gohrt··on The Art of Pitching: How I Got Published in The Atlantic
> That was a mistake, but not unethical.

No one cares. If you fail to demonstrate professional ethics, it doesn't matter whether it's because you are unprofessional or unethical.

gohrt··on Myths about /dev/urandom (2014)
As long as people post articles about "myths", the myths won't die, because people will remember the myth, and forget the debunk!

PLEASE: If you wanr people to remember your takeways, write TRUE statements, not False statements with debunkings!

gohrt··on Facebook will lose 80% of users by 2017, say Princeton researchers (2014)
Not everyone at FB is an engineer.
gohrt··on Google reveals secret test of AI bot to beat top Go players
"Outside the light cone" is more on point -- it's far enough away or moving fast enough that we'll never be able catch up.
gohrt··on Google reveals secret test of AI bot to beat top Go players
Any rule structured game with fixed finite bounds is solvable.
gohrt··on Heath and Fillekes v. Google Inc. Lawsuit
The committee is how you "pass" the interview. Only awful interview performances are rejected on interview scores alone, before committee. Committee reduces the set of interview scores into a single decision.
gohrt··on Heath and Fillekes v. Google Inc. Lawsuit
There was a miscommunication. The recruiter intended to communicate that "VP-level committee is usually a safety check and pretty much a rubber stamp". That's the review layer above the main Hiring Committee.

If you got rejected by VP committee, that is unusual and work grumbling about -- and possibly constrained by amount of funding available for new hires.

The "come back in a year" is absolutely honest. Many people are hired a year, or 2, or 3 later. Google is happy to say "not sure / not yet" to people and "yes" later.

gohrt··on Uber Doesn’t Want to Give NYC (or Anyone) More Data
Why? Uber drives aren't using the medallion.
gohrt··on Browser auto-fill phishing
Interesting use of CVV, since vendors aren't permitted to store it. But Chrome does, for you... is that synced across browsers? That would require Google to store the CVV on its servers...
gohrt··on Browser auto-fill phishing
Browsers don't auto-fill credit cards and passwords, today, because they are private.

Chrome (and I assume others) has a secure credit card and password auto-fill, separate from regular form auto-fill.

gohrt··on Apple Removes New York Times Apps from iTunes Store in China
That article says that Taiwan didn't have democratic elections in 1990. How is that responsive to a claim that Nationalist China was undemocratic?
gohrt··on George Lucas Can’t Give a $1.5B Museum Away
Not sure what you think "progressive" means.
gohrt··on Renewing Medium’s focus
That's not true, bar soap gets stuck in hair and doesn't rinse well. Look at the ingredients in soap vs shampoo.
gohrt··on Champions of the 401(k) Lament the Revolution They Started
Pensions are funded. There is a national pension insurance fund. They are completely sustainable, as long as they are funded. A pension is an annuity. The pension money comes from money that is withheld from wages.

Now, if some company engages in wage theft (raids its pension fund), that's fraud just as any Madoff-esque pyramid scheme.

the tens of thousands is for all the other similar value propositions they'd want in a car.
gohrt··on Former Apple employees try a different management approach at Pearl Automation
Isn't this how every organization in the world operates?

How can anything resembling non-hobby work get done without a "directly responsible individual"?

gohrt··on Why recursive data structures?
Isomorphic means "have the same shape". It means that there is some structural property that the two objects have in common. The more interesting/complex the property is (and the more superficially different the two objects look), the more defensible the use of the word is.
gohrt··on People's underestimation of AI
Labor Productivity measurement depends on GDP, so it suffers from classic GDP mismeasurement error. GDP only measures $, not value, so it fails to measure technological improvements in a competitive industry -- so it utterly fails to measure productivity (hence the charts showing that labor productivity growth is always tiny). Your computer today costs $1000, but it's 1000x more useful and more complex than that $2000 computer of 30 years ago. In GDP / Labor Productivity terms, though, it's value hasn't changed at all -- in fact, it's DECREASED, since your new computer costs less than the old computer!
gohrt··on People's underestimation of AI
a human vacuum misses spots and isn't very strong
gohrt··on People's underestimation of AI
A robot pharmacist is a trivial application -- it's just a secure vending machine, essentially a fancy coffee machine.
gohrt··on People's underestimation of AI
> how can a guy with an AK47 and a canteen compete with that.

suicide attacks (bombs, airplanes, nuclear radiation) ...which is exactly what we see today.

gohrt··on Tesla footage of braking before crash ahead [video]
It should be, though. Car #1 stopped shorted and car #2 hit it. Car #2 was at fault for hitting Car #1.

Car #3 (Tesla), if it didn't stop, would be at fault for not maintaining stopping distance, hitting Car #2.

gohrt··on What was it like working on the original iPhone project?
LOC is a worse measure than "% of the product", where the product has a global impact?
gohrt··on It’s a-me: How Super Mario became a global cultural icon
Don't forget Mario Kart, another long series of genre-defining games featuring the same characters.
gohrt··on It’s a-me: How Super Mario became a global cultural icon
That show was fun, and for any of its faults, the SMB movie erased them in a transdimensional crater of awful
gohrt··on Some Google Pixel devices shutting down at 30% battery
Sure, but hardware reboot can be a button in the paperclip slot, not the main power button.
gohrt··on Maya – Python Datetimes for Humans
MayaTime would be a responsible name for this project. Brand Name + Hint about is functionality.

Like "JodaTime" and "Golang"

gohrt··on Poor worker conditions power gig economy
I simple wage test -- does the worker net more than some low wage per hour, after a reasonable estimate of expenses -- would go far. The point of the employee/contractor distinction is give the right person responsibility for the complexities of the work. Someone who earns less than a "living wage" isn't a responsible business owner.
