point on your own. After that, it requires quite a lot of attention and focus to not suck.

going_ham··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
I have one suggestion! Try to find one thing you are deeply interested since your childhood. It means that you have some subconscious goals you want to achieve. Now invest all your time on it, no matter how hard it is. It will be very rewarding at the end.

If you are working on software and your interest lies in physical world, start building hardware/software for it. You will suck at it. It won't make an impact. But it will free you from your lack of focus. It is just about chasing dreams! No one is stopping you from doing that. Also, take job as job and not as passion. The whole idea, if you work on what you love, then you never have to work in your life is bullshit. Once you start working on what you love, it is still work. Only difference is motivation. You will get motivation if you follow your deep desires.

Also make promise to yourself to not abandon this one desire in middle of the way. And stick with it to the end. Whatever pops up in your head after you decide on it, add it to your someday list. And keep pursuing things slowly while you are enjoying. Never forget to enjoy what you are doing!

going_ham··on Learning Is Remembering
Ohh, that's a cool opinion!!! Thank you ^_^
going_ham··on Learning Is Remembering
Thank you for writing it. I have been feeling something similar. The ability to truly understand requires the ability to know few terms and what they mean. I thought it was only me who felt it like so. Most of my friends who venture on creative tasks are able to recall a lot of things because of practice and without having to be distracted!

But does it effect the field like programming? When programming, if I can remember the context, then I can easily search it (research paper, books, documentation, forums etc) Now, with Co-Pilot, isn't it effectively beneficial to understand a topic and develop a general problem solving framework for ourselves so that we can let the AI do it's thing?

What are your opinions regarding it?

going_ham··on Ask HN: Do you regret being a generalist?
It gives me hope. I am on same position as OP. However, I have decided to sell my soul to Graphics. I mean literally and figuratively. I see there are only few people who can do graphics compared to other field. It is quite a niche to work in graphics!
going_ham··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
On the flip side, I had the opposite experience. With Linux it was just the matter of compiling from the source. And most of the time, it would just compile without any issue. With windows, I needed to download MSVC and the whole studio and wasn't able to have the app running. I really did not understand why it had to be so complicated. At least with linux there is a support from the community because the same problem might have been encountered by someone else.

Further, in Windows, whenever I was trying new things or doing out of the normal stuff, it required modifying a lot of registry values. I found it horrible compared to Linux, where everything is a file and you can immediately change the file.

going_ham··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
This puzzle is so cool because it revolves around casual graphs in classical planning problem! One can use heuristics based search to come up with optimal solutions. I really like this innovative approach to the design.

However, one edge from house to tree wasn't clear at first because, I thought of it as logical or while it was about logical and. Other than that, pretty awesome work!!

Edit:: Scrolling down the comments someone seems to already implemented a graph search. That is pretty quick: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32885309

going_ham··on The link between personality and success (2021)
One of the most mind blowing thing I learnt recently is that there is not introvert, extrovert and these kind of traits present within a person. They are equivalent to the typing we use in Computer Science/Mathematics defined by psychologist to study behaviors. As certain objects can fall under multiple type, each individual do not have a type but exhibit certain behavior of so defined type. As a result, it allows psychologist to refine/narrow/evaluate things based on these behaviors. But as a person, we are constantly evolving. Once you dissociate the personality from behavior, it shows how colorful we as individuals are!

going_ham··on An enthusiast’s deep dive into mechanical keyboard switches
I switched to a split keyboard. Went from 8 wpm to 30 wpm in 9 days!!! It's doable. I can work at this speed. I had 70 WPM. But I believe I will gradually reach better speed.

However, the gains have been huge for me! I can finally type in relaxed position. The layers are amazing!! I don't have to reach shift for those symbols. Everything is within good reach. Let's see what happens down the line. But split keyboard layout sold me! Will definitely go deeper into making one with low profile choc!!!

going_ham··on The forty-year programmer
I haven't started yet and I am already tired of Computer Vision and pace of catching up in the field. I am saying so as I am working towards my Master's thesis.

The field evolves faster than I thought. It is so quick and nothing makes sense here. 5 year old technique is pre-historic.

Like you I also like creative problem solving, and aha moments. Sometimes I think I should have studied some physics I feel like switching to software engineering but I do not have the qualifications for it. All I have is years of experience in ML and CV. However, I managed to transition to graphics somehow! Graphics is something I feel closest to physics and enjoy it a lot! I want to get into simulations and animations, but no idea how!

going_ham··on Ask HN: Working as a software engineer for 5 years, I've forgotten all CS stuff
Exactly (esp for ML/Graphics/Vision). However, I cannot say for other fields. That is why it is necessary to keep revising these fundamentals. I always plan to do it, but end up doing something else. >.<

If anyone has idea on ways to design a revision schedule, please help me. Thank you in advance!

I would love to apply on these positions but it takes a colossal effort to pull anything. Those willing to bet into the future, I have few suggestions.

1. Design an app that takes in series of text prompt and generates images for corresponding prompt that is coherent across all images. These images will be keyframes.

2. Design an app that acts like database of videos, so that you can query any kind of clip.

3. Try to use view- consistent generated images to get 3D models.

4. Define agents that can play for a given rule and gradually adjust the rule or even form new rules!

I want to be that post in hn which inspires multi million dollar company!!

Good luck.

going_ham··on H1B rejected – builds unicorn back home
Does it mean it costed the US of potential opportunities? I don't think it made any difference in the US. But it surely helped in his home country.

While we are at it, what do you think of current visa issue in the USA? For a long time, I thought it was difficult only to people of Asian countries to migrate to US, but turns out it is equally difficult for any other nations.

In the long term, does it make a difference in US if it doesn't bring talent across the world? Of course, there are a lot of talent and there is always someone willing to move to US. So it shouldn't be an issue, should it?

going_ham··on How I regained concentration and focus

going_ham··on LeCun's 2022 paper on autonomous machine intelligence does not cite prior work
It's him again.

That must be enough to give context on who I am talking about.

I do not know what to tell about him. Sure he has explored a lot of topic and never got the limelight like others. But I think it's time for him to stop gaslighting about other researchers just because they didn't cite his papers. Sure, they could have never read it.

He can make his work shout by publishing better papers and better design.

He could have written the article before too. But why did he write it only after LeCunn wrote it?

I am sorry I haven't read the article because it's him again.

Edit: After glossing through it, it seems he is doing the same thing that he did with GAN.

going_ham··on Absurd Trolley Problems
Wow! Like GP I got only 83. I must have messed up few things here and there!

My rationale was to result to default situations because that's how most of things work. Most of the general events are resulting to average behavior. This makes more sense when you realize world moves without your presence.

So by defaulting, I am ignoring my presence and seeing the result on what happens without me. It was fun decision to make.

In one case, I genuinely saved 5 sentient robots over a human.

going_ham··on The Grug Brained Developer
It totally depends on the case at hand!

I use debugger all the time when I run into pointer related issue, or some checking some tensors in deep neural nets etc.

In some cases, I throw debugger just to see what is going on.

However, I have had few cases where debugger slowed me down. If you are doing something in graphics that requires you debugging issues that spans multiple frames, sometimes it's easier to notice the value over a period of time and see why things are behaving that way. From there you can reason what might be causing the issue. It can be done frame per frame inserting multiple breakpoints, recording them and viewing them accordingly! However, I prefer simple logs in such cases.

I have used both approaches as time demanded.

going_ham··on LaMDA is not sentient
The reason why AI community says NN doesn't "think" lies in the fact that it's trying to solve some min-max problem. The modern day AI is extremely capable of doing things that weren't remotely possible 30 yrs ago. But it is equally difficult for it to think because it has never been taught to think. It has never been taught to rationalize the associations between different objects, how reasoning follows from it and so on. Think of it as a parrot. If you say some word to parrot, it can repeat it. Occasionally it can make weird sounds. But will it know the idea of big words that we use in our vocabulary? Not at all.

Likewise language models are over fitted on human language. Of course it will learn to spit out something because it was trained to do the exact same thing. Focus on relevant part and guess what follows. The best part is this idea is so simple that it just works!

It does what we want to do, it can take a good educated guess depending on word. But give it a long context like an essay and ask it some critical question, it will fail on those. Because that is where thinking comes in. I hope this probably gives you some different perspective.

going_ham··on Berry is a healthy, byte-sized window manager written in C for Unix systems
While people are discussing window managers, one of the most overlooked window manager is: hersbtluftwm.[0]

If you work with multiple monitors, give it a try (today is sunday)! It uses the monitor swapping feature from xmonad but comes with simplicity of editing the config (one doesn't need to learn new programming language to edit config). It's a pretty cool window manager.

going_ham··on Friendships form via shared context, not shared activities
_do they keep asking for favors without giving you the feeling that you are still friends?_

Then they disappear until the next time. I do not mind helping others at all! I try to help people as much as I can.

_if they think, for you to be worthy of their friendship requires effort on your part, then they probably weren't good friends to begin with._

This might be the case with me atm. I simply can't afford to manage a perfectly feasible time because of personal reasons. However, I have friends who work around these limitations and still manage to catch up. There are some who do not consider this limitation.

going_ham··on Friendships form via shared context, not shared activities
> how would you feel if that person contacted you now?

Well, I would just talk with them as if nothing happened However, the conversation always end up with most of them asking something from me.

I think you can get the idea on why I feel this way.

going_ham··on Friendships form via shared context, not shared activities
I really can't understand the idea of friendship. Throughout my life, I never had the opportunity to foster a meaningful friendly relationship (one with trust, loyalty, support etc.) I found it to be apparent when people toss over the things I do.

I have a lot of acquaintances and friends but very few close friends. Other than that, I feel like most people only talk with me when they absolutely need something. Otherwise, I am always the last person to be called on anything.

> Becoming disentangled from your web of mutual commitments, shared history, and collective responsibility is to be rendered into a transaction, a slave.

When author compared that having this "disentangled" social web is like being enslaved to business, I couldn't relate it. Isn't it completely normal? I don't want to idolize friendship, but everything will end eventually. I have experienced this throughout multiple phases of my life. No one of the so called friends made effort to contact me once I disappeared from social media. Only my close friends remained because I put the effort to do so. When I stopped putting effort, even these relationship got eroded (One can't clap with a single hand). This was the moment I realized that there is no such thing as friendship which author described.

Life is what you give meaning to. It's nice that author is there to foster social meaning. For some reason the post felt like it's trying to create void that people without close friends are missing things from life. When I came in peace that I can't rely on any other person but myself, I found peace.

Life has multiple dimensions. No one has to live in one way. It's better to find our own ways and be happy with it.

PS: Just a minor opinion! Do not take it personally.

going_ham··on Ask HN: What's your greatest achievement in life?
It's me coming in peace with the fact that I am just an actor in the grand scheme of things. It helped me keep my sanity, calm my nerves and focus on what I really want to do at the moment. It helped me acknowledge the forces beyond my control and changed the way I see the world. I think it made be more conservative about things but still it's an accomplishment that I am proud of!

I often noticed people asking me why I were chill in most situations.

going_ham··on Ask HN: How do you manage to get updated with graphics development?
Oh, this looks amazing! Thank you!!!
going_ham··on Fake Journal Club
I like his points on active reading of research paper. In my seminar we always had to ask critical question when we were reading.

I also believe there is two way to read a paper. One way is to be critical (normal case). This is necessary if we want to learn something.

Another way is to pretend the author is correct, and try to implement things as quick as possible (applying research approach). The reason is to establish a small "framework" to start our research for ourselves or a baseline. After that we can be critical about the authors work.

For active reading we were taught to go through abstract, results and conclusion. In case of graphics paper that uses ML, we can immediately notice artifacts, inconsistency and minor disturbances. Then, we can be critical on their method, on their claim and reason why things are that way!
