gogopuppygogo··on The businessmen broke Hollywood
Bingo. Except TikTok, Insta, and YouTube are all the intermediary still. They let you build a following but a creative still needs to find a way to own direct communication with their audience.

Let us not forget that in our current trajectory, Robots and Real Estate are going to be owned by one class of people who extract value from society while everyone else struggles to feed themselves.

Don’t rely on any of the big platforms long term.

gogopuppygogo··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Reddit initially monetized using Adzerk. Apollo should do exactly what you are pitching and just use the same engine to sell ads.
gogopuppygogo··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
I honestly prefer to use Apple payments and Apple "Hide My Email" as I'm sure a non-trivial number of users do. If they could just refocus on making developers prioritize that flow for users over outside payment systems (e.g. create a flow requiring users to agree to disclose their private information to the app maker and third parties in order to use an outside payment system) then they'd keep most of their customers in the Apple ecosystem and keep the payment processing.

The fact they are trying to keep a stranglehold on this revenue seems penny wise and dollar foolish. Clearly regulators are gunning for them and it's not long before they lose this and don't get to set the standard.

gogopuppygogo··on Stablecoins: Growth potential and impact on banking
I am not. When I speak with those in defi they hardly even understand the most basic aspects of this technology. My personal hope is that quantum computing develops fast enough to decimate the decentralized financial industry powered by blockchain.
gogopuppygogo··on Ask HN: Burned Out. What Now?
This will be a USA centric response because while other countries have very different options I assume that like me you are in the states.

I'd start by seeing a therapist.

It's nice to have someone to speak with about your issues that can help provide guidance.

I spent better part of a decade working every day I was awake. Started seeing a therapist after working with some truly horrible people who now face serious repercussions for their actions.

Recently, I splurged on some retro game stuff. I spent years ignoring retro gaming. I thought these were relics for immature man children who lived in their parents basement. My wife also hates the look so I had spent years not only turning a blind eye toward them but also putting what I did own since childhood into storage for when we started a family. Once I went down the rabbit hole of some retro games I don't think I'll be looking back. I found that not only are they fun to play but I have a passion for restoring them. I started by re-learning how to repair integrated circuits (I hadn't used a soldering iron in 20 years before this). Now I plan to save as many as I can.

All I'm saying, start by talking to someone who will listen and you can feel comfortable talking with. A therapist was good for me because you pay them to be your confidant. Mental health is like any other part of your body you care for.

I would however absolutely not let any co-workers or representatives of your employer know what you are going through. There is a terrible stigma around mental health and it will be perceived as a disability/weakness by some in a manner that could impact your livelihood.

gogopuppygogo··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Losing market share on the desktop is by design to shrug off regulators while they flex into new growing markets. Their cloud has been a boon to their bottom line extending their reach into government/corporate clients while Xbox has kept Sony from dominating the living room/home.

Diversification is good for any large entity not just an investment firm.

The Federal Reserve is working on FedNow to replace FedWire. It will deliver a replacement for Visa/Mastercard in many ways.
gogopuppygogo··on Why Apple’s iMessage is winning: teens dread the green text bubble
DeadAIM by JimADI was the epitome of chat for me... There was AIM+ as well...

It seems like yesterday we NEEDED to hack a chat client to remove ads to make it usable... Kind of how we use adblocking on web browsers to make the web usable...

gogopuppygogo··on Imap-backup: Backup Gmail or other IMAP accounts to disk
Cloud email providers like Google and Microsoft offer replication but not backups. It's always good practice to have a backup.
gogopuppygogo··on PortableApps.com Hits 1 Billion App Downloads
Wonderful to see these guys still making headlines on here. Their packaged versions of software have come in handy a ton for me.
gogopuppygogo··on The Dreamcast Legacy
Lack of a DVD drive killed the Dreamcast. People saw much more value in a PS2.

I had a Dreamcast at launch and still love the games that came out on it. If it had a new revision with a DVD player in it announced at the same PS2 price point to compete with the PS2 and XBOX then Sega might still be in the console business.

An alert is not a cap. They should add a cap to just shut down/delete resources if the cap is hit.
gogopuppygogo··on Japan to implement bank-deposit-backed digital currency in 2022
Gives government more ability to track flow of capital. Hugely awful move for the world to give government more control.
gogopuppygogo··on Boards are dangerous to founder/CEOs
If you give up control.

Weighted shares let a minority shareholder have more than controlling vote in a company.

It is always important to understand the fabric of your company by reading, understanding, and following the terms of your Operating Agreement or Corporate ByLaws.

Manager Managed LLC vs Member Managed LLC vs C or S Corporation are most common entity types. Use the right structure to best protect your interests.

gogopuppygogo··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
You used to be able to buy a decent used car for $5k but as of recent you can't find any without connections. I've been telling folks interested in Japanese cars that it's $10k at this time to buy used with low mileage for a sedan and $15k to buy used with low mileage for an SUV.
gogopuppygogo··on Fuck.com (1997)
I'm a bit too young to remember the advent of the Internet but old enough to remember when the FXP scene burst onto BBS's with enough warez to fill every hard drive I could get my hands on.

gogopuppygogo··on Binance just transferred 6B Tethers to an unknown address
Amazon lost money transparently as part of their bid to grow. Tether (like Enron) is concealing the true nature of their losses.

There are also parallels found in other frauds like Bernie Madoffs Ponzi Scheme to the tether fraud.

Recently bought a Switch dock new on Amazon. What showed up was in a manilla envelope bubbled wrapped. The power adapter was hilariously fake to my eye but plenty of consumers wouldn’t notice. Here are images of a genuine Nintendo a/c adapter vs the counterfeit version:

gogopuppygogo··on Adam Smith and Inequality (2014)
It’s building the economy for communist slave labor nations that seek to grow their military worldwide.

Sounds wonderful if you like communism.

To me, as someone who doesn’t, that sounds bad.

Therefore we should be trying to end the trade deficit ASAP.

The USA has been losing all war games where it defends Tawain against China.

https://nypost.com/2021/03/11/us-war-games-over-china-threat...

It is not okay to assume USA supremacy against adversaries anymore.

Why Americans still do business with China is astounding to me.

gogopuppygogo··on Back Orifice (1998)
My first year at university I took over the student radio program and found such a computer had been left online for months directly connected to the internet. It was so pwned the mouse would struggle to move.

I wish to this day I’d imaged the hard drive before formatting it. It’d have been so much fun to boot up in a VM to play with today.

gogopuppygogo··on Multi-Chip Intel Core I9-11900K Overclocking Review: Four Boards, Cryo Cooling
I for one hated gambling on overclocks that could brick my expensive hardware. I’m glad the equipment being sold today comes at max performance out of the box and that the reputable company making it will support it.
